Ultraviolet filters are the most common topical photoallergens. Although currently not available on the US market, methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol (referred to as bisoctrizole on product labels) represents a new class of UV filters that have both organic and inorganic properties and are widely available in different preparations in Europe, South America, and Asia. We report two patients with atopic dermatitis and chronic actinic dermatitis who had positive patch- and photopatch-test reactions, which suggested both an allergic contact and a photoallergic contact dermatitis f

Photoallergy to vitamin B6 is very rare; only a few cases of contact dermatitis and one case of photosensitive dermatitis due to pyritinol have been reported. We report here the first case of photoallergic drug eruption due to pyridoxine hydrochloride. A 71-year-old man developed papulo-squamous erythemata which were confined to sun-exposed sites. Photopatch testing, together with the clinical course, was helpful in reaching the initial diagnosis; this was confirmed by an oral challenge test. Photoallergic drug eruption due to vitamin B6 should be considered a rare cause of photosensitive derm

Many--topically applied or systemically administered--substances may trigger photoallergic skin reactions following exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. While most cases represent photoallergic contact dermatitis due to topically applied agents, systemically triggered photoallergy is considerably less common. The photopatch test--a UV-exposed variant of the conventional patch test--is the mainstay in the diagnosis of photoallergic or phototoxic reactions.

Photoallergic and allergic contact dermatitis are examples of type IV hypersensitivity reactions that involve T cell-mediated immune responses against haptens that come into contact with the skin. These two types of allergies differ in that for routine contact allergens, the hapten is usually a chemically reactive species that readily couples to host proteins; for photoallergic reactions, UV light (320 - 400 nm) is necessary to generate ("photoactivate") the chemically reactive hapten. From this point on, both photoallergic and allergic contact dermatitis are likely to proceed along the same p

Photoallergic dermatitis, caused by pharmaceuticals and other consumer products, is a very important issue in human health. However, S10 guidelines of the International Conference on Harmonization do not recommend the existing prediction methods for photoallergy because of their low predictability in human cases. We applied local lymph node assay (LLNA), a reliable, quantitative skin sensitization prediction test, to develop a new photoallergy prediction method. This method involves a three-step approach: (1) ultraviolet (UV) absorption analysis; (2) determination of no observed adverse effect

Photoallergic dermatoses are skin lesions following sun exposure, characterized by activation of immunological mechanisms, involving photosensitizers and photoallergens that can cause photosensibilization in some individuals. In this group of disorders, photoallergic contact dermatitis should be accentuated. It manifests as contact allergic dermatitis on sun-exposed skin areas, following direct contact with photoallergens during UV exposure (predominantly UVA). Under influence of light, photosensitizers get activated, followed by fusion with cutaneous proteins which renders them to complete an

The inducing or exacerbating effect of sunlight on skin diseases is often not appreciated in tropical countries, perhaps because of the perennial presence of sunlight, and a retrospective review of photodermatoses seen in a referral skin clinic was therefore carried out. The photodermatoses seen were secondary photoaggravation of primary skin diseases (32.2%), systemic drug photosensitivity (11.3%), polymorphic light eruption (13%), chronic actinic dermatitis (5.3%), solar urticaria (5.3%), actinic prurigo (4%), photoallergic contact dermatitis (2.6%), porphyria (1.3%) and xeroderma pigmentosu

Glyphosate, a widely utilized herbicide, was evaluated for acute irritation, cumulative irritation, photoirritation and allergic and photoallergic contact potential in 346 volunteers. The herbicide was less irritant than a standard liquid dishwashing detergent and a general all purpose cleaner. There was no evidence for the induction of photoirritation, allergic or photoallergic contact dermatitis. 10% glyphosate in water is proposed as a diagnostic patch test concentration.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the common photoallergens in New Zealand, where ultraviolet exposure is particularly high. Availability of photopatch testing is limited because of it being performed in very few tertiary referral and contact dermatitis clinics.
OBJECTIVE: To review the photopatch testing experience in New Zealand.
METHOD: A retrospective review of all patients who underwent photopatch testing at a tertiary referral center in Auckland from 2008 to 2019 was performed.
RESULTS: Seventy patients had photopatch testing over the 12-year period. Of the 58 patients tested using th

