Strong epidemiological evidence suggests that onchocerciasis may be associated with epilepsy-hence the name onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy (OAE). However, the pathogenesis of OAE still needs to be elucidated, as recent studies have failed to detect Onchocerca volvulus in the central nervous system of persons with OAE. Therefore, it was suggested that a potentially neurotropic virus transmitted by blackflies could play a role in triggering OAE. To investigate this hypothesis, adult blackflies were collected in an onchocerciasis-endemic area with a high OAE prevalence in the Ntui Health Dist

The evolution of pyrethroid insecticide resistance in Culex tarsalis Coquillett, a vector for West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis viruses, is a growing concern in Northern California. Common mechanisms of resistance include the target-site mutation, kdr, and increased levels of detoxification enzymes, such as mixed-function oxidases, GSTs, and esterases. The goal of this study was to compare the prevalence of kdr mutations (L1014F and L1014S) and detoxification enzymes between pyrethroid susceptible and resistant Cx. tarsalis individuals. Individual mosquitoes, categorized by resistance statu

The juvenile hormone analog S-methoprene is the only synthetic biopesticide that is registered with the United States Environmental Protection Agency to control arthropods of economic importance in public health, livestock, pets, urban, and stored products. The high activity, relative target specificity, and benign environmental profile of S-methoprene have been well documented. While the risk of resistance in mosquitoes to S-methoprene is generally low, there is a lack of information regarding cross resistance in S-methoprene-resistant mosquitoes to other pesticides. In this paper, a populati

Hypoderma larvae are tissue invading parasites which spend several months migrating within the host tissues before completing their development in the sub-dermal tissues of the back. Subcutaneous stages of the parasite produce an inflammatory reaction in the skin called "warbles", as well as holes through which larvae breathe. In order to elucidate the microscopical structure of the warbles, three hides from warbled cows were collected in a slaughterhouse in Lugo (NW, Spain) between March and May 2012. A total of 60 skin samples, including warbles at different phases of development, were chose

Cytological descriptions are given for two sympatric sibling species, Simulium praelargum IIIL-st and Simulium praelargum IIIL-1.2, from Darjeeling, West Bengal, India. Sibling IIIL-1.2 differs from IIIL-st by a two step fixed included inversion (IIIL-1.2) found on the long arm of chromosome III. Both siblings possess heterochromatinized IIIS polytene chromosome ends, while IIIL-1.2 is unique within the Simuliidae in that it exhibits a very large enhanced chromocentre that persists in normal somatic tissue, contrary to other chromocentre-containing taxa. In IIIL-1.2, the chromocentre occurs as

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that genes involved in the reproductive biology of insect disease vectors are potential targets for future alternative methods of control. Little is known about the molecular biology of reproduction in phlebotomine sand flies and there is no information available concerning genes that are expressed in male reproductive organs of Lutzomyia longipalpis, the main vector of American visceral leishmaniasis and a species complex.
METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We generated 2678 high quality ESTs ("Expressed Sequence Tags") of L. longipalpis male reproductive organs th

Synanthropic flies outstanding beside other flies due their relative abundance close to domestic animals and human population, to which they are able to cause myiasis or transmit pathogenic agents. As they're necrophagous they act as corpse decomposers and are useful in the forensic entomology in the post mortem interval determination. This study aimed to know flies diversity and abundance in Campo Grande, State of Mato Grosso do Sul. Captures were made weekly, utilizing three traps baited with decaying fish meat, from June of 2008 to May of 2009 in a remainder ciliary forest of the Embrapa's

Bat flies are obligate ectoparasites of bats and it has been hypothesized that they may be involved in the transmission of Bartonella species between bats. A survey was conducted to identify whether Cyclopodia greefi greefi (Diptera: Nycteribiidae) collected from Ghana and 2 islands in the Gulf of Guinea harbour Bartonella. In total, 137 adult flies removed from Eidolon helvum, the straw-coloured fruit bat, were screened for the presence of Bartonella by culture and PCR analysis. Bartonella DNA was detected in 91 (66·4%) of the specimens examined and 1 strain of a Bartonella sp., initially ide

Myiasis is defined as an infestation of the organs and/or tissues of human and other animals by fly maggots. Fly species that normally breed in meat or carrion (Diptera: Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae) may become involved in cutaneous myiasis by colonizing preexisting wounds. Reports of human wound myiasis contracted in hospitals and nursing homes, especially when patients are chronically ill or bed-ridden, are not uncommon across North America and often result in cases of neglect and civil litigation. Based on a case history dealing with this latter situation and circumstances surrounding the t

More than 2000 species of black flies feed on vertebrate blood; 1.5% of all species are vectors of pathogens that cause human diseases. Of nine simuliid-borne animal diseases, only two, mansonellosis and onchocerciasis, afflict humans. Onchocerciasis is a debilitating disease infecting an estimated 40 million people in Africa, Latin America, and Yemen, whereas mansonellosis is a mild disease in the Neotropics. Cytogenetic studies of natural populations of more than 500 species of black flies have revealed that the classic morphospecies of taxonomists is typically a complex of two or more repro

Electrocution techniques were used to determine if treated targets similar to those used for tsetse control could be developed for stable fly control. In a series of two experiments, a half blue and half black (UK) 1 m2 target constructed of trigger cotton poplin was determined to be acceptable for development studies. In the first experiment, an average of 350 stable flies per hour (maximum 794 flies in 1 h) was collected using the UK target. A time-delayed circuit trial using untreated UK targets demonstrated that stable flies remained on or around the targets for at least 30 s. Two experime

A new method for collecting 3rd-instar Hypoderma lineatum (Villers) and Hypoderma bovis (L.) is described. A procedure for carrying out chronobiological and other studies involving the life cycle of these flies is included. The larvae are collected from cattle using a dressing made of a circle of cardboard attached to a piece of tulle similar in color to the coat of the animal. These small cloth cages were attached to the animal skin with fast-drying contact glue wherever the swellings produced by 2nd- or 3rd-instar Hypoderma spp. had been previously detected. Each animal was inspected daily t

From May 1984 to May 1985, the transmission of onchocerciasis by blackflies (Dipteria: Simuliidae) was studied around Gilgel Ghibe and Gojeb rivers in southwest Ethiopia. The predominant anthropophilic species of Simulium at both localities were S. (Edwardsellum) damnosum sensu lato and S. (Lewisellum) ethiopiense. Some S. (Anasolen) dentulosum also landed on human bait at Gilgel Ghibe river. Dissections of S. damnosum from Gilgel Ghibe and Gojeb revealed mean parous rates of 92% (n = 18,291) and 84% (n = 9530), respectively. S. ethiopiense from Gilgel Ghibe and Gojeb showed mean parous rates

Ten taxa of Stomoxyinae were tested for their ability to transmit Trypanosoma brucei, T. vivax, T. evansi and T. congolense to mice within 3 min of interrupted feeding on highly parasitaemic blood. T. brucei was the easiest parasite to transmit with an 11.5% success rate, followed by T. vivax at 3.4%, and T. evansi at 0.9%. T. congolense was not transmitted in 129 attempts. Stomoxys niger sspp. and four unstudied species (S. varipes, S. taeniatus, S. pallidus, Haematobosca squalida) were capable of transmitting trypanosomes mechanically.

The authors describe an unusual infestation of an ulcerative squamous cell carcinoma of the scalp and skull with Diptera Sarcophaga larvae. Human myiasis is rare in temperate zones and presents a rather unique neurosurgical challenge. The clinical presentation and treatment of human myiasis are briefly discussed.
