Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition commonly affecting infants with notable sparing of the diaper region. Though sources anecdotally attribute this sparing to the physical barrier formed by the diaper and the subsequent retention of moisture, urine, sweat and feces, no studies have formally investigated the factors contributing to this sparing phenomenon. We performed a scoping literature review to investigate the factors involved in sparing of AD in the diaper region, namely humidity, scratching, urine, sweat, feces, and microbiome composition. A total of 130 pape

Diaper area dermatitis is one of the most frequent dermatosis in infants. Knowledge of clinics, but specially of the management of this entity is important, since references to this respect are not up-to-date in spite of the importance of this disease. Newborns adn infants present this condition, due to the fact that vesical and anal sphincters are still beyond control and because the diaper is one of the most important clothing articles in babies and often in preschool or schoolage children complaining of some related pathological condition.

Diaper rash is a common infant malady. This study documents the earliest stages of rash in a cohort of 31 healthy term newborns over the first 28 days of life. The diaper area was evaluated using a standardized diaper rash grading scale. The anal, buttock, genital, intertriginous, waistband, and leg areas were assessed separately. At birth the average grade was 0.1 and none of the infants had specific features of advanced rash. Nineteen percent had dryness and/or slight redness. By day 7, 71% of infants had some features of skin compromise, giving rise to an overall grade of 0.6. Both the freq

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Diaper dermatitis is often caused by irritant contact occurring beneath the diaper of an infant, and it is aggravated by factors such as dampness, friction, urea, and feces. Food-allergic patients are known to exhibit various skin lesions ranging from urticaria to eczema. This study aims to determine the relationship between persistent diaper dermatitis and food allergy.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted of pediatric patients with a diagnosis of persistent diaper dermatitis between August 2015 and November 2017.
RESULTS: The study included 157 patient

We report an infant with exogenous Cushing syndrome after being treated for 2 months with a potent topical corticosteroid via the mother's application of topical clobetasol for diaper rash without a prescription. We emphasize that potent topical steroids should be used with great caution, especially when used under occlusion (e.g., diaper area) and that parents should be warned about potential side effects of these medications, particularly when used in infants.

Diaper (napkin) dermatitis is an acutely presenting inflammatory irritant contact dermatitis of the diaper region. It is one of the most common dermatologic diseases in infants and children. In the past, the disease was thought to be caused by ammonia; however, a number of factors, such as friction, wetness, inappropriate skin care, microorganisms, antibiotics, and nutritional defects, are important. Diaper dermatitis commonly affects the lower parts of the abdomen, thighs, and diaper area. Involvement of skin fold regions is typical with diaper dermatitis. At the early stages of the disease,

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Excessive skin hydration from occlusive coverings such as absorbent articles, bandages, etc. has been known to compromise the skin's barrier properties. Damage to the stratum corneum occurs from prolonged exposure to wetness and limited product breathability, which reduces evaporation. Protection from wetness may be imparted by barrier materials, such as lotions and ointments on the skin. Barrier materials are traditionally applied by hand from bulk containers (bottle or tube). In recent years, diapers have been made that contain barrier ointments designed to transfer to th

Multiple skin sites and the gastrointestinal tract of 57 infants with otitis media were cultured quantitatively for Candida albicans before and after antibiotic therapy. Ten days of systemic therapy with amoxicillin was associated with a twofold increase in the recovery of C. albicans from the rectum and skin. Infants who developed diaper dermatitis had a significant increase in the number of C. albicans organisms recovered from these sites. We conclude that the use of amoxicillin increases the risk for developing diaper dermatitis.

