ALPPS: from human to mice highlighting accelerated and novel mechanisms of liver regeneration.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a reproducible animal model mimicking a novel 2-staged hepatectomy (ALPPS: Associating Liver Partition and Portal Vein Ligation for Staged Hepatectomy) and explore the underlying mechanisms. BACKGROUND: ALPPS combines portal vein ligation (PVL) with liver transection (step I), followed by resection of the deportalized liver (step II) within 2 weeks after the first surgery. This approach induces accelerated hypertrophy of the liver remnant to enable resection of massive tumor load. To explore the underlying mechanisms, we designed the first animal model of ALPPS in mice.

Implantation of cultured sensory neurons and Schwann cells into lesioned neonatal rat spinal cord. I. Methods for preparing implants from dissociated cells.

Our goal was to devise methods of implanting defined populations of the cellular constituents of peripheral nerve into regions of spinal cord injury. This objective derived from the knowledge that the cellular environment of peripheral nerve is known to be supportive of axon regeneration from both central and peripheral neurons. Two of the constituents of the peripheral nerve environment known to influence axonal growth are the Schwann cell and extracellular matrix (particularly basal lamina), both of which can be obtained in culture. We describe here large-scale methods of establishing purifi

Perspectives from the Hispanic community on access to information about employment rights for people with disabilities in the U.S. Great Lakes region.

PURPOSE: This study examined the barriers Hispanic community members face in accessing information about employment rights under Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Although the ADA provides legal workplace protections, Hispanic individuals with disabilities often remain under-informed and underserved, revealing a critical gap in outreach, education, and equitable access to rights-based information. This research centers on community perspectives on how ADA-related employment information is accessed and understood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-two semi-structured interviews

Reflections of the 1944 Ahiska exile on Ahlat cuisine.

INTRODUCTION: Following the forced deportation of 1944 under Soviet rule, Ahıska Turks were dispersed across various regions, seeking to preserve their cultural identity despite repeated displacement. This study examines the reflections and continuity of Ahıska culinary culture within Ahlat (Bitlis) cuisine. Specifically, it investigates how traditional culinary practices have been preserved, transformed, and adapted through interactions with the local culinary culture of Ahlat, exploring how this community preserved its identity through foodways after exile. METHODS: Adopting a qualitative,

An Equity-Based Scoring System for Evaluating Surveillance-Related Harm in Public Health Crises.

BACKGROUND: Although surveillance systems used to mitigate disasters serve essential public health functions, communities of color have experienced disproportionate harms (eg, criminalization) as a result of historic and enhanced surveillance. METHODS: To address this, we developed and piloted a novel, equity-based scoring system to evaluate surveillance systems regarding their potential and actual risk of adverse effects on communities made vulnerable through increased exposure to policing, detention/incarceration, deportation, and disruption of access to social services or public resources.

How Do Risk Environment Factors Influence Perpetration of Partner Violence among Male Migrant and Non-migrant Market Workers in Central Asia?

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has emerged as a serious public health issue in migrant communities in Central Asia and globally. To date, however, research on risk factors associated with male perpetration of IPV among migrants remains scant. This study aims to examine risk environment theory-driven factors associated with male perpetration of IPV in the prior 6 months. We recruited, enrolled, and surveyed a respondent-driven sample of 1342 male market workers in Almaty, Kazakhstan, that included 562 (42%) non-migrants defined as Kazakhstan citizens who reside in Almaty; 502 (37%) external mi

Tuberculosis in migrant populations. A systematic review of the qualitative literature.

BACKGROUND: The re-emergence of tuberculosis (TB) in low-incidence countries and its disproportionate burden on immigrants is a public health concern posing specific social and ethical challenges. This review explores perceptions, knowledge, attitudes and treatment adherence behaviour relating to TB and their social implications as reported in the qualitative literature. METHODS: Systematic review in four electronic databases. Findings from thirty selected studies extracted, tabulated, compared and synthesized. FINDINGS: TB was attributed to many non-exclusive causes including air-born trans

Association of postmigration stressors and intolerance of uncertainty to posttraumatic stress disorder in asylum seekers: the moderating role of environmental sensitivity.

INTRODUCTION: Asylum seekers are frequently exposed to severe pre- and postmigration stressors that place them at elevated risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While much is known about trauma exposure, less research has examined how individual differences in environmental sensitivity-defined as heightened responsiveness to contextual influences-shape mental health outcomes in this population. This study explores how postmigration living difficulties and intolerance of uncertainty relate to specific PTSD symptom clusters, and whether environmental sensitivity moderates these associat

Illegality as risk factor: a survey of unauthorized migrant patients in a Berlin clinic.

