[DOHaD: a disease-oriented, epoch-making, British-originated theory with Hungarian roots].

On the basis of comparative epidemiological statistical studies, the ’developmental origin of health and disease’ (DOHaD) theory was published in 1986, testifying the interrelation between certain perinatal events, like under- and overfeeding as well as infant mortality with cardiovascular lethality in adults (Barker DJ, Osmond C, Lancet, 1986; 137: 1077–1081) – and at present it is widely extended. The theory is rather similar to the hormonal imprinting concept, which had been published 6 years earlier (Csaba G, Biol Rev Cambr Philos Soc. 1980; 55: 47–63 and Horm Metab Res. 1984; 16: 329–335)

Developmental mechanisms underlying variation in craniofacial disease and evolution.

Craniofacial disease phenotypes exhibit significant variation in penetrance and severity. Although many genetic contributions to phenotypic variation have been identified, genotype-phenotype correlations remain imprecise. Recent work in evolutionary developmental biology has exposed intriguing developmental mechanisms that potentially explain incongruities in genotype-phenotype relationships. This review focuses on two observations from work in comparative and experimental animal model systems that highlight how development structures variation. First, multiple genetic inputs converge on relat

The people behind the papers - Ximena Gutiérrez Ramos and Leslie Pick.

Body segmentation is an essential process in development that occurs simultaneously in some insect species but sequentially in others. Whether these two modes of body segmentation are controlled by the same molecular mechanisms, however, is unclear. In a new study, Leslie Pick and colleagues establish the painted butterfly Vanessa cardui as an emerging model of sequential body segmentation and evaluate the level of evolutionary conservation of body segmentation genes from simultaneously segmenting Drosophila fruit flies, as well as other species. Development and Functional Organization of the Cranial Nerves in Lampreys.

Lampreys, together with hagfishes, are the only extant representatives of the oldest branch of vertebrates, the agnathans, which are the sister group of gnathostomes; therefore, studies on these animals are of great evolutionary significance. Lampreys exhibit a particular life cycle with remarkable changes in their behavior, concomitant, in part, with important modifications in the head and its musculature, which might influence the development of the cranial nerves. In this context, some cranial nerves such as the optic nerve and the ocular motor nerves, which develop slowly during an extreme

Development of the upper limb.

The advances of developmental biology are beginning to unravel the mechanisms behind congenital anomalies and should, in the not too distant future, have an impact upon their treatment. Much of classic developmental biology represents careful descriptions of the developing body form, in this case the upper limb. There is a great deal to be learned from this approach. More recent experimental manipulations of limb development are serving to establish the basic processes by which form is generated in each cycle of life. Such experimental manipulations might also be regarded as potential prototyp

DNV-TC: a developmental network vulnerability-based classification system for precision oncology.

INTRODUCTION: Current tumor classification systems based on histology and molecular subtypes inadequately capture the functional complexity of cancer biology. Tumors frequently reactivate embryonic developmental programs, becoming dependent on master regulators that govern pluripotency, differentiation and tissue morphogenesis. This developmental reactivation creates architectural vulnerabilities in gene regulatory networks that can be therapeutically exploited. METHODS: We propose DNV-TC, a four-dimensional classification system that stratifies tumors according to the reactivated development

Biology and Systematics of Echinococcus.

The biology of Echinococcus, the causative agent of echinococcosis (hydatid disease) is reviewed with emphasis on the developmental biology of the adult and metacestode stages of the parasite. Major advances include determining the origin, structure and functional activities of the laminated layer and its relationship with the germinal layer; and the isolation, in vitro establishment and characterization of the multipotential germinal cells. Future challenges are to identify the mechanisms that provide Echinococcus with its unique developmental plasticity and the nature of activities at the pa

The neural crest: a versatile organ system.

The neural crest is the name given to the strip of cells at the junction between neural and epidermal ectoderm in neurula-stage vertebrate embryos, which is later brought to the dorsal neural tube as the neural folds elevate. The neural crest is a heterogeneous and multipotent progenitor cell population whose cells undergo EMT then extensively and accurately migrate throughout the embryo. Neural crest cells contribute to nearly every organ system in the body, with derivatives of neuronal, glial, neuroendocrine, pigment, and also mesodermal lineages. This breadth of developmental capacity has l

A scenario-based approach to modeling development: a prototype model of C. elegans vulval fate specification.