Diaper rash, mainly occurring as erythema and itching in the diaper area, causes considerable distress to infants and toddlers. Increasing evidence suggests that an unequal distribution of microorganisms on the skin contributes to the development of diaper dermatitis. Probiotic bacteria, like Staphylococcus epidermidis, are crucial for maintaining a healthy balance in the skin's microbiome, among others, through their fermentative metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids. Using a defined prebiotic as a carbon source (e.g., as part of the diaper formulation) can selectively trigger the ferm

BACKGROUND: Diaper insecurity, unmet need for infant/child diapers, is a form of material deprivation associated with worse maternal mental health, including higher levels of stress, anxiety, and depression.
OBJECTIVES: To examine retrospective reports of mothers' experiences of diaper insecurity and coping strategies as they related to maternal physical and mental health, health behaviors, and social interaction.
DESIGN: This study used semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 70 mothers who lacked enough diapers. A thematic analysis using abductive coding was conducted to identify related

BACKGROUND: While most common diaper-related conditions are easily resolved, the diaper region may be the site of a variety of tumors (either benign or malignant) and other abnormalities that may require completely unique treatment approaches.
OBJECTIVES: This review sought to catalogue the various conditions and complications that may arise in the diaper area during the first few years of life.
METHODS: To identify studies included in this review, computerized searches were undertaken in the PubMed and Medline databases using the term tumors of the diaper region with the following terms: tu

Haloprogin cream was applied four times a day for one week over the diaper area of eight infants affected by diaper dermatitis. All patients experienced complete clearing. Candida albicans was isolated from seven patients prior to treatment but failed to grow in cultures obtained after completion of the treatment.

An infant had a persistent ulcerative nodular diaper dermatitis with negative laboratory findings for pathogens. With bland therapy and avoidance of powdering, the lesions cleared. This reaction was considered, without proof, to be granuloma gluteale infantum. This condition should be considered in the differential diagnosis of the various types of diaper dermatitis. This reaction may also occur in the incontinent elderly.

Mucocutaneous infection with Candida in neonates ranges from such common conditions as thrush and diaper dermatitis to serious diseases with potential for systemic involvement, including congenital candidiasis and invasive fungal dermatitis. In premature infants, seemingly benign mucocutaneous involvement may precede systemic infection and thus warrants thoughtful attention. Skin involvement also may be seen as an expression of systemic disease. The physical appearance of these lesions is often characteristic, allowing easy diagnosis. The patients at risk differ by gestational age and postnata

UNLABELLED: The diaper environment increases the coefficient of skin friction and compromises the function of the stratum corneum. In this study, the tribological and mycological benefit of the use of a miconazole nitrate-containing paste on diapered skin was evaluated. A total of 135 instrumental measurements of both erythema and stratum corneum alterations were made on alternate days for 3 weeks in 15 infants. Biometrological parameters were the chromacity a* of the skin and the squamometry index. Cultures testing for Candida albicans were also performed. In the days following the use of the

Dampness, maceration, fecal enzymes, chemicals, and other irritants lead to diaper dermatitis in infants. Most cases can be cleared with frequent diaper changes, use of superabsorbent disposable diapers (which contain gelling material in their core), and a low-potency topical corticosteroid. If the eruption lasts for more than 3 days or classic erythematous satellite lesions are present, addition of an antifungal agent should help resolve the condition. Recalcitrant or clinically atypical eruptions may signify rarer disorders, such as psoriasis, Langerhans' cell histiocytosis, Leiner's disease

OBJECTIVE: Many indications justifiably drive the pediatrician to request a urine sample in order to assess the health status of the incontinent baby or infant. Urine collection by means of an adhesive perineal bag is the most widely used in children who do not control urine emission, despite its inaccurate reflection of bacteriuria. We suggest a novel technique to immediately visualize the micturition event upon occurrence, in attempt to shorten waiting times and exhausting checking and rechecking opaque diapers in order to determine whether the desired sample has finally been delivered.

Diaper dermatitis (DD) is one of the most common skin conditions that infants suffer from and their caregivers manage in the first months post-birth. As such, questions of effective prevention and treatment of the condition often arise. Nonmedical skincare practices that support healthy skin barrier function can prevent DD manifestation or alleviate the condition in many cases. The usage of barrier emollients and improved diaper technology contributes to keeping moisture and irritants away from an infant's delicate skin. This paper addresses facts behind commonly asked questions from caregiver
