Infants distinguish and represent pattern as an object feature from externally generated patterns superimposed on real, 3-dimensional objects' surfaces.

As infants form object representations, the patterns viewed on objects' surfaces may be challenging to decipher because these patterns may be created from the surface reflectance of an object (an object property) or from an external source, such as a cast shadow. We tested 7 ½-month-old infants' use of cues that specify the source of patterns seen on the surfaces of real, 3-dimensional objects to individuate those objects. Results suggest that when forming object representations based on patterns, 7½-month-olds rely heavily on temporal and depth cues to distinguish patterns inherent to the obj

Where is the moving object now? Judgments of instantaneous position show poor temporal precision (SD = 70 ms).

Humans can precisely judge relative location between two objects moving with the same speed and direction, as numerous studies have shown. However, the precision for localizing a single moving object relative to stationary references remains a neglected topic. Here, subjects reported the perceived location of a moving object at the time of a cue. The variability of the reported positions increased steeply with the speed of the object, such that the distribution of responses corresponds to the distance that the object traveled in 70 ms. This surprisingly large temporal imprecision depends littl

Infant's ability to form a common representation of an object's shape from different pictorial depth cues: A transfer-across-cues study.

The purpose of this study was to explore the infants' ability to perceive 3D shape from pictorial depth cues. While several previous studies showed that infants discriminate between displays which differ in pictorial information for depth and can use this information to direct reaching, it is not clear that infants form a common representation of an object's shape from different pictorial depth cues. To clarify the infants' ability for pictorial depth cues, we employed a "transfer-across-depth-cues" method with four-to-five-month-old and six-to-seven-month-old infants. Using this method, we ex

Model eye evaluation of new extended depth of focus designs versus defocus-based lenslet designs for myopia management.

SIGNIFICANCE: Objective through-focus testing with phase alteration utilizing subelements technology indicates improvements in retinal image contrast across a range of retinal defocus. If validated in clinical trials, this approach may provide a better visual experience for wearers, potentially supporting compliance and myopia management outcomes. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the optical performance of modified axicons and modified light sword elements of phase alteration utilizing subelements lens design (test), compared with two defocus-based control lenslet designs, defocus incorp

Binocular mirror-symmetric microsaccadic sampling enables Drosophila hyperacute 3D vision.

SignificanceTo move efficiently, animals must continuously work out their x,y,z positions with respect to real-world objects, and many animals have a pair of eyes to achieve this. How photoreceptors actively sample the eyes' optical image disparity is not understood because this fundamental information-limiting step has not been investigated in vivo over the eyes' whole sampling matrix. This integrative multiscale study will advance our current understanding of stereopsis from static image disparity comparison to a morphodynamic active sampling theory. It shows how photomechanical photorecepto

PPAP: Perspective Projection Augment Platform with Pan-Tilt Actuation for Improved Spatial Perception.

In this paper, we propose PPAP, an augmented reality platform with an actuated projector for dynamic user-perspective projection. In PPAP, a stationary camera is used jointly with a pan-tilt motorized projector-camera unit. With the servo control of the steerable pan-tilt system, the system is able to continuously orient itself to match the user's view center of the projection-mapped surface. This provides users with greatly widened viewing angles in the augmented scene, when compared to the stationary projection. Through user studies, in which users judged the size and distance of a projected

[Interpretation the consensus of strabismus classification].

Strabismus is a deviation of the visual axes relative to each other and is a very common eye disease. Strabismus is not only a cosmetic disease but more importantly damage to visual acuity, binocular vision and stereopsis. There are many different strabismus forms. It is very difficult to accommodate all the different clinical forms with only one classification. Different author has different classification because of different concerns. In order to avoid clinical confusion and provide references for clinicians, literatures from mainstream domestic and international journals and new revised cl

Constraints on human stereo dot matching.

Statistical efficiency was used as a model-free measure of stereo performance to explore how well human observers perform for a range of stereoscopic stimuli with varying amounts of added disparity noise. When the stimulus was a random dot stereogram in which perturbations of disparity were applied independently to each dot, most of the dots had very different disparities from their neighbours and efficiency was found to fall as the level of disparity noise was increased. It was hypothesized that the fall of efficiency was due to difficulty with dot matching, so random-dot stereograms were cre

[A case with stereopsis following early surgery for unilateral congenital cataract].

