Detection of Ehrlichia canis in Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Dermacentor marginatus from sylvatic environments in Southern Italy.

Tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) represent an increasing threat to both human and animal health, driven by the expanding distribution and abundance of tick populations, even in regions traditionally considered unsuitable for their development. Among TBPs, Ehrlichia canis is primarily known as the causative agent of canine ehrlichiosis, mainly transmitted by the brown dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus. However, recent evidence indicates a broader host range, including potential zoonotic transmission to humans. In this study, adult ticks were collected from carcasses of domestic and wild animals and

First evidence of conspecific hyperparasitism in Dermacentor marginatus nymphs feeding on a rabbit under experimental conditions.

Hyperparasitism in ticks, particularly in nymphs of the order Ixodidae, is a rare phenomenon. In our laboratory tick colony, female rabbits are used as a blood source for the ticks, housing them under controlled conditions. Feeding Dermacentor marginatus nymphs monitoring was performed daily, and engorged and detached ticks were collected and stored in desiccators at constantly 24 ± 2 °C and 85-90% relative humidity (16 h light/8 hours dark). Nymphs suspected of conspecific hyperparasitism were preserved in ethanol for analysis and imaging. This study presents the first documented case of hype

Genetic diversity and population structure of the Dermacentor nuttalli in Northern China inferred from microsatellite markers.

BACKGROUND: Dermacentor nuttalli is a dominant tick species in northern China and adjacent regions, where it poses significant threats to public health and the livestock industry through the transmission of diverse zoonotic pathogens. Understanding its population genetic structure is crucial for elucidating dispersal patterns and informing control strategies. However, the lack of high-resolution molecular markers has hindered such investigations. This study aimed to develop microsatellite markers and use them to assess the genetic diversity and structure of D. nuttalli populations across north

Prevalence of tick-borne encephalitis virus in questing Dermacentor reticulatus and Ixodes ricinus ticks in Lithuania.

The Baltic States are the region in Europe where tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is most endemic, with one-third of the European TBE cases detected in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. With the Czech Republic and Germany, Lithuania has among the highest population incidences of TBE. Ticks from the Ixodidae family are the main vectors of the TBE virus (TBEV) in Europe. However, there is still a lack of data on the prevalence of TBEV in ticks in different parts of Lithuania. This study analysed the current prevalence of TBEV in the two most common tick species distributed in Lithuania: Ixodes ricinus

Phylogenetic studies of bacteria (Rickettsia, Coxiella, and Anaplasma) in Amblyomma and Dermacentor ticks in Thailand and their co-infection.

In this study, we attempted to detect Rickettsia, Coxiella and Anaplasma bacteria in one hundred and fourteen-Dermacentor and thirty three-Amblyomma unfed adult ticks that were collected from under leaves along animal trails at different places across Thailand. PCR amplification was used to identify bacterial infection with general conserved sequences of bacteria. The results revealed single infection in Amblyomma testudinarium ticks with Rickettsia (24%) and Coxiella (6%). Anaplasma bacteria were often detected in Dermacentor auratus ticks (32%). Coxiella spp. were detected in Dermacentor atr

Novel foci of Dermacentor reticulatus ticks infected with Babesia canis and Babesia caballi in the Netherlands and in Belgium.

BACKGROUND: Autochthonous populations of Dermacentor reticulatus ticks in the Netherlands were discovered after fatal cases of babesiosis occurred in resident dogs in 2004. The presence of D. reticulatus in the Netherlands has also linked with the emergence of piroplasmosis in the resident horse population. The aim of this study was to put together results of continued surveillance of field sites and hosts for this tick in the Netherlands and also in Belgium and determine their infection status for Babesia and Theileria species. METHODS: Ticks were collected from the vegetation at 11 location

The infection of questing Dermacentor reticulatus ticks with Babesia canis and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in the Chernobyl exclusion zone.

Tick occurrence was studied in the Chernobyl exclusion zone (CEZ) during the August-October 2009-2012. Dermacentor reticulatus ticks were collected using the flagging method and then screened for infection with Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Babesia canis by a PCR method incorporating specific primers and sequence analysis. The prevalence of infection with B. canis canis and A. phagocytophilum was found to be 3.41% and 25.36%, respectively. The results present the first evidence of B. canis canis and A. phagocytophilum in questing D. reticulatus ticks from the Chernobyl exclusion zone. They als

Prevention of transmission of Babesia canis by Dermacentor reticulatus ticks to dogs treated with an imidacloprid/flumethrin collar.

