Freshwater Macroalgae, Oedogonium, Grown in Wastewater Reduce Diet-Induced Metabolic Syndrome in Rats.

Macroalgae produce compounds with industrial, pharmaceutical and nutritional applications. In this study, biomass from the freshwater macroalgal genus Oedogonium was grown in either treated municipal wastewater (M) or ash dam water from a coal-fired power station (D). The biomass was investigated for its metabolic responses in high-carbohydrate, high-fat diet-fed rats, a model of human metabolic syndrome. The Oedogonium biomass cultured in M contained higher amounts of K, Mg, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), insoluble fibre and β-carotene, while biomass grown in D contained higher a

Organic diet intervention significantly reduces urinary pesticide levels in U.S. children and adults.

BACKGROUND: Previous diet intervention studies indicate that an organic diet can reduce urinary pesticide metabolite excretion; however, they have largely focused on organophosphate (OP) pesticides. Knowledge gaps exist regarding the impact of an organic diet on exposure to other pesticides, including pyrethroids and neonicotinoids, which are increasing in use in the United States and globally. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of an organic diet intervention on levels of insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides or their metabolites in urine collected from adults and children. METHODS: We

Selegiline reduces adiposity induced by high-fat, high-sucrose diet in male rats.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Incidence and severity of obesity are increasing worldwide, however, efficient and safe pharmacological treatments are not yet available. Certain MAO inhibitors reduce body weight, although their effects on metabolic parameters have not been investigated. Here, we have assessed effects of a widely used, selective MAO-B inhibitor, selegiline, on metabolic parameters in a rat model of diet-induced obesity. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Male Long-Evans rats were given control (CON) or a high-fat (20%), high-sucrose (15%) diet (HFS) for 25 weeks. From week 16, animals were inject

Vegetarian diet reduces the risk of hypertension independent of abdominal obesity and inflammation: a prospective study.

OBJECTIVES: A vegetarian diet may prevent elevation of blood pressures and lower the risk for hypertension through lower degrees of obesity, inflammation, and insulin resistance. This study investigated the association between a vegetarian diet and hypertension incidence in a cohort of Taiwanese adult nonsmokers and examined whether this association was mediated through inflammation, abdominal obesity, or insulin resistance (using fasting glucose as a proxy). METHODS: This matched cohort study was from the 1994-2008 MJ Health Screening Database. Each vegetarian was matched with five nonvegeta

Protein-poor diet reduces host-specific immune gene expression in Bombus terrestris.

Parasites infect hosts non-randomly as genotypes of hosts vary in susceptibility to the same genotypes of parasites, but this specificity may be modulated by environmental factors such as nutrition. Nutrition plays an important role for any physiological investment. As immune responses are costly, resource limitation should negatively affect immunity through trade-offs with other physiological requirements. Consequently, nutritional limitation should diminish immune capacity in general, but does it also dampen differences among hosts? We investigated the effect of short-term pollen deprivation

Better diet quality before pregnancy is associated with reduced risk of gastroschisis in Hispanic women.

BACKGROUND: Gastroschisis is unique because of its substantial risk in pregnancies of adolescent women. Adolescents may have poor diet quality, which places them at higher risk of gastroschisis. OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether better maternal diet quality, measured by 2 different indices, reduced the risk of gastroschisis. METHODS: We used case-control data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study to investigate maternal diet quality among 1125 gastroschisis cases and 9483 controls (estimated delivery dates between 1997 and 2009). Cases were ascertained from 10 U.S. birth defect s

Reduced dry periods and varying prepartum diets alter postpartum ovulation and reproductive measures.

There has been substantial recent interest in shortening dry periods; however, the effects of this management change on reproduction have not been adequately evaluated. Holstein cows (n = 58) were assigned in a randomized block design to 1 of 3 treatments: 1) traditional (T) dry period (approximately 56 d) in which cows were fed a low energy diet from 56 to 29 d prepartum followed by a moderate energy diet for 28 d; 2) shortened (S) dry period (approximately 28 d) in which cows were fed continuously a high energy diet; or 3) no planned (N) dry period in which cows were fed continuously a high

Reduced anorexic effects of insulin in obesity-prone rats fed a moderate-fat diet.

Rats prone to develop diet-induced obesity (DIO) have reduced central sensitivity to many metabolic and hormonal signals involved in energy homeostasis. High-fat diets produce similar defects in diet-resistant (DR) rats. To test the hypothesis that genotype and diet exposure would similarly affect central insulin signaling, we assessed the anorectic effects of 8 mU third ventricular (iv3t) insulin before and after 4 wk intake of a 31% fat, high-energy (HE) diet intake in outbred (OutB) rats. Rats were retrospectively designated as DR or DIO by their low or high weight gains on HE diet. Before

Melatonin reduces body weight gain in Sprague Dawley rats with diet-induced obesity.

