Swallowed or aspirated dentures may result in serious systemic complications and require multidisciplinary attention or intervention. With an increasing number of edentulous elderly patients, such situations are not uncommon occurrences in everyday dentistry. In fact, dentures are the most ingested foreign body in the elderly patient population, and this is a particular risk if the dentures are lacking in stability. The present case report discusses the swallowing of an overdenture by a 95-year-old patient, who underwent endoscopic removal of the foreign body. The aim of this article is to hig

BACKGROUND: Edentulism conducts to a recognized impairment of oral function with both aesthetic and psychological changes. These patients suffer from a multiplicity of problems with their dentures, such as insufficient stability, retention and pain during mastication. The rehabilitation of a part edentulous patient can be established using a wide range of prosthetic treatment options. The overdenture treatment uses a removable total denture that overlies retained teeth, tooth roots, or dental implants. In the literature it was shown that patients with removable overdentures supported and retai

Jaw bones resorb when teeth are lost. People cannot function as well with complete dentures compared with their natural teeth. As more people are living longer and these cumulative effects become increasingly documented, dentists in the 1970s attached more importance to keeping teeth. The concept of overdentures developed as a simple and economic alternative to prolong the retention and function of the last few teeth in a compromised dentition. The previous option was extensive fixed prosthodontics. An overdenture is a complete or removable partial denture that has one or more tooth roots to p

PURPOSE: To report the evaluation of in vivo retention forces after replacement of O-rings in one-piece mini dental implants (MDIs), retaining mandibular implant overdentures (IODs) with ball/O-ring attachments during 10 years assessed.
METHODS: Twenty patients received new complete dentures, which were converted into IODs through stabilization with four MDIs (Condent GmbH; diameter: 1.8 mm) placed in the interforaminal region. Retention forces were measured at the male and female parts at baseline, 5, and 10 years using a validated strain gauge. Fourteen patients completed the 10-year follow

OBJECTIVE: To compare clinical outcomes in atrophic (AM) and non-atrophic (NAM) mandibles of edentulous patients rehabilitated with mandibular removable complete dentures (CD) or implant mandibular overdentures (IMO).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Non-randomized clinical studies were searched in 8 databases. Articles were assessed by the risk of bias in non-randomized studies of interventions. Datasets for CDs comparing AM and NAM were plotted [masticatory function, maximum occlusal biting force (MOBF), oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL)]. Residual ridge (AM and NAM) data (masticatory func

PURPOSE: The objective of the present systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess randomised controlled trials (RCTs) which assessed the efficacy of mini dental implants (MDIs) and standard-diameter implants (SDIs) in retaining mandibular overdentures (MO).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The focused question was "Is there a difference in the mechanical stability between MDIs and SDIs in retaining MO?" Indexed databases were searched up to and including November 2023 using different keywords. Boolean operators were used during the search. The literature was searched in accordance with the PRISMA

A technique for the virtual designing of retentive attachment inserts for bar-retained 2-implant mandibular overdentures is described. The bar attachment is scanned intraorally, the retentive insert designed with the MESHMIXER software program, and the file 3D printed in resin, which is replicated in polyetheretherketone (PEEK). The technique offers high-quality inserts with good retention that can replace the conventional nylon inserts and reduce the number of maintenance visits and the frequency of changing the bar attachment.

Our suprastructures for blade vent implants are purely tissue-borne constructions. The retainers fixed to the denture base (Dolder jacket or Gilmore rider) are attached to the implant bar to guide the movement of the saddles. In addition, this is to counteract lifting to the dental replacement by the tongue or the muscles of the floor of the mouth. Cases in which this therapeutic method was applied are presented.

PURPOSE: To assess oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and patient satisfaction with a three-implant-retained mandibular overdenture.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this randomized crossover clinical trial, 20 edentulous patients received a new set of conventional complete dentures (CDs; baseline). Subsequently, three implants were placed in the anterior mandible: two were placed in the canine regions bilaterally and one in the midline. After successful osseointegration, CDs were attached to the implants using resilient attachments. The overdenture was retained either by three implants (t

In contemporary implant and prosthodontic practice, high levels of surgical and biologic success rates have been achieved. However, mechanical and technical complications continue to exist. Of these, one of the biggest challenges to the clinician is the conservative retrieval of fractured screw fragments from within the implants and/or abutments. While removal is desirable, the fragments cannot always be removed, and alternative solutions for the management of such clinical situations must be considered. This clinical report describes the replacement of 2 fractured, irretrievable, Locator abut

BACKGROUND: Immediate rehabilitation is a considerable therapeutic challenge but is necessary for edentulous patients with oronasal fistulas, especially those with inadequate residual bone and a history of radiotherapy.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of a 63-year-old patient who was missing the majority of his maxillary teeth and who had a defect due to palatal mucoepidermoid carcinoma resection. The patient also received radiotherapy twice within one year postoperatively. An implant-supported prosthesis with an obturator was fabricated immediately.
CONCLUSION: This technique impro

This report of four clinical cases aims to illustrate the use of a lateral implant as a solution for implant overdentures in the mandible in different clinical situations. The first two cases describe the clinical situations of patients wearing two-implant mandibular overdentures until the failure of one of the implants, one due to implant loss and the other due to a fracture of an abutment screw, and how the conditions were managed. The third case illustrates the placement of a single implant to retain an overdenture, where a midline implant, as originally planned, was not feasible due to ana

AIM: To evaluate bar-supported maxillary implant overdenture treatment when supported by either four or six implants after 10 years.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Edentulous subjects with maxillary denture complaints and ample bone volume to facilitate implants in the anterior region of the maxilla were planned for implant overdenture treatment, randomized to receive either four implants (n = 25) or six implants (n = 25) and subsequently evaluated after 10 years of function. Outcome variables included peri-implant bone-level changes, implant and overdenture survival, complications, presence of plaqu
