Non-pharmacological management of problematic sleeping in children with developmental disabilities.

AIM: Sleep is important for underlying neural plasticity, and children with developmental disabilities suffer behavioural, emotional, cognitive, and sensory-motor issues that affect their wake and sleep states. Problematic sleeping can be hypothesized to have adverse effects on both of these areas in children with developmental disabilities. With this review, we aim to provide a benchmark in managing problematic sleeping in children with developmental disabilities. METHOD: A literature search was conducted and data on the study descriptives, patient characteristics, study design, study-relate

Menstrual and reproductive issues in adolescents with physical and developmental disabilities.

Most obstetrician-gynecologists will encounter adolescents with disabilities in their practice, because developmental and physical disabilities are common in young patients (8.4%). Reproductive health issues such as puberty, sexuality, and menstruation can be more complicated for teenagers with disabilities and their families as a result of concerns surrounding menstrual hygiene, abuse risk, vulnerability, changes in seizure pattern, and altered mood. Teenagers with disabilities have gynecologic health care needs similar to those of their peers as well as unique needs related to their physical

Fetal and infant spontaneous general movements as predictors of developmental disabilities.

The challenge of identifying infants who are at risk for developmental delay and possible adverse neurodevelopmental outcome demands methods of evaluation that will lead to early intervention to minimize developmental disability and to maximize the infant's potential. A qualitative assessment of spontaneous general movements (GMs) in the preterm, term, and young infant at risk is a valid and reliable tool for evaluation (Prechtl [1990] Early Hum. Dev. 23:151-158). The aim of this review is to describe the theoretical and clinical bases for the assessment of GMs and its relationship to developm

Sedation and analgesia in children with developmental disabilities and neurologic disorders.

Sedation and analgesia performed by the pediatrician and pediatric subspecialists are becoming increasingly common for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in children with developmental disabilities and neurologic disorders (autism, epilepsy, stroke, obstructive hydrocephalus, traumatic brain injury, intracranial hemorrhage, and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy). The overall objectives of this paper are (1) to provide an overview on recent studies that highlight the increased risk for respiratory complications following sedation and analgesia in children with developmental disabilities and neur

Behavioral interventions to reduce the pica of persons with developmental disabilities.

The consumption of nonfood items (i.e., pica) frequently occurs in persons with developmental disabilities. Pica may result in the puncture or blockage of the digestive tract, infestation by gastrointestinal parasites, and can interfere with an individual's daily learning, occupational performance, and quality of life. Twenty-six published studies have examined the efficacy of behavioral-intervention packages (e.g., differential reinforcement of other behavior, noncontingent attention, or overcorrection) on the pica of persons with developmental disabilities. This article reviews those studies

Neurobehavioral assessment of children and adolescents attending a developmental disabilities clinic.

Although the risk of the eventual development of tardive dyskinesia and other persistent adverse effects of neuroleptics is high, among adults with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities, neuroleptics may ameliorate dyskinesias, aggression, and inattention. The effects of traditional neuroleptics on a comparable population of children and adolescents with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities are unknown. The objective of this study was to develop an assessment battery to describe the effects of traditional neuroleptics on the behavior and movements of a smal

A biogenic amine-synapse mechanism for mental retardation and developmental disabilities.

Recent studies have demonstrated that biogenic amines have a function of facilitating formation and maintenance of synapses in diverse regions of the central nervous system in developing and adult animals. The normal number of synapses maintained by biogenic amines are crucial to acquire learning and memory. The level of biogenic amines was reported to decrease in the brain by several neurodevelopmental disorders associated with mental retardation and developmental disabilities such as Rett syndrome, autism and Down syndrome. Taken into consideration this fact together with the function of bio

A behavioral neurogenetics approach to developmental disabilities: gene-brain-behavior associations.

This review provides a discussion of behavioral neurogenetics' contribution to understanding neurodevelopmental pathways in learning and developmental disabilities. A brief overview is given of several common neurogenetic disorders with various genetic etiologies including Down syndrome, Turner syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, Angelman syndrome, and Tourette's syndrome. Special emphasis is placed on fragile X syndrome as representative of a newly-discovered class of genetic conditions characterized by an unstable trinucleotide repeat. A spectrum of cognitive, behavioral, and social-emotional p

Incidence of significantly altered pain experience among individuals with developmental disabilities.

