The influence of high-fat, high-sugar diet and bariatric surgery on HSP70 and HSP90 plasma and liver concentrations in diet-induced obese rats.

Metabolic surgery ameliorates insulin resistance and is associated with long-term, effective weight loss, but the mechanisms involved remain unknown. Here, the duodenal-jejunal omega switch (DJOS) surgery in combination with high-fat, high-carbohydrate diet was performed on diet obese rats and joint effects of bariatric surgery and different dietary patterns on heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and HSP90 plasma and liver concentrations were measured. We found that plasma and liver levels of HSP70 were lower after DJOS surgery in comparison to the control in the groups of animals kept on control di

Dietary intake in cystic fibrosis and its role in glucose metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Dietary intervention in cystic fibrosis (CF) has historically focused on high-energy diets to address malnutrition, with little attention on diet quality. With increased survival, CF complications such as impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and cystic fibrosis related diabetes (CFRD) have increased in prevalence. In the absence of consensus on the management of IGT, the role of dietary intake, specifically carbohydrate quality, requires consideration. AIMS: The aims of this study were to: 1) determine nutritional quality of dietary intake at an adult CF clinic and compare this to the

The fecal microbiota of healthy dogs fed extruded and raw meat-based diets.

Conventional dog diets, such as extruded diets, remain common. The popularity of unconventional options, particularly raw diets, has increased over time and may differentially influence the gut microbiota. Raw diets inherently harbor higher bacterial loads, including potentially pathogenic microorganisms, raising concerns from a One Health perspective due to the close interaction among pets, humans, and the environment. The study aims were to characterize the nutritional profiles of extruded and raw diets, compare the fecal microbial composition of dogs fed extruded diets with that of dogs fed

Preoperative carbohydrate loading reduces length of stay after major elective, non-cardiac surgery when compared to fasting: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Preoperative fasting is a worldwide routine even though the most recent Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Guidelines recommend preoperative carbohydrate loading instead of fasting, but with low quality of evidence. Our aim was to compare the effects of preoperative carbohydrate loading to fasting and placebo in patients undergoing elective major non-cardiac surgery under general anaesthesia. Our systematic search was conducted on 15th of October 2021 in five databases, Medline, Embase, Central, Web of Science and Scopus, and updated on November 12th, 2024. We included randomized controlle

Dietary Insulin Index and Insulin Load in Relation to Breast Cancer: Findings from a Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: No data are available on the association between dietary insulin index (DII) and dietary insulin load (DIL) and the risk of breast cancer (BC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: This hospital-based case-control study enrolled 150 newly diagnosed cases of BC and 150 age-matched controls. All cases were patients with pathologically confirmed BC, with no history of any type of other pathologically confirmed cancers. Controls were selected from visitors, relatives, and friends of non-cancer patients in other wards who had no family relationships with the cases. We assessed the dietary intakes of

Associations of periconception dietary glycemic index and load with fertility in women and men: a study among couples in the general population.

BACKGROUND: The dietary glycemic index (GI) and load (GL) reflect carbohydrate quality and quantity, potentially impacting fertility through modulation of insulin sensitivity and generation of oxidative stress. While fertility is influenced by both women and men, reproductive research often emphasizes maternal factors. We first examined periconception dietary intake in both women and male partners, and subsequent associations of dietary GI and GL with fecundability and subfertility. METHODS: Among 830 women and 651 male partners, participating in a population-based prospective cohort study fr

Association of Dietary Intake with Interoception and Gastric Myoelectric Activity in Women with Binge Eating Disorder and Bulimia Nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Women with binge eating disorder (BED) and bulimia nervosa (BN) usually consume high-calorie meals with variable macro- and micronutrient compositions and have a disturbed perception of gastric fullness. The association of dietary intake with gastric interoception and gastric myoelectric activity (GMA) is poorly studied. This study examined the link between GMA/interoception and dietary intake in women with eating disorders (ED) compared to age/body mass index (BMI)-matched controls. METHODS: A total of 18 women diagnosed with BED (n = 9) or BN (n = 9) and 18 age/BMI-matched contr

Can a modified ketogenic diet be a nutritional strategy for patients with McArdle disease? Results from a randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study.

BACKGROUND: McArdle disease is caused by myophosphorylase deficiency leading to blocked glycogenolysis in skeletal muscle. Consequently, individuals with McArdle disease have intolerance to physical activity, muscle fatigue, and pain. These symptoms vary according to the availability of alternative fuels for muscle contraction. In theory, a modified ketogenic diet (mKD) can provide alternative fuels in the form of ketone bodies and potentially boost fat oxidation. METHODS: This randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study aimed to investigate if a mKD improves exercise capac

The effect of perioperative oral carbohydrate loading on postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing orthopedic surgeries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Oral carbohydrate loading is a core element used in Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) protocols and has shown benefits in several surgical fields. However, evidence in orthopedic surgery is mixed. This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials aims to evaluate the impact of preoperative oral carbohydrate loading on postoperative outcomes in orthopedic surgery patients. METHOD: Studies comparing preoperative oral carbohydrate loading versus fasting in orthopedic surgery measuring outcomes of hospital stay, pain, nausea, vomiting, or thirst were sear

Superior gallstone dissolubility and safety of tert-amyl ethyl ether over methyl-tertiary butyl ether.