Melatonin is involved in the regulation of seasonal obesity in various species, including some rodents. This involvement has been demonstrated in nonphotoperiodic rodents like rats, but only in models of enhanced body weight such as genetically obese or middle-aged rats. The aim of this investigation was to determine the effects of melatonin on body weight and metabolic parameters in a model closer to that observed in Western populations, i.e. Sprague Dawley rats fed a high-fat diet. They were treated for 3 wk with melatonin (30 mg/kg) 4 h after lights-on [Zeitgeber time (ZT) 4] or 1 h before

Increasing the amount of fat in a conjugated linoleic acid-supplemented diet reduces lipodystrophy in mice.

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a naturally occurring group of dienoic derivatives of linoleic acid found in beef and dairy products. However, when 1 g CLA/100 g diet was given to mice in a low fat diet (4 g fat/100 g diet), they showed a marked decrease in fat mass, but demonstrated symptoms of lipoatrophic diabetes, i.e., marked hepatomegaly and insulin resistance. In this study, to determine whether the decrease in adipose tissue was responsible for these adverse effects, mice were fed different doses of CLA and dietary fat. In Experiment 1, mice were fed different doses of CLA (0, 0.1 an

Vitamin C supplementation of the maternal diet reduces the rate of malformation in the offspring of diabetic rats.

An excess of reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been associated with the increased rate of congenital malformations in experimental diabetic pregnancy. Previous in vitro and in vivo studies show that antioxidants can protect the embryonic development in a diabetic environment. In the present investigation we examined the antiteratogenic capacity of vitamin C, an antioxidative agent not previously evaluated as a dietary supplement in diabetic pregnancy. Normal and streptozotocin diabetic rats were either fed a standard diet or a diet enriched with 0.9, 1.8 or 4% sodium ascorbate throughout pregn

[Dietary fiber added to a very-low caloric diet reduces hunger and alleviates constipation].

To investigate whether supplement dietary fibre improves compliance to very low calorie diets (VLCD), a nutritional powder providing 388 kcal/day was compared with a similar preparation containing 30 plant fibre per day. Twenty-two obese patients participated in the study. After three days on their habitual diet they were allocated at random according to a single blind design to VLCD either with or without dietary fibre for two weeks. Thereafter, they were crossed over to the other form of diet for two further weeks. All of the patients completed the study. Both of the groups had considerable

Exploring the role of diet in reducing cancer risk in UK firefighters: Mediterranean pattern and the potential for targeted nutritional strategies.

Firefighters face significantly elevated cancer risks due to chronic exposure to carcinogenic fire effluents and occupational stressors. In 2022, the World Health Organization classified firefighting as a carcinogenic occupation, linking it to increased incidences of cancers, including mesothelioma, bladder, prostate, colon and melanoma. Drawing on UK-specific data where possible, this narrative review explores how dietary strategies, particularly the Mediterranean diet, may complement existing protective measures in mitigating these risks. It investigates specific food-based nutrients that sh

Quercetin and calorie restriction improve leptin/adiponectin balance through reducing high-fat diet-induced oxidative stress in male BALB/c mice.

Throughout the recent decades, obesity has become a serious health problem that raises the risk of several diseases, including cancer, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, neurological musculoskeletal disorders, and Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Some strategies, such as dietary interventions, calorie restriction (CR), and the use of antioxidant compounds, have been proposed to improve quality of life in relation to obesity. The goal of this study was to characterize the effects of CR and quercetin (QUER) on obesity-induced oxidative stress (OS). Thirty 8-week-old male BALB/c mice were d

Astaxanthin Ameliorates Worsened Muscle Dysfunction of MDX Mice Fed with a High-Fat Diet through Reducing Lipotoxicity and Regulating Gut Microbiota.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a severe X-linked inherited neuromuscular disease, has a high prevalence of obesity. Obesity exacerbates muscle damage and results in adverse clinical outcomes. Preventing obesity helps DMD patients delay disease progression and improve quality of life. Astaxanthin (AX) is a kind of carotenoid which has antioxidant and anti-adipogenesis effects. In this study, male C57BL/10ScSnDmdmdx/J mice were fed with a normal diet, a high-fat diet (HFD), and an HFD containing AX for 16 weeks, respectively. The results showed that AX significantly increased gastrocnemius f

Time-Restricted Feeding With High-Fat Diet Slows Weight Gain and Reduces Renal Calcium Oxalate Crystal Formation Without Reducing Energy Intake.

Renal calcium oxalate stones are closely linked to lipid metabolism disorders. A long-term high-fat diet (HFD) can lead to obesity and other metabolic disorders, which significantly contribute to stone formation. Recent studies indicate that time-restricted feeding (TRF) plays a crucial role in improving metabolic homeostasis and preventing metabolic diseases. However, its impact on kidney stone formation has yet to be investigated. We examined differences in calcium oxalate crystal formation in mouse kidneys using glyoxylic acid (Gly) modeling in HFD mouse models subjected to either ad libitu
