Ways of enhancing pulp preservation by stepwise excavation--a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: The best possible methods and materials in stepwise excavation for deep caries in permanent teeth were investigated. The review considers the questions from many aspects including clinical success, effects of reducing cariogenic bacteria, possibility of hardening softened dentin, and likelihood of generating tertiary dentin. DATA: This systematic review includes the use of data from randomized controlled trials, controlled clinical trials as well as from case series in which pulp exposure resulted following the treatment and removal of deep caries. Only studies of caries in perman

Pulp chamber access alternative in pulpectomies in a child with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome is a congenital abnormality of the heart. Patients with this syndrome and multiple dental caries with pulp exposure may require comprehensive dental treatment under general anesthesia. Pulpectomy is performed in primary teeth with pulp expose. This treatment in anterior teeth requires palatal access and the majority there is no good visibility, requiring more time to perform. Therefore, this case aimed to demonstrate a pulp chamber opening alternative in pulpectomies in a child with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-year-old fema

Experimental bacterial anachoresis in dog dental pulps capped with calcium hydroxide.

The pulps of 36 permanent dog teeth were mechanically exposed and capped with Dycal, calcium hydroxide powder mixed with saline, or Teflon. At 2, 14, and 28 days postoperatively, nine teeth treated with the materials were extracted (treated control teeth): A suspension of streptococci was then injected intravenously. Twenty-four h later the dogs were killed and both the 27 treated teeth (experimental group) and 6 unoperated control teeth were removed in tissue blocks. Tissue sections were examined for the presence of bacteria, hard tissue formation, inflammatory cell response and necrosis. Bac

Preservation in Young Patients of Pulp Vitality and Anatomical-Functional Restoration of the Lost Structure.

Often, young patients (≤30 years old) present with carious lesions that progress acutely, compromising a large amount of tooth structure. In these cases, a treatment to prevent the occurrence of pulp exposure and promote remineralization of caries-affected dentin is necessary to maintain healthy dental structure and allow more conservative interventions. The approach will be different when pulp exposure occurs: The therapeutic treatments will be focused on reparative dentin formation and prevention of microorganisms penetrating the pulp organ. Due to the different possible treatments that can

Behavioral depression induced by dental pain in mice and its resistance to analgesics.

Acute dental pain contributes to ∼10% of opioid analgesic prescriptions in the U.S., highlighting a critical need for safer, non-opioid alternatives. This study supports the NIH HEAL initiative by developing a preclinical model to investigate behavioral depression as one class of behavioral signs that are both caused by dental pain and useful for analgesic discovery. Specifically, we assessed depression of locomotor and oral activity and stimulation of postural hunching and facial grimace as pain-related behaviors produced by a set of dental-pain manipulations. We then evaluated effectiveness

Immunohistochemical and electron microscopy aspects of the nerve structures from the dental pulp.

In this study, we have done an immunohistochemical and an electron microscopy examination of normal and inflamed human dental pulp specimens in order to evaluate the morphological aspects of the nerve structures from the dental pulp. The S100 protein immunohistochemical marking allowed us to observe the trajectory of the pulp nervous structures, which appear as continuous bands of high intensity at radicular level, coronary branch out and some branches cross the odontoblastic layer and penetrate in predentin along the dentinal tubules. It appears that not only the nerve structures are positive

Histopathological condition of the remaining tissues after endodontic infection of rat immature teeth.

INTRODUCTION: Recently, case reports have shown that immature teeth diagnosed with necrotic pulp and periapical periodontitis can be repaired through a regenerative endodontic procedure. True regeneration depends on the presence of stem cells in the remaining vital tissues. The aim of this study was to evaluate the histologic condition of the pulp tissue, root apical papilla, and periapical tissues after inducing endodontic infection in immature rat teeth for different periods. METHODS: This study evaluated 18 first upper rat molars (36 roots). Periapical lesions were induced and were confirm