BACKGROUND: The use of methyl-tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) to dissolve gallstones has been limited due to concerns over its toxicity and the widespread recognition of the safety of laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The adverse effects of MTBE are largely attributed to its low boiling point, resulting in a tendency to evaporate. Therefore, if there is a material with a higher boiling point and similar or higher dissolubility than MTBE, it is expected to be an attractive alternative to MTBE. AIM: To determine whether tert-amyl ethyl ether (TAEE), an MTBE analogue with a relatively higher boiling poi

How Sweet Is This? A Review and Evaluation of Preoperative Carbohydrate Loading in the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Model.

Preoperative carbohydrate loading is a contemporary element of the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) paradigm. In addition to intraoperative surgical and anesthetic modifications and postoperative care practices, preoperative optimization is essential to good postsurgical outcomes. What was long held as dogma, a period of prolonged fasting prior to the administration of anesthesia, was later re-examined and challenged. Along with the proposed physiologic effects of decreasing the surgical stress response and insulin resistance, preoperative carbohydrate loading was also demonstrated to im

Regulation of hepatic glucose uptake and storage in vivo.

In the postprandial state, the liver takes up and stores glucose to minimize the fluctuation of glycemia. Elevated insulin concentrations, an increase in the load of glucose reaching the liver, and the oral/enteral/portal vein route of glucose delivery (compared with the peripheral intravenous route) are factors that increase the rate of net hepatic glucose uptake (NHGU). The entry of glucose into the portal vein stimulates a portal glucose signal that not only enhances NHGU but concomitantly reduces muscle glucose uptake to ensure appropriate partitioning of a glucose load. This coordinated r

Autologous subcutaneous adipose tissue transplants improve adipose tissue metabolism and reduce insulin resistance and fatty liver in diet-induced obesity rats.

Long-term dietary and pharmacological treatments for obesity have been questioned, particularly in individuals with severe obesity, so a new approach may involve adipose tissue transplants, particularly autologous transplants. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the metabolic effects of autologous subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) transplants into two specific intraabdominal cavity sites (omental and retroperitoneal) after 90 days. The study was performed using two different diet-induced obesity (DIO) rat models: one using a high-fat diet (HFD) and the other using a high-carbohydrate d

Gastric volume rather than nutrient content inhibits food intake.

To evaluate the separate contributions of distension and nutrient stimulation of the stomach to the inhibition of short-term food intake and, particularly, to reassess previous analyses based on the inflatable gastrointestinal cuff, four experiments were performed. Rats equipped with pyloric cuffs and indwelling gastric catheters consumed a liquid diet ad libitum. Their consumption during short-term (30 min) feeding bout was measured after gastric infusions on cuff-open and cuff-closed trials. Animals taking meals (approximately 5 ml) with cuffs closed immediately after receiving intragastric

The Bioprotective Effects of Marigold Tea Polyphenols on Obesity and Oxidative Stress Biomarkers in High-Fat-Sugar Diet-Fed Rats.

Background: The research is aimed at exploring the potential of marigold petal tea (MPT), rich in polyphenol contents, against oxidative stress and obesity in a rat model following a high-fat-sugar diet (HFSD). Methods: The MPT was prepared through the customary method of decoction and was subjected to analysis for its polyphenol composition using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). Two specific doses of MPT, namely, 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight (BW), were chosen for the study-referred to as MPT-250 and MPT-500, respectively. Result: The main phenolic acids and fl

Perioperative Interventions Based on Fasting Protocols and Carbohydrate Loading in Non-Cardiac Surgery in Older Adults: A Scoping Review.

Background and Objectives: Postoperative delirium and postoperative cognitive dysfunction are common complications in older adults undergoing elective non-cardiac surgery, associated with increased morbidity and mortality, functional decline, and prolonged hospital stay. Prolonged preoperative fasting may intensify inflammatory responses and insulin resistance. Preoperative oral carbohydrate loading within ERAS protocols may modulate this response and reduce cognitive risk. Materials and Methods: A scoping review was conducted following the methodological recommendations of Arksey and O'Malley

Respiratory hydrogen secretion: a simple test of bowel adaptation in infants with short gut syndrome.

The prime goal in the management of infants with short gut syndrome is the smooth transition from total parenteral alimentation to total gastrointestinal alimentation. Such transition is dependent upon early feeding to actively promote the intestinal mucosal hyperplasia that is the key to eventual oral alimentation. A modular hyposmolar formula was previously reported to be successful in promoting the intestinal adaptation in several infants with short gut syndrome. Progression of the daily diet was dependent upon the day's clinical response, i.e., whether a change in volume or substrate compo

Practical significance and assessment of gastric ultrasound in preoperative carbohydrate loading: A retrospective analysis of 746 patients within the enhanced recovery after surgery pathway.

BACKGROUND: Although preoperative carbohydrate loading (PCL) is generally regarded as safe, the significance of assessing gastric status by gastric ultrasound after PCL application has not been adequately explored in real-world clinical settings. Therefore, this study evaluated gastric status after PCL using gastric ultrasound and its potential role in enhancing patient safety within a large surgical cohort under Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients who received PCL and underwent hepatobiliary surgery within ERAS protocol between Nove

Glycerol turnover and kinetics of exogenous fat in surgical patients.

In the United States, glucose has been until recently the sole non-protein energy substrate utilized in total parenteral nutrition (TPN). However, recent reports show that the administration of massive glucose loads to surgical patients cause a high incidence of pulmonary and hepatic complications. Indirect calorimetry data indicate that these hypermetabolic patients seem to utilize endogenous fat preferentially to carbohydrate. Therefore, we have undertaken some studies on the metabolism of endogenous and exogenous fat. Peripheral lipolysis - as estimated by measurements of glycerol turnover