Studies of developmental biology are often facilitated by diagram "models" that summarize the current understanding of underlying mechanisms. The increasing complexity of our understanding of development necessitates computational models that can extend these representations to include their dynamic behavior. Here we present a prototype model of Caenorhabditis elegans vulval precursor cell fate specification that represents many processes crucial for this developmental event but that are hard to integrate using other modeling methodologies. We demonstrate the integrative capabilities of our me

Cortical evolution and human behaviour.

All mammals have complex behaviours but these are generally stereotyped in nature and lack the flexibility of human behaviour. Can the flexibility of human behaviour be understood as an evolutionary extension of previous behaviours or is it a departure? Theories pertaining to this question have a long history including, now refuted, theories on neoteny. This paper, using an evolutionary developmental biology approach, outlines some existing theories and suggests some novel ideas. Previous trends during brain evolution are determined by outlining the phylogeny and ontogeny of the six layered ma

Arbiter of differentiation and death: Notch signaling meets apoptosis.

Notch-ligand interactions are a highly conserved mechanism that regulates cell fate decisions. Over the past few years, numerous observations have shown that this mechanism operates to regulate cell differentiation in an enormous variety of developmental and cell maturation processes. Recent studies indicate that in addition to cell differentiation, Notch signaling has direct effects on proliferation and programmed cell death. The picture emerging from these findings suggests that, depending on cellular and developmental context, Notch signaling may function as a general "arbiter" of cell fate

Developmental dynamics of catshark cranial neural crest cells provide insights into gnathostome facial evolution.

Cranial neural crest cells (CNCCs) are a vertebrate-specific, multipotent cell population central to facial morphogenesis and a cellular substrate for evolutionary change. Although core CNCC developmental programmes are deeply conserved, changes in their gene expression programmes and cell behaviour underlie both macroevolutionary transitions and microevolutionary adaptations. While CNCC biology has been well characterized in bony vertebrates, comparatively little is known about CNCC properties and the behaviour of their derivatives in cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes). To address this gap

A deep learning-enhanced surface acoustic wave platform for contact-free in situ biomechanical characterization of embryos.

Understanding the mechanical strength of embryos is essential for evaluating their viability in developmental biology. This study introduces a novel biosensor designed for in situ, non-contact mechanical characterization. The platform offers several unique contributions, including: (1) a microfluidic system combining SAW and deep learning for the automated quantification of embryonic mechanical strength; (2) a quantitative fitting model relating SAW power to acoustic radiation force for precise mechanical loading; (3) the first quantitative atlas of embryonic mechanical thresholds, achieved th

New insights into thyroid stem cells.

Stem cells exhibit an extraordinary ability for self-renewal. They also give rise to many specialized cells. The potential of stem cells in regenerative medicine, developmental biology, and drug discovery has been well documented. Although advances in stem cell science have raised broad ethical concerns, it is clear that stem cell technology has revolutionized our thinking in modern biology and medicine and provided the basis for understanding many of the mechanisms controlling basic biological processes and disease mechanisms. This review details the nascent field of thyroid stem cell researc

Evolution of regulatory networks: nematode vulva induction as an example of developmental systems drift.

Changes in the developmental processes and developmental mechanisms can result in the modification of morphological structures and in the evolution of phenotypic novelty. But how do developmental processes evolve? One striking finding in modern biology is the confrontation of morphological diversity in multicellular organisms with the conserved blueprint of life-the small number of conserved signaling pathways and transcriptional regulators. Evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo) tries to explain this discrepancy between macroscopic diversity and molecular uniformity. Selected case stud

The developmental genetics of biological robustness.

BACKGROUND: Living organisms are continuously confronted with perturbations, such as environmental changes that include fluctuations in temperature and nutrient availability, or genetic changes such as mutations. While some developmental systems are affected by such challenges and display variation in phenotypic traits, others continue consistently to produce invariable phenotypes despite perturbation. This ability of a living system to maintain an invariable phenotype in the face of perturbations is termed developmental robustness. Biological robustness is a phenomenon observed across phyla,

Postnatal Development of Prospective Beef Bulls: Integrating Nutrition, Metabolism, Endocrine Regulation, and Breeding Soundness.

Postnatal development in developing beef bulls is regulated through coordinated interactions among nutritional, metabolic, endocrine, and physiological processes that collectively determine structural maturation, reproductive competence, and breeding soundness. Optimizing these integrated regulatory mechanisms is essential for improving reproductive efficiency, accelerating genetic gain, and enhancing the sustainability of beef production systems. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the integrated regulation of postnatal development in developing beef bulls by combining evidence from
