Editor's Highlights-September 2026.

Psychodermatology, adolescent mental health, quality-of-life measurement, financial toxicity, and teledermatology all show how dermatology increasingly extends beyond visible lesions. The September issue of the Journal addresses the psychological complexity of aesthetic and medical consultations, the psychiatric burden of atopic dermatitis in adolescence, limitations of a commonly used quality-of-life measurement, the financial toxicity experienced by patients with hidradenitis suppurativa, and the still uneven implementation of teledermatology and teledermoscopy in Europe. Together, these pap

Cerebral infarction associated with vasculitis due to varicella zoster virus in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus.

Cases of herpes zoster ophtalmicus (HZO) with delayed contralateral hemiparesis caused by hemispheric stroke secondary to granulomatous angiitis have been reported and are a well-recognized complication of herpes zoster. Similar cases have been reported more recently during infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We describe two HIV+ patients without any clinical history of zoster dermatitis who developed a sudden hemiparesis followed 2 weeks later for one by an acute retinal necrosis. Computerized tomography (CT) scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance angiograph

Psoriasiform acral dermatitis: a peculiar clinical presentation of psoriasis in children.

Recently an unusual chronic dermatosis, considered a new clinical entity and closely resembling psoriasis, has been described in the literature under the term psoriasiform acral dermatitis (PAD). It is characterized by cutaneous involvement of the digits without nail dystrophy. We describe three young patients, ages 6 to 8 years, in whom this condition was associated with psoriasis. Two children were affected by psoriasis vulgaris, while the third had a palmoplantar psoriasis. All laboratory investigations performed were within normal limits. Skin biopsy specimens taken from the fingers of two

The development and use of algorithms for diagnosing and choosing treatment of ostomy complications: results of a prospective evaluation .

Stoma complications are classified and treated based on the etiology, pathology, location, and clinical presentation of the complication. Clinical assessments and descriptions of abdominal stomal topography differ among care providers, hampering interpretation and communication. Using existing literature and clinical experience at the State Scientific Centre of Coloproctology in Russia, algorithms were developed to facilitate a uniform approach to the diagnosis and choice of treatment of ostomy complications. The algorithms consist of a definite sequence of explicit step-by-step pr

Genomic analysis of claw lesions in Holstein cows: Opportunities for genomic selection, quantitative trait locus detection, and gene identification.

Claw lesions are the third most important health issue in dairy cattle, after mastitis and reproductive disorders, and genomic selection is a key component for long-term improvement of claw health. The objectives of this study were to assess the feasibility of a genomic evaluation for claw health in French Holstein cows, explore possibilities to increase evaluation accuracy, and gain a better understanding of the genetic determinism of claw health traits. The data set consisted of 48,685 trimmed Holstein cows, including 9,646 that were genotyped; 478 genotyped sires were also used. Seven claw

Cystic fibrosis dermatitis arthritis syndrome: A series of four cases.

Dermatologic manifestations of cystic fibrosis (CF) include nutrient deficiency dermatoses, vasculitis, transient reactive papulotranslucent acrokeratodema, digital clubbing, and increased rates of atopy and drug reactions. Few cases of a characteristic eruption in patients with episodic arthritis of CF have been described with prior reports primarily occurring outside of the dermatology literature. We report four cases consistent with this presentation to add to the literature and propose a new and unifying name to recognize this entity as cystic fibrosis dermatitis arthritis syndrome (CF-DAS

Short communication: Determination of the ability of Thymox to kill or inhibit various species of microorganisms associated with infectious causes of bovine lameness in vitro.

Infectious claw diseases continue to plague cattle in intensively managed husbandry systems. Poor foot hygiene and constant moist environments lead to the infection and spread of diseases such as digital dermatitis (hairy heel warts), interdigital dermatitis, and interdigital phlegmon (foot rot). Currently, copper sulfate and formalin are the most widely used disinfecting agents in bovine footbaths; however, the industry could benefit from more environmentally and worker friendly substitutes. This study determined the in vitro minimum inhibitory concentrations and minimum bactericidal concentr

Laminitis and dermatitis in heifers associated with excessive carbohydrate intake: skin lesions and biochemical findings.

The effects of a sudden addition of a large quantity of readily fermentable carbohydrate to the feed ration of pregnant heifers are described. Clinical and pathological changes caused by the resulting disease were confined to the digits and skin. The 4 acutely affected heifers were reluctant to get up or move (group II). They tended to lie down or stand with feet bunched together and the back arched, often shifting weight from limb to limb. They walked stiffly with great tenderness and pain in the digits. Extreme pain was noticed when the digits were examined. In 4 of 8 heifers, separation of

Sabra dermatitis: combined features of delayed hypersensitivity and foreign body reaction to implanted glochidia.