We report a case of stereopsis following early surgery for congenital monocular cataract. The patient was a 3.75-year-old girl who underwent early surgery for congenital monocular cataract at the age of 19 weeks and received an immediate gas-permeable hard contact lens fitting and occlusion therapy consisting of daily patching the sound eye for 6 hours. During the subsequent years, patching was increased to 50% to 80% of the waking day. Three years and two months postoperatively, she showed good visual acuity of 0.7 in the operated eye and also demonstrated stereoacuity of 1200 to 1500 seconds

The visibility of color breakup and a means to reduce it.

Color breakup is an artifact seen on displays that present colors sequentially. When the eye tracks a moving object on such a display, different colors land on different places on the retina, and this gives rise to visible color fringes at the object's leading and trailing edges. Interestingly, color breakup is also observed when the eye is stationary and an object moves by. Using a novel psychophysical procedure, we measured breakup both when viewers tracked and did not track a moving object. Breakup was somewhat more visible in the tracking than in the non-tracking condition. The video frame

Experience affects the use of ego-motion signals during 3D shape perception.

Experience has long-term effects on perceptual appearance (Q. Haijiang, J. A. Saunders, R. W. Stone, & B. T. Backus, 2006). We asked whether experience affects the appearance of structure-from-motion stimuli when the optic flow is caused by observer ego-motion. Optic flow is an ambiguous depth cue: a rotating object and its oppositely rotating, depth-inverted dual generate similar flow. However, the visual system exploits ego-motion signals to prefer the percept of an object that is stationary over one that rotates (M. Wexler, F. Panerai, I. Lamouret, & J. Droulez, 2001). We replicated this fi

Visual fields for frontal plane motion and for changing size.

Thresholds were measured in 15 subjects for 2-Hz oscillations of size and for 2-Hz oscillatory motion in the frontal plane using test squares of side lengths 0.5 degrees, 1.0 degrees and 2.0 degrees. Size-oscillation thresholds were lowest (i.e. sensitivity was greatest) for the 2.0 degrees square while thresholds were highest (i.e. sensitivity was least) for the 0.5 degrees square in 28 of 34 tests. Frontal plane motion thresholds, on the other hand, did not generally depend on square size. Equal-threshold contours in the visual field were roughly elliptical in 10 of 13 subjects for both type

Neurons with complex visual properties in the superior colliculus of the macaque monkey.

Single neurons were recorded from the superficial layers of the superior colliculus of immobilized monkeys (Macaca mulatta and Macaca irus). Two main functional types of neurons were found. The neurons of the first type (Type I neurons) responded well to simple stationary and moving stimuli such as spots, bars or slits of light. The latency of their response was 41 +/- 6 ms. They were not directionally selective and responded to a large range of velocities. The neurons of the second type (Type II neurons) responded very poorly to simple visual stimuli and their activation required real objects

Depth-based visual capture of sound in virtual reality is driven by perceived distance.

Visual information typically dominates auditory cues in spatial localization, particularly in depth, leading to the proximity image effect (PIE) in which displaced sounds are perceived closer to plausible visual objects than they actually are (visual capture). It is unclear whether fundamental properties of audiovisual integration generalize to virtual environments where spatial perception is systematically distorted. Across two experiments, we tested whether real-world sound sources are visually captured by virtual objects in immersive virtual reality (VR). Participants completed a perceptual

Representation of the perceived 3-D object shape in the human lateral occipital complex.

We used human functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to test whether the human lateral occipital complex (LOC), an area known to be involved in the analysis of visual shape, represents the perceived 3-D shape of objects or simply their 2-D contours. We employed an fMRI adaptation paradigm, in which repeated presentation of a stimulus results in decreased responses compared to responses to different stimuli. We found adaptation in the LOC for images of objects with the same perceived 3-D shape structure but different 2-D contours that resulted from small rotations of the objects in the fr

Wallpaper illusion: cause of disorientation and falls on escalators.

The wallpaper illusion, first described over a century ago, can occur when a person with normal binocular vision views a pattern that is periodic in the horizontal meridian of the visual field. Escalator trends present such a pattern. Evidence is presented favoring the view that disorientation experienced by escalator riders is caused by this illusion. Possibly some of the estimated 60,000 escalator falls occurring in the United States each year are linked to it.

Development of three-dimensional form perception.

In three experiments with infants and one with adults we explored the generality, limitations, and informational bases of early form perception. In the infant studies we used a habituation-of-looking-time procedure and the method of Kellman (1984), in which responses to three-dimensional (3-D) form were isolated by habituating 16-week-old subjects to a single object in two different axes of rotation in depth, and testing afterward for dishabituation to the same object and to a different object in a novel axis of rotation. In Experiment 1, continuous optical transformations given by moving 16-w
