Intractable Seizures in Children With Type 1 Diabetes: Implications of the Ketogenic Diet.

INTRODUCTION: The ketogenic diet is prescribed for seizures in some children with epilepsy. Children with type 1 diabetes are at risk for diabetic ketoacidosis caused by ketosis due to decreased insulin effect. Currently there are no clinical guidelines regarding the safety and efficacy of the ketogenic diet in patients with concurrent epilepsy and type 1 diabetes. OBJECTIVES: This review examines the current literature regarding the association between TID and epilepsy, proposed mechanisms for the observed relationship, risks and benefits of the ketogenic diet, and clinical applications of t

Carbohydrate-restricted diets and Type 1 diabetes mellitus: research considerations.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is managed via careful control of blood glucose, exogenous insulin, diet, exercise, and other physiologic factors. Interestingly, the dietary recommendations for T1DM have had very little systematic research. Many clinical observations, as well as emerging research studies, have noted that a carbohydrate-restricted diet can lead to normalization of blood glucoses with reduction in hypoglycemic reactions among motivated individuals. RECENT FINDINGS: In this paper, we review observations of carbohydrate restriction and propose a series of studi

Introducing a very low carbohydrate diet for a child with type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus is a serious autoimmune disease for which no cure is available. The treatment includes insulin therapy, carbohydrate counting, eating healthy foods, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy weight. The goal is to keep blood glucose levels close to normal most of the time to delay or prevent complications. Despite the increase in the use of insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors in recent years, the management of type 1 diabetes remains suboptimal in terms of glycaemic control and normal glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) level. This article discusses the case o

Natural Approaches in Diabetes Management: A Review of Diet, Exercise, and Natural Products.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a highly prevalent condition that causes significant morbidity and mortality in the United States and worldwide. Conventional therapies include lifestyle modification, oral pharmacological agents, and subcutaneous insulin. Emerging data suggest that natural approaches to the treatment of DM may help supplement current therapies for further glycemic control. Herein, we review the evidence of several natural modalities for DM treatment. We describe the pathophysiology of diabetes and its complications, provide an overview of current pharmacologic treatments, and finally

Diet-induced pre-diabetes slows cardiac conductance and promotes arrhythmogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes is associated with abnormal electrical conduction and sudden cardiac death, but the pathogenic mechanism remains unknown. This study describes electrophysiological alterations in a diet-induced pre-diabetic rat model and examines the underlying mechanism. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats were fed either high-fat diet and fructose water or normal chow and water for 6 weeks. The electrophysiological properties of the whole heart was analyzed by in vivo surface ECG recordings, as wells as ex vivo in Langendorff perfused hearts during baseline, ischemia and reperfussion. Large variations of sucrose in constant carbohydrate diets in type II diabetes.

Several studies show that sucrose does not aggravate hyperglycemia in type II diabetes mellitus, but sucrose is still restricted in dietary recommendations. Since sucrose in high carbohydrate diets elevates fasting triglyceride levels, the effects of sucrose were evaluated in diets with fixed carbohydrate levels. Eighteen diabetic volunteers receiving no medication were given weight maintenance diets with 50 percent carbohydrate, 35 percent fat, 15 percent protein, and 120 g of sucrose for 10 days as inpatients. They were then randomly assigned diets of similar composition with either 220 g of

Mediterranean diet preserves renal mitochondrial homeostasis and attenuates early diabetic kidney injury in db/db mice.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hyperglycemia, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction are central drivers of renal structural and functional alterations associated with metabolic disease and accelerated tissue aging. In type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), these mechanisms contribute to early kidney injury and progressive decline in renal resilience. Dietary interventions, including the Mediterranean diet (MD), have been proposed as complementary strategies to counteract metabolic stress, yet mechanistic evidence at the renal mitochondrial level remains limited. METHODS: Male db/db mice, a model of

Functional-Diet Potential of Black Cumin-Enriched Acha-Based Cookies on Plasmodium berghei-Infected Diabetic Mice.

The prevalence of diabetes and malaria remains high in developing countries despite remarkable progress in the health sector. Functional food remedies with acha grains and black cumin have been used locally to treat/manage type 2 diabetes (T2D) and malaria separately. However, this study sought to assess the comorbidity and the ameliorative potential of black cumin-enriched acha-based cookies in Plasmodium berghei infection in diabetic mice. High-fat diet fed mice of 20-25 g were grouped into eight groups (n = 8), while a single dose of streptozotocin (35 mg/kg) was intraperitoneally administe

Non-diabetic ketoacidosis associated with a low carbohydrate, high fat diet in a postpartum lactating female.

A 31-year old non-diabetic woman presented to our hospital with symptoms of dehydration, drowsiness, fatigue, shortness of breath and vomiting present for two consecutive days prior to admission. She had started a low carbohydrate, high fat (LCHF) diet to induce weight loss while breastfeeding her 4-month-old child 2 weeks prior to admission. The patient was found to have a severely high anion gap metabolic acidosis. It was determined to be due to ketoacidosis, which was as a result of carbohydrate restriction in the presence of increased metabolic demands related with the synthesis and secret

Allomyrina dichotoma Larva Extract Ameliorates the Hepatic Insulin Resistance of High-Fat Diet-Induced Diabetic Mice.

Allomyrina dichotoma larva is a nutritional-worthy future food resource and it contributes to multiple pharmacological functions. However, its antidiabetic effect and molecular mechanisms are not yet fully understood. Therefore, we investigated the hypolipidemic effect of A. dichotoma larva extract (ADLE) in a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced C57BL/6J mice model. Glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity in HFD-induced diabetic mice significantly improved after ADLE administration for six weeks. The levels of serum triglyceride (TG), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transferase (ALT) activ

Oral salmon calcitonin enhances insulin action and glucose metabolism in diet-induced obese streptozotocin-diabetic rats.

We previously reported that oral delivery of salmon calcitonin (sCT) improved energy and glucose homeostasis and attenuated diabetic progression in animal models of diet-induced obesity (DIO) and type 2 diabetes, although the glucoregulatory mode of action was not fully elucidated. In the present study we hypothesized that oral sCT as pharmacological intervention 1) exerted anti-hyperglycemic efficacy, and 2) enhanced insulin action in DIO-streptozotocin (DIO-STZ) diabetic rats. Diabetic hyperglycemia was induced in male selectively bred DIO rats by a single low dose (30mg/kg) injection of STZ

Six-month efficacy of benfluorex vs. placebo or metformin in diet-failed type 2 diabetic patients.

Six-month efficacy of benfluorex (Mediator) (150-450 mg/day) was assessed in a double-blind multicenter study vs. placebo or metformin hydrochloride (850-2550 mg/day). After a 2-month run-in period of strict dieting, 722 type 2 diabetic patients were randomized (1:2:2) to receive placebo (n=144), benfluorex (n=294) or metformin (n=284). After a 5-week dose-finding phase, the efficacy of benfluorex was compared with that of placebo (test for difference, main analysis) and metformin (non-inferiority test, secondary analysis) during a 6-month fixed-dose treatment. At entry after strict dieting, t

Diabetes, Alzheimer's Disease Risk Factors, and the Cafeteria Diet: A Comprehensive Review.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with multifaceted risk factors, including diet and metabolic dysfunction. The rising prevalence of AD and diabetes has drawn attention to their shared pathophysiological mechanisms. The "cafeteria diet," characterized by high-fat, high-sugar, and energy-dense foods, has emerged as a significant contributor to metabolic dysfunctions, including obesity and insulin resistance, which are risk factors for both diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases. This study explores the effects of the cafeteria diet on cognitive impairment, AD
