Gaze patterns of dentists while evaluating bitewing radiographs.

OBJECTIVES: Understanding dentists' gaze patterns on radiographs may allow to unravel sources of their limited accuracy and develop strategies to mitigate them. We conducted an eye tracking experiment to characterize dentists' scanpaths and thus their gaze patterns when assessing bitewing radiographs to detect primary proximal carious lesions. METHODS: 22 dentists assessed a median of nine bitewing images each, resulting in 170 datasets after excluding data with poor quality of gaze recording. Fixation was defined as an area of attentional focus related to visual stimuli. We calculated time t

Dental professionals often perform physically and mentally demanding therapeutical procedures. They work maintaining muscular imbalance and asymmetrical positions for a long time. The aim of the study was to describe the prevalence and the factors associated to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) among Italian dental professionals and the most affected body regions. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted between March 2019 and February 2020. The Nordic Musculoskeletal questionnaire (NMQ) was implemented with questions related to working habits (dental occupation, working

Knowledge of halitosis among dentists and dental hygienists.

Bad breath is a widespread condition that has been increasingly discussed among professionals and in the mass media in the last few years. In nine of ten cases, halitosis originates intraorally; hence it has become an important topic of study in the education and training of dentists and dental hygienists. However, the de facto knowledge of professionals has never been examined until today. 750 dentists and dental hygienists from Switzerland, Germany, and France were personally interviewed. Their knowledge of halitosis was assessed using a specifically designed questionnaire. In general, consi

Dentists' knowledge about anaphylaxis caused by local anaesthetics.

BACKGROUND: IgE-mediated systemic reactions to local anaesthetics may be seen--although rarely--by dentists. However, it is not known whether dentists are familiar with symptoms, signs and management of anaphylaxis. METHODS: In this study we aimed to evaluate knowledge of dentists of the symptoms and signs and current treatment of anaphylaxis. For this, some dentists working in their private offices in Istanbul were asked to complete an anonymous questionnaire with 15 questions related to anaphylaxis. RESULTS: A total of 86 dentists agreed to participate in the study. None of the attendants

Working conditions and dentists' attitude towards proprioceptive derivation.

Proprioceptive derivation (Pd), a new method of organising a dentist workstation as well as a working procedure, was introduced to Thailand. The aim of this study was to assess the working conditions and the attitude to Pd among experienced users. Questionnaires were distributed among 12 dentists. The results showed that all dentists chose to work in a sitting posture and mostly worked without breaks between patients. They spent less time on dental examination and crown and bridge therapy tasks. Solving problems in patients with physical limitations resulted in a low stress level. Seven dentis

Self-reported occupational dermatological reactions among Danish dentists.

The aims of the study were to investigate the causes and prevalences of occupational dermatological reactions among Danish dentists. Questionnaires and telephone interviews with Danish dentists revealed that 37.8% reported skin reactions. In 27.2% of the cases the reactions were related to occupation, occurring with a point prevalence of 9.6%, and with a 1-yr period prevalence of 21.4%. The main causes were hand washing/soaps, latex gloves and (di)methacrylate-containing materials occurring at point prevalences of 7.1%, 1.3% and 1.7%, respectively. In addition, several other causes were report

Hereditary hypophosphatemia rickets: an important awareness for dentists.

Because X-linked hypophosphatemia VDRR is reported to be the most common form of rickets in the United States today, it is important for dentists to be aware of this condition. Characteristic dental findings are often the first clinically noticeable signs of the disease. The confirmation of hypophosphatemia with dental findings will permit early diagnosis and prevent crippling rachitic deformities, otherwise certain to follow. Reports in the literature confirm the validity of conservative, prophylactic full coverage restorations in patients with VDRR.

The role of dentists in promoting human papillomavirus vaccination for oropharyngeal cancer prevention: A cross-sectional survey of dentists in North Carolina.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes cancers of the oropharynx, and HPV vaccination prevents these cancers. Given the prominent role of HPV vaccines in promoting oral health, this study aimed to understand the knowledge, perceptions, and perceived barriers associated with HPV and HPV vaccination among dentists in North Carolina, a state that does not currently permit vaccine administration by dentists. METHODS: A cross-sectional study using a questionnaire was electronically distributed to North Carolina dentists. Eligibility criteria included reporting an active dental license and p

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four healthy volunteers were examined before and after exposure in dental workshop. They spent 76.8 ± 0.7 min in the testing room during grinding of dental nanocomposites. The individual exposure to aerosol particles in each participant´s breathing zones was monitored using a personal nanoparticle sampler (PENS).
