BACKGROUND: Dental trauma, restorative operative procedures and/or caries lesions can expose the dental pulp. Facing this clinical condition, where the maintenance of the dentin-pulp complex vitality is imperative, is challenging in Dentistry. Dental pulp stem cells conditioned medium contains trophic factors that could help in this task. This in vivo pilot study aimed to evaluate the effects of the human dental pulp stem cells conditioned medium on the dental pulp tissue response to vital pulp therapy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Concentrated conditioned medium was obtained by incubating character

The term hypomineralisation of molars and incisors (MIH), introduced in 2001 by Weerheijm et al., describes a clinical state of hypomineralisation of permanent molars with frequent involvement of the incisors. MIH is considered a global dental problem with a prevalence ranging from 2.4% to 40.2% in the entire world paediatric population. The continuous increase in the prevalence of enamel anomalies, including MIH, indicates the need to define new intervention protocols based on the technological advances that are revolutionising paediatric dentistry. The use of ozone associated with the select

Oketz is a military special unit that operates different dog species for various missions. The dogs get routine medical and dental treatments in order to maintain their health and function. The dental treatment is based on the principles of contemporary dentistry for small animals. Furthermore, these working dogs need special care due to higher risk to trauma and attrition. The dogs go through routine dental examination and prophylactic dental cleaning. Each dental procedure is performed under general anesthesia; therefore it is well planned ahead including all the pre-operative workup needed.

The transition from pre-clinical to clinical operative dentistry requires effective training tools; however traditional typodont teeth often fall short in simulating clinical scenarios such as caries preparation. This study evaluated the perspectives of 71 third-year dental students from the classes of 2024 and 2025 at Harvard School of Dental Medicine on the use of 3D-printed caries teeth as a preparatory tool. Students participated in case-based collaborative learning and operative exercises using these models, with pre- and post-surveys capturing feedback on realism, usability, and educatio

Subcutaneous emphysema is an uncommon phenomenon in dentistry, usually occurring with the use of air-driven, high-speed handpieces during dental and oral surgery, operative, endodontic, or periodontal treatment. Air is forced into a surgical wound or subepithelial laceration in the oral cavity, dissecting through the different layers of tissue fasciae, and usually creating a unilateral enlargement of the facial and/or submandibular regions. This occurs with or without crepitus, pain, and airway obstruction. Treatment usually consists of antibiotic and mild analgesic therapy, close observation,

Esthetic considerations are playing a greater role in the treatment planning of dental care, especially in the restoration of anterior teeth. Much attention has been paid to both operative and prosthodontic techniques that are available in esthetic restorative dentistry. Less attention has been given to soft tissue esthetics, the shape of the face and position of the lips, and the contours, color, and overall appearance of the gingiva and associated soft tissues. This article reviews a basic approach to soft tissue esthetics, the appearance of the gingiva, the interrelationship of the gingiva,

BACKGROUND: Acquiring competency in restorative dentistry (RD) and fixed prosthodontics (FP) is challenging for undergraduate dental students due to the presence of threshold concepts and tacit knowledge. The aim of this study was to identify the threshold concepts (knowledge barriers) and tacit knowledge (skill development barriers) necessary for achieving competencies in RD and FP using quantitative and qualitative approaches. The strategies for attaining these competencies were also proposed.
METHODS: The present study adopted a critical-theorist mixed-method study design, using quantitati

Treatment of a severe tethering of the mandible by surgery and subsequent exercise of the jaw with a newly devised mouth gag, consisting of two blocks of acrylic resin with a screw expander between them, is described. The mandible was gradually forced to open and was retained in the opened position by rotating the screw against the resistance of scar contraction without much pain. Possible development of trismus after excision of a tumor in the lower retromolar area because of surgical injury to the medial pterygoid muscle and postoperative scarring was avoided by means of the appliance.

In order to understand the impacts of extreme heat on oral health and dentistry this study has been undertaken. In the era of global warming and climate change extreme heat events (EHEs) are increasing across the world. The rising frequency, intensity, and duration of EHEs over India poses new hurdles for oral health and dentistry. In this review, the impacts of extreme heat (EH) on oral health and dentistry in India have been highlighted. Heat-induced dehydration leads to reduced salivary flow, which increases the risk of dental caries, periodontal disease, oral mucosal lesions, and infection

Oral health is - literally - vital to good general health, not least because the mouth is the sentinel of the body. Dentistry, the Cinderella of health care, faces immense challenges of globalisation. Governments, having spent freely on everything from defence to social security, face mountains of debts which make budget cutbacks essential. Simultaneously, most developed countries have to pay increasing costs of caring for rapidly ageing populations. Dentistry is being pulled two ways: wealthy members of society demand high-end expensive treatment, much of it cosmetic rather than necessary to

Periodontal instrument fractures are rare events in dentistry, with limited literature available on their occurrence and management. This case report highlights an incident involving the fracture of a periodontal sickle scaler blade during manual instrumentation for the removal of calculus. The fracture occurred during instrumentation on the mesial surface of the maxillary right second molar, and the separated blade was subsequently pushed into the sulcus. A radiographic assessment was performed to verify the precise location of the fractured segment. Following confirmation, the broken blade w

OBJECTIVE: SARS-CoV-2 is a new Coronavirus identified as the cause of Coronavirus disease in 2019 (COVID-19). The epidemic spread in China and beyond its borders, involving 114 countries with more than 5 million dead. On March 11, the WHO declared the spread of SARS-CoV-2 to be a pandemic and encouraged nations to adopt harsh restrictive measures. Therefore, patients more and more often turn to dental offices only for emergencies. Healthcare professionals, including dentists, are at high infectious risk. In fact, the closeness to the oral cavity and nasopharynx and the use of drills or ultraso

INTRODUCTION: While the dental management of patients with haemophilia has changed considerably in the last decade, haemophiliacs in Western Australia have continued to receive pre-operative factor support for dentistry regardless of the type of dental procedure.
AIM: To review the efficacy and safety of established dental protocols that reduce factor use in the dental management of patients with haemophilia and to estimate cost savings.
METHODS: Records of 11 patients with haemophilia that were seen in the pilot programme period were reviewed. These were cross-referenced with previous denta

Restoration of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) represents a major challenge for resin materials due to the different adhesive properties of the tooth structure, the biomechanical aspects of the cervical area, and the difficulties in the access and isolation of the operative field. Furthermore, NCCLs should be approached with a complete understanding of the role played by the marginal periodontal tissue. Whenever a cervical lesion is associated with a gingival recession, the interplay between restorative dentistry and periodontology is decisive for full esthetic and long-term success. A ca

In 2003, the Minnesota Dental Practice Act was modified to allow dental hygienists and assistants to place amalgam, composite, glass ionomer, and stainless steel crowns. A restorative functions course was added to the curriculum of a dental hygiene program at a state university in Minnesota to teach these skills. Student requirements for the course included clinical experiences on a minimum of twelve patients, as outlined by the Minnesota Board of Dentistry. The objectives of this study were to describe the characteristics and satisfaction levels of patients receiving care in the restorative f

Gamma/delta T cells may act as a first line of defence and respond to stress signals from the surrounding tissue. In the present investigation the occurrence of gamma/delta T cells was studied in the human skin after application of heavy metal salts by a routine epicutaneous patch-testing procedure. Gamma/delta cells were not found in normal skin. They were observed in all 14 allergic or irritant patch-test reactions to gold chloride and in 6/8 such reactions to mercuric chloride, where they comprised 16 +/- 6% and 15 +/- 6%, respectively, of the CD3+ cells in the dermis. They were also epider
