Parathyroid adenomas and hyperplasia. Dual radionuclide scintigraphy and bone densitometry studies.

Dual radionuclide imaging of the neck (Tc-99m pertechnetate and TI-201 thallous chloride) was performed in 22 patients with chemical evidence of hyperparathyroidism (elevated blood calcium and parathormone [PTH] levels). Of these, 19 of 22 had localization of a TI-201 "excess" area on radiothallium-radiotechnetium subtraction images. In 13 patients who have had operative confirmation at this writing, the dual radionuclide imaging was positive in 12 (12/13 = 92.3%). One patient had two parathyroid adenomas, both of which were seen on the images; thus, overall detection was 13 out of 14 or 92.8%

Stratified corneal densitometry and biomechanical properties in human eyes: A Scheimpflug analysis.

This study characterized the in vivo association between stratified corneal densitometry and depth-dependent biomechanical properties by integrating data from the Pentacam Scheimpflug system and dynamic deformation parameters obtained with the corneal visualization Scheimpflug technology (Corvis ST), thereby providing novel insights into in vivo corneal biomechanics. Sixty-four myopic patients underwent corneal imaging with both devices. Corneal densitometry was divided into anterior, middle, and posterior layers using Pentacam; the overall corneal elastic modulus was determined from Corvis ST

Analysis of the correlation between biomechanical properties and corneal densitometry in myopic eyes.

Background: To investigate the correlation between corneal biomechanical characteristics (in vitro and in vivo) and corneal densitometry in myopia. Methods: The Pentacam (Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany) corneal densitometry (CD) and Corvis ST (Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany) exams were conducted prior to surgery for myopic patients who were intended to undergo small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE). CD values (grayscale units, GSUs), and in vivo biomechanical parameters were obtained. The stromal lenticule was subjected to a uniaxial tensile test to obtain the elastic modulus E in vitro. We exam the

Utility of bone densitometry in diagnostic evaluation and monitoring in regional migratory osteoporosis.

Regional migratory osteoporosis (RMO) is a rare, self-limited disease of unknown etiology, characterized by migratory arthralgia of the weight-bearing joints of the lower extremities. RMO is most commonly seen in middle-aged adults, particularly men. Several case reports suggest that bone changes seen in RMO may be detected as focal decreases in bone mineralization, but the utility of serial bone density studies has yet to be formally evaluated in this syndrome. We describe a case of RMO with dramatic focal changes in bone mineral density that corresponded to the underlying clinical course. Se

[Methods of imaging and bone densitometry in osteoporosis of patients with inflammatory rheumatoid diseases].

Besides clinical history and clinical findings conventional X-ray is important in the evaluation of osteoporosis as the third diagnostic tool. Its purpose is mainly excluding other diseases and proof of fractures as well as their follow up. Also X-ray is able to demonstrate complications of osteoporosis such as insuffiency fractures and effects of therapy as for example fluorosis. For very early diagnosis bone densitometry is used. Today the improved methods deliver fracture prediction percentages of high value. As a planar measurement method DXA of the spine and of the femoral neck can be use

Using bone densitometry to monitor therapy in treating osteoporosis: pros and cons.

Measurement of bone density is crucial for evaluating fracture risk. Low bone mass is a powerful predictor of fracture and is necessary to assess the need for treatment. Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry is accurate and precise. Use of bone density for monitoring therapy is an important tool for evaluating response to therapy, but an understanding of the limitations of the procedure are important for the practicing physician. Precision error of the technology and what change in density is clinically significant (least significant change) are important concepts to interpret results and make appr

Assessment of bone involvement in patients with multiple myeloma using bone densitometry.

To evaluate the use of dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in multiple myeloma (MM) we performed a prospective study of 34 patients with newly diagnosed MM. Most patients had advanced disease and all but two patients had osteolytic bone destructions and/or pathological fractures. Bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar spine (L1-L4) and hip were measured using a Hologic QDR-1000 scanner. Collapsed vertebrae were not excluded from analysis. Data from 289 healthy Danish volunteers aged 21-79 yr were used for calculation of Z-scores. Lumbar spine BMC (Z-score -0

Evolution of bone densitometry in patients with myeloma treated with conventional or intensive therapy.

BACKGROUND: Demineralization is a common hallmark of multiple myeloma (MM) that can be evaluated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). The evolution of lumbar and whole body bone density were investigated by DEXA in patients with MM treated by conventional or intensive therapy supported by autologous blood stem cell transplantation. METHODS: Sixty six patients younger than 66 years with MM were randomly assigned to either conventional (30 patients, Group A) or intensive therapy supported by autologous blood stem cell transplantation (36 patients, Group B). For all patients, lumbar bone

[Diagnostic value and interpretation of imaging bone densitometry based on quantitative CT].

Quantitative CT of the axial skeleton (aQCT) may serve as an example of the evaluation and interpretation of bone densitometric data as it is the only state-of-the-art technique with valid longitudinal observations. The value of bone density measurements in interindividual cross sections refers to a grading derived from a representative reference population and provides an evaluation of fracture risk. The presence and rate of any bone loss can only be evaluated in an intraindividual longitudinal follow-up. Adequate follow-up for trabecular bone requires at least 3 to 5 years intervals to discr

Quantitative estimation of salicylic acid and its metabolites by thin-layer densitometry.

A rapid thin-layer densitometric method for the quantitative determination of salicylic acid and its metabolites in urine or plasma is described. The method is specific and very sensitive. Nanogram quantities of salicylic acid and its metabolites, both free and conjugated, may be estimated. Known metabolites, as well as the newly described gentisuric acid, were estimated quantitatively in urine from a patient treated with aspirin.
