Demography of owned dogs across an East African continuum of high-low human density.

Understanding the demographics of domestic dogs is essential for effective disease control strategies, particularly in areas where dogs serve as reservoirs of diseases, such as rabies. In this study, conducted in a region proximate to Nairobi, Kenya, we aimed to address the lack of current data on dog demographics. This area spans a high-to-low human density continuum, providing a unique setting for examining the relationship between human and dog populations. We used a household (HH) survey approach, stratifying the area by human population density and selecting sub-locations for every 10th p

Human genetic structure in Northwest France provides new insights into West European historical demography.

The demographical history of France remains largely understudied despite its central role toward understanding modern population structure across Western Europe. Here, by exploring publicly available Europe-wide genotype datasets together with the genomes of 3234 present-day and six newly sequenced medieval individuals from Northern France, we found extensive fine-scale population structure across Brittany and the downstream Loire basin and increased population differentiation between the northern and southern sides of the river Loire, associated with higher proportions of steppe vs. Neolithic

Spatiotemporal epidemiology, environmental correlates, and demography of malaria in Tak Province, Thailand (2012-2015).

BACKGROUND: Tak Province, at the Thai-Myanmar border, is one of three high malaria incidence areas in Thailand. This study aimed to describe and identify possible factors driving the spatiotemporal trends of disease incidence from 2012 to 2015. METHODS: Climate variables and forest cover were correlated with malaria incidence using Pearson's r. Statistically significant clusters of high (hot spots) and low (cold spots) annual parasite incidence per 1000 population (API) were identified using Getis-Ord Gi* statistic. RESULTS: The total number of confirmed cases declined by 76% from 2012 to 20

Evaluating how demography and temperature increase might alter the burden of congenital Toxoplasmosis in Africa.

The impact of climate change on environmental pathogens is a question whose importance will amplify in coming years. The protozoan parasite and global zoonosis Toxoplasma gondii is one such: empirical evidence indicates that oocyst survival is reduced at high temperatures. Paradoxically, a decline in incidence of T. gondii infections could amplify the burden of this disease, as the most damaging outcome occurs subsequent to first infection during pregnancy, and reductions in the incidence of the infection will increase the average age of first infection. We blend models of infection dynamics r

Demography and Behaviour of Teinopodagrion oscillans (Odonata: Megapodagrionidae) in a Protected Area of the Colombian Andean Region.

The demography and behaviour of Teinopodagrion oscillans was studied in a protected area in the Andean region of Colombia. Adult damselflies were individually marked, and using their recapture histories, we estimated survival, longevity, sex ratio, and population size using Cormack-Jolly-Seber models. Other aspects of their behaviour were recorded. Survival, recapture, and lifespan (14.1 ± 0.59 days) were similar for both sexes and all age groups. Mature males were larger, and the distance from the water was similar for all individuals. The most supported model was the time-dependent model for

The impact of sub-national heterogeneities in demography and epidemiology on the introduction of rubella vaccination programs in Nigeria.

Rubella infection during pregnancy can result in miscarriage or infants with a constellation of birth defects known as congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). When coverage is inadequate, rubella vaccination can increase CRS cases by increasing the average age of infection. Thus, the World Health Organisation recommends that countries introducing rubella vaccine be able to vaccinate at least 80% of each birth cohort. Previous studies have focused on national-level analyses and have overlooked sub-national variation in introduction risk. We characterised the sub-national heterogeneity in rubella tra

Evaluation of Dynamics, Demography and Estimation of Free-Roaming Dog Population in Herat City, Afghanistan.

FRDs pose a serious challenge in countries where dog-bite-related rabies is endemic. Understanding the size and core demographic characteristics of FRD populations is essential for the planning and implementation of effective dog-population and canine-rabies-control programmes. The photographic sight-resight method was used to estimate the FRD population and evaluate its demographic characteristics in Herat city. A total of 928 free-roaming dogs (FRD) were identified through 3172 sightings, and the total free-roaming population was estimated to amount to 1821 (95% CI: 1565-2077), which led to

Demography of vascular Behcet's disease with different gender and age: an investigation with 166 Chinese patients.

BACKGROUND: The Clinical features of vascular Behcet's disease (BD) are not well understood because there are few studies. Our study aimed to investigate characteristics of vascular BD in both genders in different age groups. RESULTS: We enrolled 923 patients with BD who presented to our hospital with adequate medical histories and proper vascular screening exams. The raw incidence rate of vascular BD was 17.98% (166/923). The ratio of vascular BD in male to female patients was 1.868 (p = 0.0004, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.317 to 2.625). There was a tendency towards higher ESR and CRP in

Pregnancy outcome in women with gestational diabetes - A longitudinal study of changes in demography and treatment modalities.