A striking dermatitis referred to by its colloquial designation of sabra dermatitis is associated with glochidia inoculation from the Opuntia cactus commonly known as the prickly pear. We report a 45-year-old woman who had an unexpected encounter with a cactus plant during a trip to Texas. She brushed up against the plant and was aware that she had been inoculated with several spines of the plant. Five days later she developed erythematous papules on the digits accompanied by swelling. The biopsy showed a very striking granulomatous reaction pattern within the dermis. There was a linear patter

Efficacy and Tolerability of a Procedure Enhancement System with TriHex Technology®as a Pre- and Post-Radiofrequency Microneedling Regimen.

Postoperative recovery is an important consideration for patients planning dermal rejuvenation procedures. A topical procedure enhancement system (PES) containing a tripeptide and hexapeptide (TriHex Technology®; Alastin Skincare®, Carlsbad, CA) hastens recovery from facial rejuvenation procedures, such as laser resurfacing. We assessed the efficacy and tolerability of the PES compared to a standard-of-care antioxidant regimen for improving recovery following three monthly facial radiofrequency (RF) microneedling treatments. Assessments included grading pre- and posttreatment digital images by

Patch Testing During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Recommendations of the AEDV's Spanish Contact Dermatitis and Skin Allergy Research Group (GEIDAC).

As the COVID-19 pandemic gradually comes under control, the members of the Spanish Contact Dermatitis and Skin Allergy Research Group (GEIDAC) have drawn up a proposed list of the requirements, limitations, and conditioning factors affecting the resumption of work in contact dermatitis units. The assumption is that the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus2 is still circulating and that occasional or seasonal outbreaks will occur. They recommend that the first step should be to assess how many patch tests each clinic can handle and review the waiting list to prioritize cases according

Factors Influencing Self-Management Behaviors in Patients with Atopic Dermatitis and Intervention Strategies: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD), as a chronic, recurrent inflammatory skin disease, relies heavily on patients' self-management behaviors for long-term effective control. However, clinical practice indicates that patients' self-management status is generally unsatisfactory and is influenced by the interactive effects of multiple factors, including sociodemographic, disease-related, psychological, and social support factors. In this context, systematically reviewing the factors influencing self-management behaviors and existing intervention strategies is of great significance for optimizing

Spatial characterization of interface dermatitis in cutaneous lupus reveals novel chemokine ligand-receptor pairs that drive disease.

BACKGROUND: Chemokines play critical roles in the recruitment and activation of immune cells in both homeostatic and pathologic conditions. Here, we examined chemokine ligand-receptor pairs to better understand the immunopathogenesis of cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE), a complex autoimmune connective tissue disorder. OBJECTIVES: Our objectives were to (1) characterize the cellular and proteomic constitution of interface dermatitis in CLE using blister biopsies, (2) map chemokine:ligand receptor pairs that govern recruitment of immune cells to form interface dermatitis in CLE, and (3) perf

Three-part scoring system (tripartite) for teledermatology versus International Contact Dermatitis Research Group criteria to interpret patch test readings: A comparative, observational study.

Background The International Contact Dermatitis Research Group (ICDRG) grading is the gold standard and is used to interpret patch test results in allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). The ICDRG readings include a combination of visual and palpation findings. Digital photography limits palpation. An alternative scoring system exists to analyse 2D images and interpret patch test readings in teledermatology (TD). Aim To compare tri-partite scoring system (TPSS) (TD) with ICDRG (face-to-face) and to assess the feasibility of TPSS by TD. Methods In this observational study, two investigators each sco

The Impact of Social Media on Parental Decision-Making in the Management of Pediatric Allergic Diseases.

OBJECTIVE: With the digital transformation, parents increasingly use social media (SM) for health information; however, the reliability of online content remains uncertain, posing risks of misinformation and unsupervised treatment changes. Therefore, the study aimed to evaluate the frequency of SM-driven treatment modifications and their clinical consequences among parents of children with allergic rhinitis (AR), asthma, or atopic dermatitis (AD) and to characterize parents' SM use patterns and trust in online health information. METHODS: This cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was con

[Digital health applications in psychotherapeutic care in dermatology?-Overview of offers, opportunities, and challenges].

Chronic inflammatory skin diseases such as psoriasis, acne, or atopic dermatitis are frequently associated with psychological comorbidities including depression, anxiety disorders, or sleep disturbances. These burdens are clinically relevant and have a significant impact on both the course of the disease and patients' quality of life. However, access to psychotherapeutic care is often hindered by long waiting times and a lack of established structures within standard dermatological care. The integration of digital interventions therefore appears both important and promising. The aim of this wo

Digital Additional Risk Minimization Measures: An Exploratory Study Using Qualitative Feedback from Healthcare Professionals and Patients Across Six Countries.

BACKGROUND: Additional risk minimization measures (aRMMs) are required for some pharmaceutical products when routine risk minimization measures (i.e., product labeling) are deemed insufficient. Measures often include educational materials, such as paper brochures, leaflets, and/or alert cards that provide information to healthcare professionals and patients on the key risks associated with a product and risk minimization actions to take should particular signs or symptoms arise. Paper-based educational aRMMs have several limitations. They do not present information in an interactive manner, an