BACKGROUND: Octocrylene is a new emerging photoallergen. We report and discuss 50 cases of photoallergic contact dermatitis from octocrylene use and/or positive photopatch test reactions to this UV filter and draw attention to the unexpected association in adults with a history of photoallergic contact dermatitis from ketoprofen.
OBSERVATIONS: Patients were divided in 3 groups: group A comprised 11 children; group B, 28 adults with a history of photoallergy from sunscreen products; and group C, 14 adults systematically tested with octocrylene because of a history of photoallergy from ketoprof

Topical ketoprofen (KP) is widely used because of its anti-inflammatory effect. Parallel with its popular usage, the number of reported cases of ketoprofen-induced photoallergic contact dermatitis has increased. A review of the literature was made to evaluate the spectrum of cross sensitization in patients with ketoprofen-induced photoallergic contact dermatitis using ketoprofen and other structurally similar chemicals and sunscreens, fragrance components, as well as the presence of prolonged photosensitivity related to it. Furthermore, the distinction between true cross-reactivity and concomi

A photohaptenic moiety is one of the salient properties of photoallergic chemicals. Clinically, it is likely that photohaptens are the main causative substances in photoallergic contact dermatitis and drug photoallergy. Photohaptens bind covalently to protein under exposure to ultraviolet A light (UVA). Because of this photocoupling ability, cells are easily photoderivatized with a photohapten by UVA irradiation, becoming immunogenic photohapten-modified cells. Langerhans cells photomodified with a photohapten can stimulate immune T cells when photomodification is performed with a non-phototox

As phototoxic and photoallergic reactions have been recognised as unwanted skin manifestations caused by any of several hundred substances, drugs and chemicals, it is essential to determine the potential photo-sensitising properties of such substances before they are introduced in clinical therapy or made available on the market, in order to avoid such reactions. In cases of phototoxic reactions, the patient presents with skin changes resembling sunburn, sometimes accompanied by blistering, whereas in cases of photoallergic reactions the skin changes are similar to those of allergic contact de

Indirect action of sun together with different exogenous agents (systemic medications and topically applied compounds) sometimes may result in phototoxicic and photoallergic reactions. Drug-induced photosensitivity reactions refer to the development of cutaneous disease as a result of the combined effects of a drug and light (mostly spectrum within the UVA and visible light range or UVB range). The aim of the review was to show the prominent features of phototoxic and photoallergic reactions, which occur in sun-exposed areas, including face, neck, hands and forearms. Phototoxic reactions are s

The purpose of this study was to determine the concentration, vehicle, and UVA dose suitable for avoiding phototoxic reactions while revealing photoallergic reactions to chlorpormazine (CPZ) in photopatch testing. Photopatch tests were performed on 27 volunteers with CPZ concentrations between 0.05% and 1% in water or Plastibase with UVA doses of 4 or 7 J/cm2. Photopatch tests were also carried out on 1 patient with photoallergic contact dermatitis to CPZ and an increased UVA sensitivity. The same concentration of CPZ caused phototoxic reactions less frequently and less intensely in Plastibase

BACKGROUND: The photopatch test is used to detect photoallergic reactions to various antigens such as sunscreens and drugs. Photosensitive dermatitis can be caused due to antigens like parthenium, fragrances, rubbers and metals. The photopatch test does not contain these antigens. Therefore, the Indian Standard Series (ISS) along with the Standard photopatch series from Chemotechnique Diagnostics, Sweden was used to detect light induced antigens.
AIM: To detect light induced antigens in patients with photosensitive dermatitis.
METHODS: This study was done in a descriptive, observer blinded m

Allergic contact dermatitis is a common diagnosis resulting from exposure to a chemical or chemicals in a patient's personal care products, home, or work environment. Once patch testing has been performed, the education and management process begins. After the causative allergens have been identified, patient education is critical to the proper treatment and management of the patient. This must occur if the dermatitis is to resolve. Detailed education is imperative, and several resources are highlighted. Photoallergic contact dermatitis and occupational contact dermatitis are other considerati
