[Remineralization of artificial root caries by fluoride dentifrice of different fluoride concentration in vitro].

PURPOSE: Although the effectiveness of fluoride dentifrice in remineralizing enamel caries has been established, the optimum fluoride concentration for remineralization root caries has not been defined. The aim of this study was to assess and compare the effect of 1.1g/L, 1.45g/L and 5g/L fluoride dentifrices in remineralization of artificial root caries. METHODS: Sound human tooth fragments obtained from the cervical portion of root were stored in a demineralization solution for 96h at 37 degrees centigrade to induce artificial root caries lesions. The fragments were then randomly divided in

Overnight malodor effect with a 0.454% stabilized stannous fluoride sodium hexametaphosphate dentifrice.

Stannous fluoride (SnF2) is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent effective against caries, plaque, and gingivitis. Because oral malodor has a microbial etiology, the potential immediate effects of SnF2 on malodor were evaluated in 2 independent, randomized clinical trials. Both studies used a similar double-blind, crossover design, with subjects randomized to a treatment sequence with a 0.454% stabilized SnF2 sodium hexametaphosphate dentifrice or sodium fluoride dentifrice control. Overnight malodor was assessed at baseline in the morning before brushing and 24 hours later, after morning and

The effect of a sodium lauryl sulfate-free dentifrice on patients with recurrent oral ulceration.

OBJECTIVE: Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) is the most commonly used detergent in dentifrices. Recent reports have suggested that it may exacerbate conditions with compromised epithelial integrity. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of an SLS-free dentifrice and an SLS-containing dentifrice on recurrent oral ulceration (ROU). DESIGN: A double-blind crossover clinical trial was carried out during which subjects used an SLS dentifrice for 8 weeks and an SLS-free dentifrice for 8 weeks. Each phase was preceded by a 2-week washout period. SETTING: A UK dental teaching hospital. SUBJEC

Microstructural changes of human enamel surfaces by brushing with and without dentifrice containing abrasive.

Toothbrushing with and without dentifrice containing abrasive was performed on human enamel pieces attached to resin plates exposed to the oral cavities of 3 human subjects for 8 weeks. The effects on the ground enamel surfaces with engraved scratches were examined by scanning electron and scanning laser microscopy. Brushing with such a dentifrice caused smaller scratches to disappear, large scratches to expand and new microwear to appear; in some samples, prism structures were exposed. Under brushing without dentifrice, these scratches were protected by an organic pellicle with mineral deposi

Measurement of dietary and dentifrice effects upon calculus accumulation rates in the domestic ferret.

Most animal models for the study of calculus accumulation and control currently use rodents or dogs. In an effort to overcome limitations inherent in the use of these species, we investigated calculus formation in domestic ferrets, a species used by King et al. in the 1940's and 1950's. Ferrets are much smaller than dogs, and, unlike rodents, can be scored while alive. In this study, we examined the kinetics of calculus formation in female ferrets fed with moist canned cat food--either plain or supplemented with sucrose--and two combinations of mineral salts. An additional group given suppleme

Study of a bland dentifrice for persons with radiation-induced mucositis and vesiculo-erosive disease.

Althought the patient group was limited to persons with radiation-induced mucositis, lichen planus, and erythema multiforme, the study indicates the potential usefulness of a bland dentifrice to other patients with sensitive mouths. Although it is presumed that regular brushing habits will aid in oral hygiene and health, the specific effect of a bland dentifrice on control of plaque, caries, and periodontal disease cannot be assessed in this preliminary study. Also, no comparison was made with cleaning techniques in which dentifrice is not used. Therefore, this study indicated only that dentif