INTRODUCTION: Gestational diabetes is on the rise and demographics are changing in many countries due to increased migration. Simultaneously, the treatment of gestational diabetes in our clinic has shifted towards metformin with substantially less insulin treatment. The aim was to study the impact of these changes on metabolic control and pregnancy outcome by comparing women diagnosed with gestational diabetes during 2012-2013 and 2016-2017. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Our universal Oral Glucose Tolerance Test screening program for gestational diabetes diagnosed 199 women with singleton pregnancies

Demography, common disorders and mortality of Boxer dogs under primary veterinary care in the UK.

BACKGROUND: The Boxer is a popular dog breed with a distinctive appearance. However, the breed has been linked with several health conditions, some of which have been associated with its moderately brachycephalic conformation and its white colouration. Anonymised primary-care veterinary clinical records were explored to extract data on the demography, common disorders and mortality of Boxers in the UK in 2016. RESULTS: The study population of 336,865 dogs included 3,219 (0.96%) Boxers, of which 10.71% were recorded as white. The mean adult bodyweight was 30.43 kg (SD 5.73 kg). Annual disorder

Acquired Haemophilia A: A 15-Year Single-Centre Experience of Demography, Clinical Features and Outcome.

Acquired haemophilia A (AHA) is a rare severe bleeding disorder resulting from the production of autoantibodies directed against coagulation factor VIII. At presentation, bleeding events can be severe, and an early diagnosis and treatment are of major importance. The current study aims to analyse the treated patients who have been diagnosed with AHA for a better understanding of our population and treatment outcome. We conducted a retrospective study with 26 patients who had been diagnosed with AHA and who were treated in our hospital between January 2006 and January 2021. The patients ranged

Demography and treatment response in patients with predominant non-erosive reflux disease or functional dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Non-erosive reflux disease (NERD) and functional dyspepsia (FD) share some common features, and the appropriateness of managing these diseases independently has been questioned. A post-hoc subgroup analysis of the LEGEND study was performed to compare demographics and treatment response between patients with NERD and patients with FD. METHODS: Patients with reflux and dyspepsia symptoms who had no endoscopic evidence of mucosal breaks and/or erosions were included and divided into groups with predominant NERD (n = 1546) or FD (n = 614). Patients received lansoprazole for 4

Diversification and Demography of the Oriental Garden Lizard (Calotes versicolor) on Hainan Island and the Adjacent Mainland.

The Oriental garden lizard (Calotes versicolor) is one of the few non-gekkonid lizards that are geographically widespread in the tropics. We investigated its population dynamics on Hainan Island and the adjacent mainland of China and Vietnam, focusing on the impact of cyclic upheaval and submergence of land bridges during the Pleistocene. Our Bayesian phylogenetic analysis reveals two mitochondrial lineages, A and B, which are estimated to have coalesced about 0.26 million years ago (95% credibility interval: 0.05-0.61 million years ago). Lineage A contains individuals mainly from central and

Influence of urbanization on demography of little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus) in the prairies of North America.

BACKGROUND: We address three key gaps in research on urban wildlife ecology: insufficient attention to (1) grassland biomes, (2) individual- and population-level effects, and (3) vertebrates other than birds. We hypothesized that urbanization in the North American Prairies, by increasing habitat complexity (via the proliferation of vertical structures such as trees and buildings), thereby enhancing the availability of day-roosts, tree cover, and insects, would benefit synanthropic bats, resulting in increased fitness among urban individuals. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Over three years, w

Effects of sulfur oxides and respirable particles on human health. Methodology and demography of populations in study.

As part of a study of health effects of sulfur dioxide and particulate matter, we have established a cohort of adults 25 to 74 yr of age in 6 communities who will be followed prospectively. At the conclusion of our first cycle of measuring the health of adults in 6 sites we found that, although we used different sampling frames, our samples were close to the distribution shown in the U.S. Census for age, sex, and occupation, with the possible exception of one city. Analysis of the cross-sectional data indicated that for both age- and height-adjusted values for forced expiratory volume in 1 s a

John Graunt F.R.S. (1620-74): The founding father of human demography, epidemiology and vital statistics.

John Graunt, a largely self-educated London draper, can plausibly be regarded as the founding father of demography, epidemiology and vital statistics. In his only publication, based on a pioneering analysis of the London Bills of Mortality, he replaced guesswork with reasoned estimates of population sizes and the first accurate information on male:female ratios. He quantified the extent of immigration from countryside to city and his demonstration of the 'dying out' of a cohort paved the way for life table analysis. His comparison of London data with rural data provided the first recognition o
