Throughout lifetime, the teeth are continuously exposed to numerous chemical and physical impacts, which cause the wear of the dental hard tissues, gingival recession and other oral changes with sometimes subsequent problems. Age-related wear of tooth surfaces reduces the dental enamel thickness and exposes deeper layers of enamel, which have different physical and chemical properties than the surface enamel. Gingival recession is the main causal factor of root caries and dentine hypersensitivity. Age-related changes in dentine include the formation of secondary dentine and the reduction in tu

Cementum regeneration on exposed dentinal root surfaces of replanted teeth not subjected to replantation. The implication was that secondary reattachment of replanted teeth was largely dependent on the status of supporting alveolar tissues. The role of the replant appeared essentially passive, reacting as a substrate for cementum deposition that may be more or less acceptable to the regenerating periodontal tissues as dictated by the extraoral history. Although the pattern of cementum deposition was unaltered by replantation, the quantity of new cementum deposited on exposed dentin did appear

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the human pulp response after adhesive restoration of cavities by indirect pulp capping with a conventional or a resin-modified glass ionomer cement.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Deep cavities prepared in 26 human premolars were lined with Riva Light Cure (Riva LC), Riva Self Cure (Riva SC), or Dycal, and then restored with composite resin. Four teeth were used as intact control. After time intervals of 7 or 30 days, the teeth were extracted, processed for histological evaluation of the pulp, and the remaining dentin thickness (RDT) between the cavity floor and the p

OBJECTIVE: A number of clinical and histological studies have investigated caries-related changes in the primary tooth pulp, but the effect of caries site, as a clinical variable, has not been previously considered. This study sought to compare inflammatory changes within the pulp of primary molars according to the location of the caries lesion (occlusal or proximal).
METHODS: Eighty-three primary molars were extracted under general anaesthesia for caries and/or orthodontic reasons, and were split immediately after removal and fixed in 10% formalin. Teeth were then decalcified, sectioned, and

Pulp exposure remains a source of great frustration to the dental practitioner, because the outcome of any pulp capping procedure is marked with uncertainty. The clinician is often unaware of the coexistence of possible pulp pathology at the time of damage to the pulpal wall. Until a more accurate clinically and histologic diagnosis can be made, pulp capping as a clinical treatment, can only be rendered on an empirical basis.

Damage in the bonding interface is a significant factor that leads to premature failure of dental bonded restorations. The imperfectly bonded dentin-adhesive interface is susceptible to hydrolytic degradation and bacterial and enzyme attack, severely jeopardizing restorations' longevity. Developing caries around previously made restorations, also called "recurrent or secondary caries," is a significant health problem. The replacement of restorations is the most prevailing treatment in dental clinics, leading to the so-called "tooth death spiral". In other words, every time a restoration is rep

The muscle segment homeogenes Msx1 and Msx2 play a major role in tooth and bone formation. Periodontal osteoclast impairment also occurs in Msx2 null mutant mice, which is restored by overexpression of the receptor activator of NF-κB targeted in osteoclast lineage. Here, we investigated the role of Msx2 in dentinogenesis. Experiments were performed on Msx2(-/-) mice and the MDPC-23 odontoblastic cell line. After Msx2 gene silencing, real-time quantitative RT-PCR data showed significant overexpression of Runx2, Bglap, Dspp, and Alpl. Of three inhibitors of Wnt/β-catenin signaling (Dkk1, SostDc1

Class V cavities were prepared at the amelo-cementum junction in sixty-eight extracted human teeth. Fifty-one were filled with glass ionomer cement (ASPA). 'Secondary carious' lesions were produced around thirty-five of the restorations by exposure to acidified gelatin. Thirty-three teeth served as controls of the effect of the preparation procedure, the conditioner, the ASPA liquid and the filling material proper on the cavity walls. Sixty 120 micrometers-thick longitudinal sections from the teeth with the restorations in situ were studied by polarized light microscopy and microradiography. T

AIM: To evaluate the survival rate and clinical status of a glass ionomer (GI) sealant in hypomineralised permanent first molars (PFMs), as well as to assess the occurrence of post-eruptive breakdown (PEB) and measure dentin hypersensitivity in the sealed molars over a 12-month follow-up period.
METHODS: Fifty-two hypomineralised PFMs, with at least two-thirds of their crown erupted, exhibiting opacities on the occlusal surface, no caries or PEB, were sealed using a GI sealant (GC Fuji Triage®). Clinical evaluation was performed using the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria.

Both the hard substances and the soft tissues of the teeth and their attachment apparatus are subject to constant change. This begins immediately after eruption and continues throughout life. An exact dividing line between changes which are physiological and pathological cannot always be drawn. Enamel undergoes attrition, and in addition its mechanical characteristics alter, owing probably to changes in diffusion conditions. The age-induced changes occurring in dentine are much more obvious, the biological properties of this hard substance being fundamentally altered. The dentine of older peop

OBJECTIVE: To prepare a bioactive dentin adhesive and investigate its effect on promoting bonding durability of dentin.
METHODS: The mineralization of the bioactive glass with high phosphorus (10.8 mol% P2O5-54.2 mol% SiO2-35 mol% CaO, named PSC) and its ability to induce type I collagen mineralization were observed by SEM and TEM. The Control-Bond and the bioactive dentin adhesive containing 20 wt% PSC particles (PSC-Bond) were prepared, and their degree of conversion (DC), microtensile bond strength (μTBS), film thickness and mineralization performance were evaluated. To evaluate the bondin

An inflammatory response occurs in the pulp tissue following the application of dental materials due to their chemical properties and/or a secondary bacterial irritation. Recently, a new line of composite resin products with reported improved esthetic qualities was designed to allow an intimate adherence with the dentin. This intense bonding could prevent bacterial penetration and marginal discoloration of these restorations. In addition, this method allows prevention of excessive removal of hard tissue. The present study examines pulpal reaction to capping with P-10 composite resin (Dental Pr

The purpose of this study was to evaluate tricalcium phosphate (TCP) as a pulp-capping agent. Two adult male beagle dogs were used for this investigation. Class I cavities were prepared in the posterior teeth and Class V cavities in the anterior teeth. With the use of a rubber dam and high speed with water coolant, minimal pulp exposures were created in both the experimental and control teeth, by means of a 1/2 round bur. Zinc oxide-eugenol was the temporary filling material used to restore all cavities. In each dog, five teeth served as control and were capped with the use of calcium hydroxid

Early loss of immature permanent teeth due to pulpal necrosis secondary to trauma can have dire consequences for a child's growth and development. The treatment alternatives include surgical endodontics, traditional calcium hydroxide apexification, and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) apexification. These options pose potential complications, including: arrest of root development; weakened dentinal walls; and increased potential for fracture. Revascularization of the dentin-pulp complex is a new approach that involves disinfecting the root canal system followed by tissue repair and regeneratio

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a group of more than 25 secreted and membrane bound enzymes that represent class of enzymes responsible for degradation of pericellular substrates. They have been isolated from dentine, odontoblasts, pulp and periapical tissue. They play an important role in dentine matrix formation, modulating caries progression and secondary dentine formation. Earlier microbial proteolytic enzymes were believed to be responsible for degradation of dentine organic matrix, but lately the accumulated body of evidence suggests that MMPs have an important role in the process.

This article describes the diagnosis and treatment of a case of extensive apical external root resorption in the presence of a large periradicular lesion. The diagnosis was made in retrospect because the result of the resorption mimicked an immature root. The treatment consisted of the use of calcium hydroxide to induce apexification. Healing was obtained after 24 months.
