Cognitive-behavioral management of motion sickness.

This monograph is intended to provide health professionals with information on a cognitive-behavioral technique which was developed to teach individuals who are prone to motion sickness to better cope with motion environments. It includes an overview of motion sickness, describing the signs and symptoms, etiology and incidence of this malady. Prevention and treatment are then reviewed, including both pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies. The historical background on the cognitive-behavioral technique is then discussed. This is followed by a review of supporting experimental work,

Treatment of recurrent nightmares by the dream reorganization approach.

Dream reorganization is introduced as a new theoretical and treatment approach to the alleviation of recurrent nightmares, derived from the principles of the Seligman and Yellen (1987) theory of dream construction. The cognitive-behavioral dream reorganization treatment package consists of two treatment components. Systematic desensitization with coping self-statements is employed to alter the emotional episode by counterconditioning a relaxation response to anxiety-evoking nightmare content. Guided rehearsal of mastery endings to dream content hierarchy items is added to modify the secondary

WADD-SEPD Consensus on Psychological Treatment of Dual Disorders II: Neurodevelopmental, Anxiety, Post-Traumatic Stress, Somatic Symptom, Eating, and Personality Disorders and Recommendations for Future Research.

Background/Objectives: The treatment of dual disorders (DDs) must be comprehensive and multidisciplinary. Evidence supports the effectiveness of psychotherapy in treating DDs. The second part of this consensus synthesizes the available evidence on psychological treatment for specific DDs. Methods: Two consensus methods were sequentially implemented: the nominal group technique and the Delphi method. Results: This consensus review encompassed a compilation of recommendations for the psychological treatment of neurodevelopmental, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, somatic symptom, eating, and perso

An experiment on fear of public speaking in virtual reality.

Can virtual reality exposure therapy be used to treat people with social phobia? To answer this question it is vital to known if people will respond to virtual humans (avatars) in a virtual social setting in the same way they would to real humans. If someone is extremely anxious with real people, will they also be anxious when faced with simulated people, despite knowing that the avatars are computer generated? In [17] we described a small pilot study that placed 10 people before a virtual audience. The purpose was to assess the extent to which social anxiety, specifically fear of public speak

The wreathing protocol: the imbrication of hypnosis and EMDR in the treatment of dissociative identity disorder and other dissociative responses. Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing.

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), a chronic childhood onset posttraumatic stress disorder, is currently recognized as a treatable condition. It is considered the paradigmatic dissociative condition and carries with it extreme posttraumatic symptomatology. Therapists skilled in the treatment of DID are typically fluent in the uses of hypnosis for stabilization, affect management, building a safe place and grounding to name of few. EMDR, which has come to the forefront of clinical awareness in the last ten years, seems aptly suited for the treatment of trauma, but can be destabilizing. This

Treatment of bulimia nervosa: when CBT fails.

Controlled studies have established manual-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is the first-line treatment of choice for bulimia nervosa. Nevertheless, its effectiveness is limited. On average, only 50% of patients cease being eating and purging. Of the remainder, some show partial improvement, whereas a small number derive no benefit at all. In treating nonresponders to CBT one option would be to use antidepressant medication. A second would be to adopt interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), an alternative psychological therapy with empirical support. However, both options have failed to red

[New elements in behavior therapy of a case of dog phobia in an adolescent patient with Down's syndrome. A critical study of the method].

A review of the actual literature shows, that we have no reports of successful behavioral methods for the treatment of mentally retarded children with phobias. This study suggests a new way for treating a dog-phobia of a seventeen year old boy with Downsyndrom, using a special form of flooding by including the Premack-principle. Problems of desensitization and other special effects during therapy of these patients are discussed.

Behavior management of aggressive sequela after Reye's syndrome.

This study describes the use of behavior management procedures to reduce the occurrence of severe behavioral sequela in a 14-year-old, post-Reye's syndrome male. Prior to intervention the client exhibited severe self-injurious, hyperaggressive, and food refusal behaviors that precluded any opportunities for rehabilitation, placed him at severe medical risk, and made him a candidate for institutional placement. With contingent restraint, in vivo desensitization, and reinforcement contingencies it was possible to control these behaviors and begin intensive rehabilitation. Subsequently, the clien

The Effectiveness of Psychological Treatment for Reducing Recidivism in Child Molesters: A Systematic Review of Randomized and Nonrandomized Studies.

