Thermodynamic and kinetic studies on antioxidant capacity of amentoflavone: a DFT (density functional theory) computational approach.

Density functional theory (DFT) at the theoretical M06-2X/6-311G(d,p) level was used to assess thermodynamics and kinetics in the antioxidative action of amentoflavone (AF). The antioxidative HAT pathway (H-atom transfer) is assigned to this compound in gas, but the SPL-ET (sequential proton loss-electron transfer) is the main route in polar solvents methanol and water. In all four mediums gas, benzene, methanol, and water, 4‴-OH is the most active site in free radical quenching with the lowest BDE (bond dissociation enthalpy) values of 81.8-84.8 kcal/mol, as well as it exerted the PA (proton

Investigating size effects in graphene-BN hybrid monolayers: a combined density functional theory-molecular dynamics study.

We combine Density Functional Theory (DFT) and classical Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations to study graphene-boron nitride (BN) hybrid monolayers spanning a wide range of sizes (from 2 nm to 100 nm). Our simulations show that the elastic properties depend on the fraction of BN contained in the monolayer, with Young's modulus values decreasing as the BN concentration increases. Furthermore, our calculations reveal that the mechanical properties are weakly anisotropic. We also analyze the evolution of the stress distribution during our MD simulations. Curiously, we find that stress does not co

Activation of dimanganese class Ib ribonucleotide reductase by hydrogen peroxide: mechanistic insights from density functional theory.

Activation of manganese-dependent class Ib ribonucleotide reductase by hydrogen peroxide was modeled using B3LYP* hybrid density functional theory. Class Ib ribonucleotide reductase R2 subunit (R2F) does not react with molecular oxygen. Instead R2F is proposed to react with H2O2 or HO2(-), provided by the unusual flavodoxin protein NrdI, to generate the observed manganese(III) manganese(III) tyrosyl-radical state. On the basis of the calculations, an energetically feasible reaction mechanism is suggested for activation by H2O2, which proceeds through two reductive half-reactions. In the first

Mechanisms of HNO and NO production from Angeli's salt: density functional and CBS-QB3 theory predictions.

The mechanism of decomposition of Angeli's salt, Na(2)N(2)O(3), was explored with B3LYP and CBS-QB3 computational methods. Angeli's salt produces both nitroxyl (HNO) and nitric oxide (NO), depending upon the pH of the solution. These calculations show that protonation on N(2), while less favorable than O protonation, leads spontaneously to HNO production, while diprotonation at O(3) leads to NO generation. K(a) values for protonation at different centers and rate constants have been found which reproduce experimental data satisfactorily.

Catalytic Ammonia Synthesis Over Metal-Free Silicon Disubstituted Cyclo[18]carbon: A Density Functional Theory Study.

In this work, we investigated silicon disubstituted cyclo[18]carbon as a metal-free catalyst for nitrogen activation and ammonia synthesis using density functional theory at the ωB97XD/def2-TZVPP level. A systematic comparison of the structural features of pristine C18, monosubstituted C17Si, and nine C16Si2 isomers (C16Si2(0)-C16Si2(8)) identifies C16Si2(8) as the most stable configuration, attributed to the maximum Si-Si separation and minimal distortion of the conjugated carbon framework. Electronic structure analysis indicates that dual Si substitution creates active sites that are highly

Thermal runaway mechanism of LiFePO4 battery electrolytes: a molecular dynamics and density functional theory simulation study.

LiFePO4 (LFP) batteries are widely used in power and energy storage applications due to their high safety, but their large-scale applications are still constrained by the thermal runaway problem, and the mechanism of electrolyte thermal stability has yet to be elucidated. To deeply understand the behavior of LFP battery electrolytes during thermal runaway, this study uses a commercial mixed-solvent electrolyte system as the research object and adopts the method of combining molecular dynamics (MD) and density functional theory (DFT) to systematically analyse ionic migration, solvation structur

Density functional theory study on the electronic structure and excited-state modulation of naphthalene diimide derivatives.

Naphthalene diimide (NDI) derivatives are widely used as n-type organic semiconductors, but quantitative structure-property relationships for this class remain incomplete. Most existing DFT studies map frontier orbital energies without providing bond-level descriptors or predictive models. Here, we combine DFT, TD-DFT, AIM, and hole-electron analysis to study 20 NDI derivatives. First, the LUMO energy follows a linear Hammett relationship with the substituent constant σp, providing a simple way to predict electron affinity. Second, AIM analysis shows that electron-withdrawing groups increase t

Density Functional Theory with Complex Absorbing Potentials: A Fast and Accurate Way of Modeling Metastable Anions.

The use of a complex absorbing potential (CAP) for the description of temporary anions is well established. However, its combination with Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) has so far been limited to the local density approximation. We report an implementation of CAP-DFT and complex-variable density functional approximations up to the generalized gradient approximation and derived hybrid functionals, which enables fast and accurate evaluation of the energies and lifetimes of metastable molecular anions. This new method is applied to various molecular systems, including the metastable an

Density functional theory investigation of oxygen-deficient SnO2-x: Optoelectronic property tuning and hydrogen gas interaction.

