The role of statins in diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetes mellitus is a growing global public health issue estimated to affect around 600 million people by 2040 [1]. It occurs in populations throughout the world, is increasing in both the developing world and high-income countries and also affects young, working-age people. Ocular involvement in diabetes occurs early in the disease and is present in over a third of diabetes mellitus Type 2 patients at the time of diagnosis. Blindness due to diabetic retinopathy (DR) remains a leading cause of adult-onset blindness, [1] which results from disruption of retinal vasculature, ischemia and its co

Ocular surface temperature measurement in diabetic retinopathy.

Infrared thermography provides functional imaging by picturing the temperature pattern of the region imaged. The temperature correlates to the blood flow pattern and is used in the diagnosis of diseases like breast cancer, peripheral vascular disorders, diabetic neuropathy and fever screening. In the present study, the usage of ocular thermography for diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy is explored. Ocular thermograms using infrared imaging camera were obtained for normal subjects (80 volunteers - 40 males and 40 females) age groups 21-30, 31-40, 41-50 and 51-60 years, non-proliferative diabetic

Association Between Diabetes, Diabetic Retinopathy, and Glaucoma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The strength of the relationship between diabetes, diabetic retinopathy (DR), and glaucoma remains controversial. We review evidence supporting and refuting this association and explore mechanistic pathological and treatment relationships linking these diseases. RECENT FINDINGS: While studies have shown diabetes/DR may increase the risk for glaucoma, this remains inconsistently demonstrated. Diabetes/DR may contribute toward glaucomatous optic neuropathy indirectly (either by increasing intraocular pressure or vasculopathy) or through direct damage to the optic nerve. Howev

The Role of Inflammation in Diabetic Retinopathy.

Inflammation is central to pathogenic processes in diabetes mellitus and the metabolic syndrome and particularly implicates innate immunity in the development of complications. Inflammation is a primary event in Type 1 diabetes where infectious (viral) and/or autoimmune processes initiate disease; in contrast, chronic inflammation is typical in Type 2 diabetes and is considered a sequel to increasing insulin resistance and disturbed glucose metabolism. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is perceived as a vascular and neurodegenerative disease which occurs after some years of poorly controlled diabetes.

Inflammatory and angiogenic biomarkers in diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most common microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus (DM) and a leading cause of blindness in working-age adults in developed countries. Numerous investigations have recognised inflammation and angiogenesis as important factors in the development of this complication of diabetes. Current methods of DR treatment are predominantly used at advanced stages of the disease and could be associated with serious side effects. Therefore, new diagnostic methods are needed in order to identify the initial stages of DR as well as monitoring the effects of app

[Clinical features of diabetic retinopathy in pregnancy].

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy is a risk factor for progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR). Despite the common opinion about the regression of DR after childbirth, it is possible for the disease to progress aggressively, which can cause loss of visual functions when treated untimely. PURPOSE: To present clinical cases with different course of development of DR in pregnant women with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five pregnant women with DM1 lasting more than 8 years were examined. Glycemic level of all patients was higher than normal (glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) of more th

Correlates of diabetic retinopathy: A case study.

Prevalence of diabetes mellitus is increasing worldwide particularly in developing countries as according to International Diabetes Federation, globally a rise from 451 million diabetic people in 2017 to 693 million in 2045 is expected. Diabetic retinopathy is one of the major consequences of diabetes mellitus, so knowing its risk factors can be very helpful. For identifying the risk factors of the Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) in Faisalabad and to determine whether DR is more caused by type 1 or type 2 diabetes, a cross-sectional study was conducted at major hospitals in Faisalabad district durin

Nutraceuticals for the Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most common complications of diabetes mellitus and is characterized by degeneration of retinal neurons and neoangiogenesis, causing a severe threat to vision. Nowadays, the principal treatment options for DR are laser photocoagulation, vitreoretinal surgery, or intravitreal injection of drugs targeting vascular endothelial growth factor. However, these treatments only act at advanced stages of DR, have short term efficacy, and cause side effects. Treatment with nutraceuticals (foods providing medical or health benefits) at early stages of DR may represen

Metanx and early stages of diabetic retinopathy.

PURPOSE: l-Methylfolate, pyridoxal 5'-phosphate, and methylcobalamin, individually have been reported to have beneficial effects on diabetes-induced defects. The possibility that combining these therapeutic approaches might have additional benefit led us to investigate the effect of Metanx against development of early stages of diabetic retinopathy in a mouse model. METHODS: C57BL/6J mice were made diabetic with streptozotocin, and some were given Metanx (a combination food product) mixed in the food at a dose of 5 mg/kg of body weight. Mice were killed at 2 months and 10 months of study for

Proliferative diabetic retinopathy in typical retinitis pigmentosa.