Unauthorized migrants face health disadvantages in many receiving nations. However, few studies have explored precisely how the condition of "illegality" influences illness experiences, medical treatment, and convalescence. This article presents a case study from Germany (2004-2006 and 2008), where unauthorized migrants face limited access to health care and the threat of deportation results in avoidance of services and treatment delays. This is confounded by unique laws which essentially criminalize health care workers for aiding migrants. This article provides a snapshot of 183 patients who

Enhancement of root abscisic acid mediated osmotic regulation by macroalgal compounds promotes adaptability of rice (Oryza sativa L.) in response to progressive metal ion mediated environmental stress.

Soil deterioration is a major cause of poor agricultural productivity, necessitating sufficient nutrient inputs like fertilizers and amendments for sustainable use. As one such strategy, the current study evaluates the potential of Sargassum wightii, a brown seaweed extract, as an osmopriming agent to improve seed germination, early establishment, and competent seedling performances in acidic soil. The elemental makeup of seaweed extract (BS) showed that it included major plant macro (Potassium, Nitrogen and Phosphorous), as well as micronutrients (Magnesium and Iron) and trace elements (Zinc,

The Global Impact of COVID-19 on Mental Health of General Population: A Narrative Review.

Mental wellness is a crucial component of happiness. A person is happy with better relationships, financial stability, good mental health, and longevity. Disinformation, stigma, ongoing isolation, and disruption of daily activities are all quite prevalent. Any of these elements may impact one's mental health. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has taken several steps to address COVID's mental health concerns. In addition to frontline healthcare personnel, who engage in dealing with COVID-19, the general population's mental health was also at stake due to the unprecedented and catastroph

Auxiliary Liver Transplantation for Cirrhosis: From APOLT to RAPID: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: To survey the available literature regarding the use of auxiliary liver transplantation (ALT) in the setting of cirrhosis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND: ALT is a type of liver transplantation (LT) procedure in which part of the cirrhotic liver is resected and part of the liver graft is transplanted. The cirrhotic liver left in situ acts as an auxiliary liver until the graft has reached sufficient volume. Recently, a 2-stage concept named RAPID (Resection and Partial Liver segment 2/3 transplantation with Delayed total hepatectomy) was developed, which combines hypertrophy of the small gra

Life on the margins: the experiences of sexual violence and exploitation among Eritrean asylum-seeking women in Israel.

BACKGROUND: Eritrean migrants in Israel, the majority of whom are seeking asylum, have limited access to institutional support. While the temporary group protection granted to Eritreans by Israel ensures that they are not deported, it does not confer permanent legal status, nor does it allow access to the formal work sector. This study qualitatively explores how political and economic marginalization increases the risk of sexual and other forms of violence as well as the exploitation of Eritrean women asylum seekers living in Israel. METHODS: Twenty-five interviews with key informants, twelve

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and birth outcomes in California: a quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program provides temporary relief from deportation and work permits for previously undocumented immigrants who arrived as children. DACA faced direct threats under the Trump administration. There is select evidence of the short-term impacts of DACA on population health, including on birth outcomes, but limited understanding of the long-term impacts. METHODS: We evaluated the association between DACA program and birth outcomes using California birth certificate data (2009-2018) and a difference-in-differences approach to compare pos

Activation of the novel prothrombinase, fg12, as a basis for the pregnancy complications spontaneous abortion and pre-eclampsia.

PROBLEM: Impaired trophoblast invasion during the first trimester of pregnancy is linked to spontaneous abortion, and defective invasion in the second trimester to hypertension + proteinuria (pre-eclampsia). Hypertension developing during the third trimester of human pregnancy represents, in part, a corrective response in the mother to provide adequate placental perfusion for fetal growth when trophoblast has not to invaded and converted the myometrial porprtion of maternal spiral arteries into to low resistance-high capacitance conduits. Access to Vaccines Among Asylum Seekers, Refugees, and Undocumented Migrants Across the Migratory Cycle in the European Union, European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom: A Scoping Review.

Introduction: Inequities in access to medicines persist for asylum seekers, refugees, and undocumented migrants in Europe. For vaccines, access gaps not only exist for these groups in childhood routine immunization, but also for life-course and catch-up vaccinations. As part of a broader project examining access to medicines and vaccines for migrants across all stages of the migration cycle, this scoping review synthesizes evidence on the determinants of access to vaccines. Methods: We conducted a scoping review across PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL),
