The Information Void in Asymptomatic Chronic Disease: A Digital Health Framework for Understanding Social Media Health Information Seeking in Young Adults.

Nearly 1 in 4 young adults has a chronic condition, yet many feel well despite their diagnosis. Asymptomatic conditions such as prediabetes and hypertension create a unique vulnerability to digital health misinformation, particularly on platforms where inaccurate content is prevalent. Conventional clinical responses, which often just warn patients about online misinformation, fail to address the underlying drivers of this behavior. This viewpoint proposes a novel disease characteristic-based vulnerability framework to understand this challenge, grounded in established behavioral science theori

Retrospecting Digital Media Use, Negative Emotions, and Trust Gaps During the COVID-19 Pandemic in China: Cross-Sectional Web-Based Survey.

BACKGROUND: Retrospecting the trust gaps and their dynamics during the pandemic is crucial for understanding the root causes of postpandemic challenges and offers valuable insights into preparing for future public health emergencies. The COVID-19 pandemic eroded people's trust in strangers and acquaintances, while their trust in family members remained relatively stable. This resulted in 2 trust gaps, namely, the family members-strangers trust gap and the family members-acquaintances trust gap. Widening trust gaps impede social integration and undermine the effective management of public healt

Developing Digital Media to Destigmatize Emergency Department Human Immunodeficiency Virus Testing Among Sexual and Racial Minority Youth: A Hyper-iterative Methodology.

Rates of undiagnosed youth human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remain problematically high across the United States and internationally. In addition, youth HIV test rates remain consistently low, and youth with HIV remain undiagnosed for longer periods of time as compared with older populations. Youth HIV remains especially persistent among African American adolescents and emerging adults, who are less likely to have consistent access to primary care and thus to HIV testing and prevention education. Therefore, increasing youth HIV test rates has become an important priority in emergency departm

Digital stress and problematic social media use among college students: exploring dual emotional pathways and the moderating role of cognitive reappraisal.

Digital stress has emerged as a significant form of psychological strain in online environments and is closely associated with problematic social media use (PSMU). However, the emotional and cognitive processes underlying this relationship remain unclear. Guided by the stress-coping framework and the Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution (I-PACE) model, the present study examined whether anxiety and depression mediate the association between digital stress and PSMU, and whether cognitive reappraisal moderates these indirect effects. A total of 2,103 Chinese university students (1,03

A critical anthropological evaluation of digital media based interventions for mycetoma in Sudan; the case of "Hope for a Devastating Neglected Disease" documentary film.

Mycetoma, a disfiguring and debilitating neglected tropical disease (NTD), long languished in obscurity. Prior to 2013, limited research, ineffective treatments, and inadequate global recognition plagued the disease. However, a pivotal 2013 meeting in Geneva marked a turning point. Recognizing advocacy as a critical missing link, the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (DNDi) spearheaded efforts to raise awareness and address knowledge gaps. Scientific symposia, media coverage, and research collaborations, including the DNDi trial, paved the way for mycetoma inclusion in the 2016 WHO NTD l

Modeling Daily Digital Experiences in Adolescents: A Multilevel Latent Class Analysis of Social Media Engagement Patterns and Exposure to Alcohol-Related Content.

This study used multilevel Latent Class Analysis (mLCA), a day-level, person-centered approach to examine adolescents' social media engagement, and associated it with exposure to alcohol-related content. Participants were 302 adolescents (Mage = 16.21) who completed 21 days of ecological momentary assessment and weekly surveys. Using multilevel latent class analysis, we identified six distinct engagement types: No Use, Passive Use, Liked/Reacted, Moderate Engagement, Discussion, and High Engagement. Sixty-one percent of adolescents spent most days in one dominant class. Exposure to alcohol-rel

Loneliness, problematic digital media use, and nutritional-metabolic vulnerability in adolescents from single-parent households: an integrative review of eating- and sleep-related pathways.

Adolescents from single-parent households may experience household time, economic, supervisory, and routine-related constraints that are relevant to psychosocial well-being, digital media use, eating behavior, sleep, and metabolic health. The objective of this integrative review was to synthesize evidence on the associations of loneliness and problematic digital media use with eating- and sleep-related behaviors in adolescents and to examine how single-parent household characteristics may influence these relationships. The review applies a contextual-behavioral vulnerability model in which hou

Studying the effects of digital arts-based interventions on teenagers' social media usage, brain connectivity, and mental health: study protocol of the SMART project.

Background: Social media (SM) has become ubiquitous among youth. However, which SM activities are beneficial or detrimental for the wellness of children and adolescents is still under debate. While some reports highlight positive outcomes of SM in learning, social interaction, and wellbeing, other investigations suggest that the overuse of SM induces decreased attention, cognitive, and emotional control, and increases mental-health related disorders (e.g. depression and anxiety). Interestingly, the cognitive and emotional functions negatively affected by the intense use of SM, as well as some
