OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe a new double purse-string suturing plication method that was developed to minimize difficulties experienced in thoracoscopic plication in pediatric patients.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of patients that underwent diaphragmatic eventration repair with new technique developed in our clinic. In this technique, we perform diaphragm plication with continuous double layer purse-string suturing. A third suturing may be necessary in case of wide eventrations. Thoracic drainage catheter is inserted into the thorax on a routine basis.

OBJECTIVE: Diaphragmatic eventration (DE) is a rare condition that can mimic a traumatic diaphragmatic hernia, particularly in trauma cases. We present a case of DE initially misdiagnosed as a diaphragmatic hernia following a road traffic accident, highlighting diagnostic challenges and surgical management.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old man presented to the hospital after a road traffic accident with chest discomfort and decreased air entry on the left side. Chest X-ray revealed a left paracardiac opacity. Contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) of the thorax suggested a central diaphragmatic defect w

PURPOSE: There is no data comparing different surgical techniques for diaphragmatic re-positioning for hemi-diaphragmatic eventration in adults. Our aim was to verify the potential pros and cons of two major surgical techniques in symptomatic eventration patients.
METHODS: Patients undergoing thoracotomy for diaphragmatic elevation repair either by un-opened (accordion placation) or by opened (double-breasted placation) diaphragmatic technique between January 2007 and August 2013 were analyzed retrospectively, and compared in terms of operative outcomes on 12th and 24th months.

Diaphragmatic eventration (DE) denotes abnormal elevation of the diaphragm due to paralysis, hypoplasia, or atrophy and is classed as either congenital or acquired. In this report, one case involved a patient with congenital localized DE who developed persistent symptoms such as cough, sputum production, chest tightness, and shortness of breath after infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Imaging studies ultimately revealed progression to complete DE. The patient underwent surgical intervention and recovered well postoperatively. The other case involved a

Liver radiotracer activity interfering with the inferior myocardial wall in a patient undergoing myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) with 99mTc-Sestamibi is a known pitfall. We report a patient with pituitary macroadenoma who was subjected to stress-MPI study for pre-anesthetic clearance. The post-stress raw image showed the liver radiotracer activity in close approximation to the anteroseptal wall of the left ventricular myocardium, secondary to right hemi-diaphragmatic eventration.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether or not the presence of pleural and/or pericardial effusion can be used prenatally as an ultrasonographic marker for the differential diagnosis between diaphragmatic eventration and diaphragmatic hernia.
METHODS: We present two case reports of non-isolated diaphragmatic eventration associated with pleural and/or pericardial effusion. Additionally, we reviewed the literature for all cases of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) and diaphragmatic eventration that met the following criteria: (1) prenatal diagnosis of a diaphragmatic defect and (2) definitive diag

Congenital diaphragmatic eventration (CDE) is a rare pathology characterized by elevation of the hemidiaphragm resulting from abnormal development of diaphragmatic musculature. Its clinical and radiographic presentation can closely mimic more common and more immediately dangerous neonatal conditions. Although the reported laterality of CDE varies among published series, we present a male neonate with respiratory distress initially suspected to have congenital pneumonia or sepsis who was subsequently diagnosed with right-sided CDE. Diagnosis was established after escalation of imaging technique

Background: Thoracoscopic diaphragmatic plication has gained popularity in the treatment of congenital diaphragmatic eventration (CDE), but the therapeutic effect and prognosis have rarely been compared with nonendoscopic surgery. Materials and Methods: The medical records of 77 children who had received treatment for CDE in our institution from September 2006 to January 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. According to the repair approach, the children were divided into a thoracoscopic plication group and a modified small incision plication group. The perioperative characteristics and follow-u

UNLABELLED: Diaphragm eventration could inhibit the lung development due to compression. Thus diaphragm plication is required for the diaphragm eventration to prevent lung compression causing lung immaturity. However, we sometimes encounter the difficulty in endoscopic plication for fragile diaphragm without damaging it in narrow thoracic space in children. We demonstrate the plication using no-knife automatic suturing device.
METHOD: Two linear ridges are made using stapler on the flaccid diaphragm without cutting the tissue. Then the created 2 ridges are sutured so that the diaphragm is pli

The triad of gastric volvulus (GV), wandering spleen (WS), and diaphragmatic eventration (DE) is extremely uncommon and only two cases have been reported in the current pediatric literature. In this paper, we aim to describe the diagnostic and surgical management of a 5-month-old baby with this pathological triad and to present the other cases reported in pediatric literature. A 5-month-old baby was referred to our hospital because of vomiting and inconsolable crying from 12 h. The X-ray study demonstrated a severely distended stomach and a left diaphragmatic elevation. Swallow fluoroscopy rev

Congenital diaphragmatic eventration (CDE) and congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) with or without hernia sac are three different types of congenital diaphragmatic malformations, which this study evaluates. All surgically treated patients with CDE or Bochdalek type CDH between 2000 and 2016 were included in this retrospective analysis. Demographics, CDH-characteristics, treatment, and clinical outcome were evaluated. In total, 200 patients were included. Patients with an eventration or hernia sac had no significant differences and were compared as patients without a true defect to patients w

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Chilaiditi's syndrome, characterized by the abnormal positioning of the intestine between the diaphragm and liver, and diaphragmatic eventration, a condition marked by the permanent elevation of one side of the diaphragm, are both exceedingly uncommon medical conditions. Their co-occurrence is even rarer, with only a handful of documented cases in medical literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old male patient initially presented with shortness of breath and was subsequently diagnosed with both Chilaiditi's syndrome and diaphragmatic eventration. His medical his

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant condition with a high rate of new mutation and variable expression. Diffuse neurofibroma of the epidermis invading deeper organs is rare.We report a case of diffuse subcutaneous neurofibroma in the thoracoabdominal wall which had invaded the diaphragm and caused diaphragmatic eventration.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a patient with diffuse neurofibroma of the chest and abdomen who was admitted to the hospital due to sudden abdominal pain and a possible diaphragmatic hernia. We performed thoracotomy and found that the neurof

PURPOSE: Existing minimal-access surgical approaches for correction of symptomatic diaphragmatic eventration may be technically difficult in neonates and infants. We report technical details and initial outcomes of a novel, simple thoracoscopic repair technique.
METHODS: The technique uses one 3-mm camera port, a 3-mm instrument incision without a port, and an 18-gauge spinal needle, which is passed through the chest wall into the pleural space. The excess diaphragm is first plicated over the needle, after which a non-absorbable suture is passed through the needle and tied extracorporeally. T