Absence of basic pain behaviors when an injury or illness is typically painful suggests that the experience of pain may be significantly altered. In the present study third-party reporting of injury/illness incidents was used to estimate the incidence of pain insensitivity/indifference and provide evidence of its impact. A significantly elevated pain threshold was noted for 25.2% of 123 individuals with developmental disabilities. Those with more severe mental retardation were also more likely to display signs of pain insensitivity or indifference. These individuals risk avoidable death and in

Partner sensitivity to communication behavior of young children with developmental disabilities.

Aspects of partner sensitivity to communication behaviors of 24 presymbolic children with developmental disabilities were examined. The children were grouped according to their movement abilities (normal vs. abnormal patterns) and communication status (intentional vs. preintentional). Participating communication partners were those with whom the children interacted on a regular basis and included their mothers, early childhood special educators, and speech-language pathologists. Procedures were developed whereby the partners served as informants in order to provide information regarding (a) re

Developing an AIDS prevention education program for persons with developmental disabilities.

The AIDS epidemic poses a serious threat to people with developmental disabilities, the magnitude of which has not yet been fully realized by many professionals working with this population. Models for effective AIDS prevention education have been developed, however, within other populations. Key principles utilized in existing models were discussed and recommendations presented on how to adapt these models when designing programs for people who have developmental disabilities, most specifically, those in the mild/moderate range of mental retardation.

Sleep in Children With Developmental Disabilities: How Can Videosomnography Inform Intervention?

INTRODUCTION: Sleep problem treatments are commonly used by families raising children with developmental disabilities (DD). However, intervention targets often build exclusively on parent reports which can include inherent biases or missing information. To inform sleep intervention targets in this population, the present study explored using videosomnography-a video-based sleep assessment method. METHODS: This qualitative descriptive study observed nine school-aged children (M age = 10 years, majority African American boys) with DD for 7-consecutive nights. Videos captured sleep-wake behavior

Adapting suicide safety plans for youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

INTRODUCTION: Although risk for suicide appears elevated in individuals with intellectual and developmental disorders (I/DD), few interventions or tools addressing suicide prevention have been adapted for this population. Among evidence-based interventions for preventing suicide, safety planning interventions are an effective and commonly employed intervention for reducing suicide-related risk. METHODS: By drawing on Special Education praxis for supporting the learning needs of individuals with I/DD, we provide recommendations for adapting suicide safety planning interventions for youth with

Psychosocial development measures modification for adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Although diagnosis and identification of IDD is improving, adolescents with IDD receive limited attention in research, particularly concerning their psychosocial development. Measures developed and normed with typically developing populations may not be appropriate for IDD populations and may result in biased assessment. AIM: This study aimed to develop and validate modified psychosocial development assessments for adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), addressing the absence of such assessments. METHOD: It involved two phases: modifying existing inst

The Use of Psychotropic Medication in Iranian Children with Developmental Disabilities.

The use of psychotropic medication in children is increasing worldwide. Children with developmental disabilities seem to be prescribed these medications at a higher rate compared to their non-disabled peers. Little is known about prescribing in non-Western, middle-income studies. In Iran, the file records of 1133 children, aged 2 to 17 years, assessed as having autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or an intellectual disability (ID) in Tehran City and Province from 2005 to 2019 were collated, and information from parental reports of medications was extracted. Upwards of 80% of children with ASD and 5

Total energy expenditure and body composition of children with developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Obesity prevalence is increased in children with developmental disabilities, specifically in children with spina bifida and Down syndrome. Energy expenditure, a critical aspect of weight management, has been extensively studied in the typically developing population, but not adequately studied in children with developmental disabilities. OBJECTIVE: Determine energy expenditure, fat-free mass and body fat percentile and the impact of these findings on recommended caloric intake in children with spina bifida and Down syndrome. METHODS/MEASURES: This pilot study included 36 children