A group of 8 dogs was treated with an imidacloprid/flumethrin collar (Seresto(®)) 28 days prior to infestation with adult Dermacentor reticulatus ticks, infected with Babesia canis. The ability of the collar to prevent transmission of B. canis in the treated group was compared to an untreated control group. All 8 dogs in the untreated control group became infected with B. canis parasites, which were detected in blood smears as early as day 6 post tick-application. All control dogs developed clinical signs of babesiosis and were rescue-treated with imidocarb dipropionate. These dogs also develo

Foci report on indigenous Dermacentor reticulatus populations in Belgium and a preliminary study of associated babesiosis pathogens.

The occurrence of autochthonous clinical cases of canine and equine babesiosis in Belgium during the last two decades suggests that the vector of the pathogens responsible for these diseases, Dermacentor reticulatus (Ixodida: Ixodidae), may be present in this country. Consequently, evidence for the presence of this tick species in different locations within Belgium was investigated. Four different locations were monitored by flagging in 2010; these included the locations at which D. reticulatus was previously found on a dog in 2009 and on two red deer in 2007. Two different species of tick wer

First detection of spotted fever group rickettsiae in Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor reticulatus ticks in the UK.

A preliminary study was conducted to determine the presence of spotted fever rickettsiae in two species of British tick (Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor reticulatus). The 16S rRNA gene of Rickettsia spp. was detected in 39/401 (9·7%) of ticks tested, including 22/338 (6·5%) I. ricinus and 17/63 (27%) D. reticulatus. Some positive I. ricinus samples showed 100% homology with Rickettsia helvetica (10/22), and most positive D. reticulatus showed 100% homology with R. raoultii (13/17). Five other Rickettsia spp. were detected exhibiting 96-99% homology. Ticks positive for rickettsiae were collected

New localities of Dermacentor reticulatus tick (vector of Babesia canis canis) in central and eastern Poland.

Dermacentor reticulatus tick is a vector and final host of Babesia canis canis, protozoan parasite of the dog. In Poland and other European countries, endemic regions for canine babesiosis caused by B. canis canis are the same as endemic regions for D. reticulatus. In many of these regions, canine babesiosis is the most prevalent tick-borne disease in dogs. In Europe, increasing range of geographical distribution of D. reticulatus is observed. A consequence of this fact may be increasing range of canine babesiosis. D. reticulatus is one of the most common ticks occurring in Poland, however, it

Vector competence of human-biting ticks Ixodes scapularis, Amblyomma americanum and Dermacentor variabilis for Powassan virus.

BACKGROUND: Powassan virus (POWV; genus Flavivirus) is the sole North American member of the tick-borne encephalitis sero-complex and an increasing public health threat in the USA. Maintained in nature by Ixodes spp. ticks, POWV has also been isolated from species of other hard tick genera, yet it is unclear if these species can serve as vectors. Dermacentor variabilis and Amblyomma americanum share geographic and ecologic overlap with Ixodes spp. ticks and POWV transmission foci, raising the possibility that POWV could become established in these tick species and leading to range expansion an

Discriminating Francisella tularensis and Francisella-like endosymbionts in Dermacentor reticulatus ticks: evaluation of current molecular techniques.

Francisella tularensis, the causative agent of tularemia, is commonly transmitted by ticks. To ensure accurate F. tularensis reporting rates in epidemiological surveys, specific discrimination between F. tularensis and Francisella-like tick endosymbionts (FLEs) is absolutely critical. Four molecular available techniques capable of distinguishing Francisella spp. were compared here for the first time in French Dermacentor reticulatus ticks in order to estimate their specificity as well as their ease and speed of use. Results showed that tul4 and fopA real-time PCR assays can easily and effectiv

Dermacentor reticulatus ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) distribution in north-eastern Poland: an endemic area of tick-borne diseases.

Dermacentor reticulatus is the second most important tick species in Poland. Although the north-eastern region of Poland is considered typical for D. reticulatus and is treated as a contiguous area of Eastern populations of the meadow ticks, the occurrence of this tick species in this region to date has been recorded as separate foci. The present report supplements data on the geographical distribution of D. reticulatus in urban and natural biotopes of north-eastern Poland (Warmia and Mazury province). In 2015-2017 (during the springtime activity of ticks) adult questing D. reticulatus were fo

Ability of Ixodes persulcatus, Haemaphysalis concinna and Dermacentor silvarum ticks to acquire and transstadially transmit Borrelia garinii.

In China, the ability of Ixodes persulcatus, Haemaphysalis concinna and Dermacentor silvarum to transmit Borrelia spirochetes was determined under laboratory conditions. Results showed that all three tick species can acquire spirochetes by feeding on infected mice. However, the capability of the three species to maintain spirochetes was different. Only I. persulcatus is able to maintain spirochetes alive during molting, and subsequent tick stages transmitted the infection to naive mice. In H. concinna and D. silvarum ticks, spirochetes could not survive after the digestion period of blood and