Oxygen-vacancy engineering is an effective strategy for tailoring the electronic, optical, and gas-sensing properties of tin dioxide (SnO2). In this work, first-principles Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were performed to systematically investigate the influence of oxygen vacancies on the optoelectronic characteristics and hydrogen adsorption behavior of pristine SnO2 and oxygen-deficient SnO2-x. Oxygen-deficient structures were considered with SnO2-x (x = 0.02, 0.06, and 0.10), corresponding to oxygen-vacancy concentrations of 1%, 3%, and 5%, respectively. A 5 × 5 × 1 rutile SnO2

Deciphering Graphene-Homocysteine Interactions via Density Functional Theory: Impact on Platelet Function through an Experimental Approach.

The biomedical usefulness of graphene materials depends on their stability in blood and how they interact with plasma biomolecules. In circulation, they can bind to fibrinogen, platelets, and lipids, key players in thrombosis, potentially influencing coagulation and thrombotic risk. Homocysteine (Hcy), a sulfur-containing amino acid associated with cardiovascular disorders, plays a crucial role in platelet activation and oxidative stress, yet its interaction with graphene derivatives remains poorly understood. Given the experimental complexity of systematically screening graphene derivatives f

Exploring the Reaction Mechanism of Methanol Steam Reforming on CuZn3O3 Cluster: A Density Functional Theory Study.

Hydrogen gas is not only an essential industrial raw material but also an important clean energy. The hydrogen production by methanol steam reforming (MSR) has attracted much attention due to its mild reaction conditions and high hydrogen yield. Herein, the MSR reactions on CuZn3O3 cluster are explored using theoretical calculations. It is found that the adjacent Cu and Zn atoms in CuZn3O3 cluster play the synergistic roles in the MSR reaction. Specifically, the reaction starts with the adsorption of H2O and CH3OH on the Zn atoms. Then, the adsorbed CH3OH and H2O dehydrogenate, and the produce

Mitigation of sulfide adsorption in natural gas by silanized stainless steel: insights from density functional theory.

This study employs Density Functional Theory (DFT) to investigate the inhibition of sulfide adsorption in natural gas through the use of silanized stainless steel. Various adsorption models were developed to explore the interactions between hydrogen sulfide, thionyl carbon, methyl mercaptan, and ethyl mercaptan with silanized stainless steel surfaces. Calculations revealed positive adsorption energies of 1.55 eV, 1.87 eV, 1.56 eV, and 1.60 eV, respectively, indicating a non-spontaneous adsorption process. Furthermore, the adsorption configurations of these sulfur compounds on the surface close

Carbon dioxide hydrogenation over the carbon-terminated niobium carbide (111) surface: a density functional theory study.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) hydrogenation is an energetic process which could be made more efficient through the use of effective catalysts, for example transition metal carbides. Here, we have employed calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) to evaluate the reaction processes of CO2 hydrogenation to methane (CH4), carbon monoxide (CO), methanol (CH3OH), formaldehyde (CH2O), and formic acid (HCOOH) over the carbon-terminated niobium carbide (111) surface. First, we have studied the adsorption geometries and energies of 25 different surface-adsorbed species, followed by calculations

Insight into pyrolysis mechanism of 1,2-propylene glycol: Based on density functional theory and wavefunction analysis.

The multiple thermal decomposition mechanisms of 1,2-propylene glycol are studied through theoretical calculation and experiment, including carbon chain break, dehydrogenation and dehydration mechanism. The wavefunction is employed to analyze the decomposition process from a micro perspective. DLPNO-CCSD(T)/CBS method is engaged in establishing potential energy surface. The results reveal that the dehydration and carbon chain break mechanism are the primary pyrolysis paths, and the former is the dominant pyrolysis mechanism at low temperature, while the latter is applicable at the high tempera

NMR and DFT investigations of structure of colchicine in various solvents including density functional theory calculations.

A detailed NMR investigation of the chemical shifts of hydrogen and carbon atoms associated with the structure of the naturally occurring alkaloid colchicine was conducted using high field NMR. Initially, the experimental chemical shifts for colchicine in chloroform and DMSO were compared to the values calculated using density functional theory (DFT). There were significant deviations observed for the chloroform solvent, but these were only slight in the DMSO solution. Dilution of the chloroform solution changed the experimental chemical shifts and improved agreement with the DFT calculations,

Evaluation of density functional theory for a large and diverse set of organic and inorganic equilibrium structures.

Density functional theory (DFT) has been extensively benchmarked for energetic properties; however, less attention has been given to equilibrium structures and the effect of using a certain DFT geometry on subsequent energetic properties. We evaluate the performance of 52 contemporary DFT methods for obtaining the structures of 122 species in the W4-11-GEOM database. This dataset includes a total of 246 unique bonds: 117 H─X, 65 X─Y, 49 X═Y, and 15 XY bonds (where X and Y are first- and second-row atoms) and 133 key bond angles: 96 X-Y-H, 22 X-Y-Z, and 15 H-X-H angles. Solvent Effects on Nonadiabatic Coupling: Interfacing Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory with the Effective Fragment Potential Method.

To enable the accurate prediction of solvent effects on nonadiabatic processes, time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) is combined with the effective fragment potential (EFP) method for the computation of nonadiabatic coupling matrix elements (NACME). The viability of the new TDDFT/EFP NACME method is demonstrated via comparisons to fully TDDFT NACME calculations for both the solute (methylene imine) and solvent (water or methanol). The success of the combined TDDFT/EFP method is promising for the use of the new method for accurate simulations of the nonadiabatic dynamics of solvated