In this systematic review, the effectiveness of psychological treatment interventions for child molesters was examined. Studies were restricted to randomized control trials (RCTs), controlled trials, and cohort designs where recidivism had been used as the outcome variable. ASSIA, NCJRS, Medline, PsychINFO, EMBASE, Pro-requests Dissertations and Theses A&I, and the Cochrane Library were searched. Ten experts were contacted and the reference lists of 12 systematic reviews and 40 primary studies were observed. The number of hits was 3,019, of which 564 duplicates, 2,388 irrelevant references, an

Treatment of specific phobia in adults.

This is a comprehensive review of treatment studies in specific phobia. Acute and long-term efficacy studies of in vivo exposure, virtual reality, cognitive therapy and other treatments from 1960 to 2005 were retrieved from computer search engines. Although specific phobia is a chronic illness and animal extinction studies suggest that relapse is a common phenomenon, little is known about long-term outcome. Treatment gains are generally maintained for one year, but longer follow-up studies are needed to better understand and prevent relapse. Acutely, the treatments are not equally effective am

Responses to symptom induction exercises in panic disorder.

Exposure to panic symptoms (interoceptive exposure) is often included as part of treatment for panic disorder (PD), although little is known about the relative effects of particular symptom induction exercises. This study describes responses of individuals with PD and nonclinical controls to 13 standard symptom induction exercises and 3 control exercises. Generally, individuals with PD responded more strongly to symptom induction exercises than did controls. The exercises producing the most fear included spinning, hyperventilation, breathing through a straw, and using a tongue depressor. This

Evaluation of a meridian-based intervention, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), for reducing specific phobias of small animals.

This study explored whether a meridian-based procedure, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), can reduce specific phobias of small animals under laboratory-controlled conditions. Randomly assigned participants were treated individually for 30 min with EFT (n = 18) or a comparison condition, diaphragmatic breathing (DB) (n = 17). ANOVAS revealed that EFT produced significantly greater improvement than did DB behaviorally and on three self-report measures, but not on pulse rate. The greater improvement for EFT was maintained, and possibly enhanced, at six- to nine-months follow-up on the behaviora

Fear of storms and hurricanes in Antillean and Belgian children.

The present study assessed fear of hurricanes in children who had been confronted with this natural event (i.e., Antillean children, n=161). Their fear levels were compared to those of children who are unfamiliar with such an event (i.e., Belgian children, n=185). Antillean children reported significantly higher levels of fear of storms than Belgian children did, thus providing support for the notion that exposure to dangerous events promotes children's fears of those events. Surprisingly, however, Antillean children had lower scores on the 'Hurricanes' item than Belgian children. Plausibly, d

Development of virtual environment for treating acrophobia.

Virtual Reality (VR) is a new technology that makes humans communicate with computer. It allows the user to see, hear, feel and interact in a three-dimensional virtual world created graphically. Virtual Reality Therapy (VRT), based on this sophisticated technology, has been recently used in the treatment of subjects diagnosed with acrophobia, a disorder that is characterized by marked anxiety upon exposure to heights, avoidance of heights, and a resulting interference in functioning. Conventional virtual reality system for the treatment of acrophobia has a limitation in scope that it is based

Combined behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapy of agoraphobia.

There are few controlled studies of combined behavioral-pharmacological treatments of agoraphobia with panic. This review of the empirical evidence from studies using exposure in vivo as the behavioral modality and imipramine as the pharmacological agent suggests that these treatments have mutually potentiating effects in this disorder.

Effects of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) on non-specific chronic back pain: a randomized controlled trial with additional exploration of the underlying mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Non-specific chronic back pain (CBP) is often accompanied by psychological trauma, but treatment for this associated condition is often insufficient.Nevertheless, despite the common co-occurrence of pain and psychological trauma, a specific trauma-focused approach for treating CBP has been neglected to date. Accordingly, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), originally developed as a treatment approach for posttraumatic stress disorders, is a promising approach for treating CBP in patients who have experienced psychological trauma. Thus, the aim of this study is to d