A 39-year-old woman with typical retinitis pigmentosa (RP) for 9 years and a positive family history of night blindness was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus (DM). She developed proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) during the course of disease. She was promptly managed with pan retinal photocoagulation (PRP). PDR developing in a case of typical RP is extremely rare and has not been reported in the literature to date. Recognition of this rare, vision threatening complication, points out a definite need to further look deep into the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy.

Retinylamine Benefits Early Diabetic Retinopathy in Mice.

Recent evidence suggests an important role for outer retinal cells in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy (DR). Here we investigated the effect of the visual cycle inhibitor retinylamine (Ret-NH2) on the development of early DR lesions. Wild-type (WT) C57BL/6J mice (male, 2 months old when diabetes was induced) were made diabetic with streptozotocin, and some were given Ret-NH2 once per week. Lecithin-retinol acyltransferase (LRAT)-deficient mice and P23H mutant mice were similarly studied. Mice were euthanized after 2 (WT and Lrat(-/-)) and 8 months (WT) of study to assess vascular histo

Aldose reductase / polyol inhibitors for diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic retinopathy is the most common microvascular complication of diabetes and the most severe of diabetic ocular complications. This review describes retinal changes at different stages of diabetic retinopathy and risk factors associated with this devastating disease. Special attention is focused on aldose reductase, the first enzyme of the sorbitol pathway of glucose metabolism. The current knowledge on the enzyme localization in the retina, and the role for increased aldose reductase activity in retinal capillary cell loss and formation of acellular capillaries, capillary basement membr

Pericytes and the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy.

Pericytes provide vascular stability and control endothelial proliferation. Pericyte loss, microaneurysms, and acellular capillaries are characteristic for the diabetic retina. Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-B is involved in pericyte recruitment, and brain capillaries of mice with a genetic ablation of PDGF-B show pericyte loss and microaneurysms. We investigated the role of capillary coverage with pericytes in early diabetic retinopathy and the contribution to proliferative retinopathy using mice with a single functional allele of PDGF-B (PDGF-B(+/-) mice). As assessed by quantitative

Aspirin in diabetic retinopathy. A systematic review.

Diabetes mellitus is a risk factor for eye disease that can lead to blindness. There have been both concerns that aspirin use might worsen diabetic retinopathy, as well as hopes that aspirin might be beneficial in treating it. We investigated whether there are beneficial effects of aspirin alone and in combination with other antiplatelet agents in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy, and the relative hazards for the development of high-risk proliferative retinopathy following aspirin treatment. We conducted a sensitive search for randomized controlled trials combined with index terms for ide

Diabetic retinopathy after combined kidney-pancreas transplantation.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is amenable to good diabetic control; however, only successful pancreas transplantation can achieve sustained normoglycaemia. The aim of this long-term study was to examine the course of DR in insulin-dependent diabetic recipients of a simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplant (SPK). Successful SPK recipients (n = 46) and failed pancreas transplant with a functioning kidney transplant (n = 8) were assessed by baseline and regular post-transplant ophthalmic examinations (n = 432) for up to 10 yr after SPK. At the time of SPK (n = 108 eyes), the mean duration of diabe

[Progression of diabetic retinopathy after cataract extraction].

A prospective study of the effect of cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation on the course of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in 44 patients (59 eyes) was carried out. It showed that in the 1-3 years following surgery, there was progression of DR (including development of newly formed retinopathy) in 35% of the patients (28.8% of eyes). Progression was more marked in patients with pre-operative bilateral DR compared to those without bilateral DR (77% and 16% respectively). Insulin dependence did not play a role in progression. Final visual acuity was better in patients without pre-ope

BACKGROUND: The importance and indication of panretinal photocoagulation in proliferative diabetic retinopathy is well established. In contrast the indication of cryotherapy in this disease is more controversial especially in regard of new indications for early vitrectomy. The present study was performed to characterize the clinical possibilities and limitations of cryotherapy in complicated proliferative diabetic retinopathy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In 231 patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy and vitreous hemorrhage limiting further photocoagulation the visual outcome and diabetic

Retinal breaks in diabetic retinopathy: vitreoretinal relationships.

We retrospectively reviewed the eyes of 143 patients with tractional retinal detachment caused by diabetes that had been studied biomicroscopically, and, after some exclusions, divided them into two groups: those with retinal breaks (group 1) (16 patients, 16 eyes), and those without retinal breaks (group 2) (127 patients, 161 eyes). The group 1 eyes were further divided into three subgroups: those with retinal tears from limited anteroposterior vitreous traction (subgroup A), those with macular holes in an area without posterior vitreous detachment (subgroup B), and those with oval retinal ho
