Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma is a rare malignant neoplasm originating from follicular dendritic cells, and most of them develop in lymph nodes of the head and neck. One third of follicular dendritic cell sarcomas occur in the extranodal sites such as the tonsils, mesentery, and retroperitoneal organs, but those of mediastinal origin are rare. Here, we present the case of a 16-year-old female with a large follicular dendritic cell sarcoma of posterior mediastinal origin. The tumor was found by a chest X-ray mass examination at her high school, and she had no subjective symptoms or signific

A patient who worked at the World Trade Center (WTC) site presented with right cervical lymphadenopathy. He underwent right neck dissection. The final pathology showed follicular dendritic cell sarcoma. He was treated with radiation and chemotherapy and remained free of disease initially. He then presented with left cervical lymphadenopathy 2.5 years later and underwent a left neck dissection with similar pathology. A discussion of the disease process and WTC exposure is presented. Clinicians should be cognisant of this disease process and the latency between WTC exposure and the onset of sarc

The current study presents a case of extranodal follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) of the tonsil and reviews the relevant literature. In the present case, a 59-year-old male presented with a globus sensation in the right pharynx for 6 weeks. On clinical examination, a painless non-ulcerated enlarged right tonsil was identified; the tonsil was covered with a normal mucus membrane. A right tonsillectomy was performed under general anesthesia. The final pathological diagnosis was follicular dendritic cell sarcoma of the right tonsil. Postoperatively, the patient received radiotherapy. The p

A 52-year-old female smoker presenting with unexplained weight loss underwent CT and FDG PET/CT imaging, which demonstrated an extremely hypermetabolic mediastinal mass with calcification, necrosis, and features of local invasiveness. Mediastinoscopy and biopsy were followed by successful surgical resection of an encapsulated mass showing the typical histologic features of follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS). FDCS of the mediastinum is a rare neoplasm arising from accessory cells of the immune system. Integrated FDG PET/CT of mediastinal FDCS highlights the importance of histologic assess

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a low-grade malignant neoplasm that tends to be under-recognized owing to its rarity and wide pathologic spectrum. Knowledge of the atypical morphology and immunophenotype of FDCS is critical to avoid misdiagnosis. Here we presented a case of extranodal FDCS with an unusual morphology and a previously unreported immunophenotype leading to misdiagnosis. A 32-years-old man presented with a tonsilar mass that showed epithelioid cells in nested and alveolar patterns. Immunohistochemistry study revealed that the tumor cells were positive for CD4 and CD30,

Rare cases of histiocytic and dendritic cell (H/DC) neoplasms have been reported in patients with follicular lymphoma (FL), but the biologic relationship between the 2 neoplasms is unknown. We studied 8 patients with both FL and H/DC neoplasms using immunohistochemistry, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for t(14;18), and polymerase chain reaction (PCR)/sequencing of BCL2 and IGH rearrangements. There were 5 men and 3 women (median age, 59 years). All cases of FL were positive for t(14;18). The H/DC tumors included 7 histiocytic sarcomas, 5 of which showed evidence of dendritic differe

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma is a rare and aggressive tumor and its management is a major clinical challenge. Surgery is considered the mainstay of treatment and no adjuvant approach has demonstrated the ability to reduce the rate of relapses. We report on a case of a man with a 26-year clinical history of mediastinal follicular dendritic cell sarcoma, with several relapses after multiple surgical interventions. The impact of chemotherapy was very small, unlike the radiation therapy that was performed twice, with an interval time of 8 years, through an intensity-modulated technique and an

Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)-positive inflammatory follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (EBV-IFDCS) is a rare tumor of low malignant potential. Abundant lymphocytes and plasma cells often infiltrate into this tumor tissue with lymphoid follicles and sarcoid-like granulomas, so that the differential diagnosis of this tumor includes inflammatory lesions such as IgG4-related disease, morphologically. This tumor typically arises in the spleen or liver, and shows follicular dendritic cell (FDC)-like immunophenotype. Here we presented a case of EBV-IFDCS arising in intrapancreatic accessory spleen, which w

BACKGROUND: Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm arising from the follicular dendritic cells (FDC) of lymphoid follicles. FDCS can be found in nodal and extranodal sites.
PURPOSE: In this report, we present an unusual case of pleura-based FDCS with epithelioid cytology and aberrant expression of cytokeratins, including discussion of differential diagnosis.
METHODS: A comprehensive panel of immunohistochemical (IHC) stains was performed. Additionally, fluorescence in situ hybridization, allele-specific quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and next-generat

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a rare malignant tumor involving lymph nodes and extranodal sites, classified into conventional and inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT)-like variants. The IPT-like variant predominantly involves the liver and spleen. Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic immune-mediated disorder characterized by multiorgan involvement, whereas isolated esophageal and gastric involvement is exceedingly rare. Although FDCS may exhibit infiltration of IgG4-positive plasma cells, the coexistence of FDCS and IgG4-RD has not been previously reported. Herein,

RATIONALE: Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a rare malignant tumor derived from follicular dendritic cells, and is often associated with Castleman disease. Here we present a rare case of paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) with FDCS which required multidisciplinary approach for the diagnosis and treatment.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 28-year-old Chinese female had FDCS recurrence, and primary clinical manifestation was PNP.
DIAGNOSES: PNP with FDCS.
INTERVENTIONS: The patient received gamma globulin infusion, took anlotinib, and underwent plasma exchange therapy.
OUTCOMES: The skin lesions r

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a rare neoplasm that originates from dendritic cells of lymphoid follicles and shows low to intermediate malignant potential. It most commonly arises from lymph nodes, but may originate from a variety of extranodal sites. FDCS of appendix is exceptionally rare, and only a single case has been reported. Herein, we describe the clincopathological features of a case of FDCS originating from appendix with emphasis on being able to recognize this rare neoplasm in the context of the differential diagnosis of more common intraabdominal spindle cell tumors.

Here, we present the first cytological report of a primary splenic inflammatory pseudotumor-like follicular dendritic cell sarcoma. The 57 year-old male was incidentally found with a 2.2 cm well-demarcated splenic nodule. A sonography guided fine needle aspiration of the lesion was performed. The cytologic smears revealed loosely cohesive fragments of oval to spindle cells in a background of prominent lymphoplasmacytic infiltration. The cells showed sparse chromatin, distinct nucleoli, syncytial cell borders, and occasional cytoplasmic processes. On the liquid-based preparation, several histio

Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) is often a fatal autoimmune bullous disease characterized by severe stomatitis, polymorphous skin eruptions, and underlying neoplasms. We describe a patient with PNP associated with follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS), a rare neoplasm originating from follicular dendritic cells, which are non-lymphoid, non-phagocytic accessory cells of the lymphoid system and play an integral role in regulation of the germinal center reaction and present antigens to B-cells. The presence of rich vascularity around the tumor and few hyalanized vascular follicles found in hist

The case of a patient with follicular dendritic cell (FDC) sarcoma with chromosomal aberration add(21)(q11.2) is described. Cytogenetic studies showed the karyotype 46,XX,add(21)(q11.2)[3]/46,XX[17], although the encoded protein involved was not clarified. The abnormal pattern was quite simple, and different from a previous report. The clinical course of the FDC sarcoma in this case has been indolent, as for most FDC sarcoma patients. Although this patient suffered from breast carcinoma 6 years after the onset of FDC sarcoma, the carcinoma showed different histological and phenotypic profiles.
