Enamel hypoplasia in ancestral Puebloan populations from southwestern Colorado: I. Permanent Dentition.

Dental enamel hypoplasias are used to examine metabolic disruption experienced during early childhood by ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi) inhabitants of southwestern Colorado. The hypoplasia sample consists of the permanent anterior dentition from 147 individuals from Montezuma County and Mesa Verde National Park. Using the individual as the basis of analysis, the study compares different time periods of occupation of the region with respect to prevalence and timing of hypoplasia occurrence. The frequency of enamel hypoplasia in the combined regional sample is high, affecting 90% of the individual

Supragingival Microbial Profiles of Permanent and Deciduous Teeth in Children with Mixed Dentition.

OBJECTIVES: The present study was designed to investigate the microbial profiles of teeth in different locations in mixed-dentition-stage children, and to compare the microbiomes of permanent and deciduous teeth in the same healthy oral cavity. METHODS: Supragingival plaque samples of teeth in various locations-the first permanent molars, deciduous molars, deciduous canines and incisors and permanent incisors-were collected from 20 healthy mixed-dentition-stage children with 10-12 permanent teeth erupted. Plaque DNA was extracted, and the V3-V4 hypervariable region of the bacterial 16S rRNA g

Abnormal primary and permanent dentitions with ectodermal symptoms predict WNT10A deficiency.

BACKGROUND: The WNT10A protein is critical for the development of ectodermal appendages. Variants in the WNT10A gene may be associated with a spectrum of ectodermal abnormalities including extensive tooth agenesis. METHODS: In seven patients with severe tooth agenesis we identified anomalies in primary dentition and additional ectodermal symptoms, and assessed WNT10A mutations by genetic analysis. RESULTS: Investigation of primary dentition revealed peg-shaped crowns of primary mandibular incisors and three individuals had agenesis of at least two primary teeth. The permanent dentition was s

Clinic and radiographical evaluation of non-syndromic hypodontia and hyperdontia in permanent dentition.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographical characteristics of non-syndromic hypodontia and hyperdontia in the permanent dentition. STUDY DESIGN: This study included 139 patients. Clinical and radiographical examinations were carried out by two examiners. Number and localization of missing or supernumerary teeth, and pathologies associated with the teeth, were recorded. Other teeth in the mouth were also examined for the presence of additional dental anomalies. RESULTS: A total of 256 congenitally missing teeth were observed in 102 patients, and 73 s

Dental variables associated with differences in severity of fluorosis within the permanent dentition.

The aim of this study was to assess the influence of age at start, duration, and completion of enamel formation, as well as of tooth-eruption age and enamel thickness on the severity of dental fluorosis within the permanent dentition. The material comprised Ugandan children (n = 219), aged 10-14 years, with 28 teeth and at least 1 tooth with fluorosis. The children were permanent residents in districts with either 0.5 mg or 2.5 mg fluoride/l in the drinking water. Fluorosis was assessed on the vestibular surfaces of all teeth using the modified Thylstrup and Fejerskov (TF) index. In order to r

Changes in the molar relationship between the deciduous and permanent dentitions: a longitudinal study.

The purpose of this study was to describe the changes in the molar relationship from the deciduous dentition to the permanent dentition in 121 subjects from the Iowa Longitudinal Growth Study. In addition, an attempt was made to determine the association between the various dentofacial variables and the changes in the molar relationship in 55 persons (33 male and 22 female subjects) with normal occlusion. All subjects were evaluated at three stages of dental development: stage I, completion of the deciduous dentition (means age = 4.94 years); stage II, when permanent first molars initially eru

Effect of dummy-sucking on the prevalence of posterior cross-bite in the permanent dentition.

In 1971 a comprehensive health inspection of all 4-year-olds in the County of Skaraborg was carried out. This also included a dental examination, in which the prevalence of cross-bite was related to the child's sucking habit. The aim of the present study was to investigate the development of the transverse relation between the arches in these 4-year-olds up to the age of 16. Among the 4-year-old dummy-suckers, the prevalence of cross-bite was five times as high than among children with no previous sucking-habit. In spite of this fact, it has not been possible in this study to establish a signi

[Biostatistical proof of retarded tooth eruption in the permanent dentition of patients with clefts].

It is evidenced biostatistically that the eruption of the permanent teeth is retarded in cleft patients. This retardation concerns both the maxillary and mandibular teeth. Both sexes are involved. In female cleft patients the change to the permanent dentition occurs earlier than in male cleft patients. There is no sidedness.

Relationship between Posterior Permanent Dentition Pattern and Radiographic Changes of the Mandibular Condyle.

This study assessed the relationship between posterior permanent dentition and radiographic changes of the mandibular condyle. This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted on 300 panoramic radiographs of patients over 40 years of age (188 females and 112 males). Panoramic radiographs were evaluated for condylar changes such as flattening, subcortical sclerosis, subcortical cyst, erosion, osteophytes, and generalized sclerosis. Presence of muscle pain and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain and sounds, and history of TMJ trauma were also assessed. The occlusal scheme of posterior teeth

Two patients with Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome without periodontal involvement of the permanent dentition.

Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) is a rare autosomal recessive genodermatosis characterized by palmoplantar keratoderma and severe periodontitis leading to premature loss of primary and permanent teeth. PLS is caused by loss-of-function mutations in CTSC, lacking functional cathepsin C, which impairs the activation of neutrophil serine proteases. Precise pathogenesis of periodontal damage is unknown. Patient 1 presented with well-demarcated, transgredient, diffuse, palmoplantar keratoderma and psoriasiform lesions from the age of 2 years. Based on severe and recurrent periodontal inflammation,

Distalization of Maxillary First Permanent Molar by Pendulum Appliance in Mixed Dentition Period.

INTRODUCTION: Mesial drifting of molar teeth in maxillary arch is corrected by movement of the molars distally. In addition to traditional distal movement techniques, such as extraoral force application and removable appliances, various intra-arch devices have been introduced since 1980s. These intra-arch appliances have nearly eliminated the need for patient cooperation. CASE REPORT: The purpose of this paper is to report a case of 10-year-old male patient with loss of space in maxillary molar teeth treated by intra-arch appliance-pendulum appliance by distalization of maxillary first perman

Age Related Prevalence of Pre-Eruptive Intracoronal Radiolucent Defects in the Permanent Dentition.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to determine if the prevalence of pre-eruptive intracoronal radiolucent defects is higher for young age groups, in which there are more unerupted teeth. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study of panoramic and bitewing radiographs was conducted. An inclusion criterion was the presence of un-erupted permanent teeth with a formed and clearly visible crown. Age groups were: young (6-8 years), intermediate (9-12 years) and adults (13-53 years). Significance level was set at p≤0.05. RESULTS: Thirteen (3.9%) pre-eruptive lesions were detected in 335 records. No lesio
