Hurricane Sandy's impact on the predisaster homeless and homeless shelter services in New Jersey.

Presently, there is little research on how people experiencing homelessness prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. Existing emergency management literature does not provide an understanding of how disasters affect homeless shelter services. The present study seeks to fill these gaps by examining how Hurricane Sandy impacted homeless shelters and their guests in New Jersey. Presenting findings from ethnographic research in Atlantic City and Hoboken, this study identifies several areas in which homeless shelters and their guests may be able to assist in emergency response and disas

Methods for identification of 28 burn victims following a 1996 bus accident in Spain.

A car collided head-on with a bus containing 56 passengers plus the driver. A few seconds after the crash, the bus caught fire and 28 persons (15 male and 13 female) lost their lives. All the deceased were almost completely incinerated. To establish the identity of the victims, the judge in charge of the case designated a multidisciplinary Identification Commission. Postmortem procedures included a general external examination, routine photographs, dental examination, dental (intraoral and extraoral) and general radiographs (chest, ankle, etc.), and complementary biological methods for identif

Health impacts and medical assistance after Libyan flood disaster: Emergency medical teams' responses.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Floods are the most frequent natural disasters and pose direct and indirect health risks, some well-documented and others poorly understood. Epidemiological studies help bridge these gaps and guide effective public health responses. In September 2023, Storm Daniel caused severe flooding in Libya, damaging infrastructure, including healthcare facilities. The disaster affected 250,000 people, displaced 48,000, and claimed 15,000 lives, making it the second deadliest natural disaster of the year. This study aims to assess the characteristics of flood-affected patients to improve di

Detecting volatile organic compounds to locate human remains in a simulated collapsed building.

The occurrence of mass disasters has increased worldwide due to changing environments from global warming and a heightened threat of terrorism acts. When these disasters strike, it is imperative to rapidly locate and recover human victims, both the living and deceased. While search and rescue dogs are used to locate the living, cadaver detection dogs are typically tasked with locating the dead. This can prove challenging because commingling of victims is likely to occur during disasters in populated areas which will impact the decomposition process and the resulting odour produced. To date, th

[Identification of cadavers in the Netherlands].

The identification of cadavers of unknown persons is important from a humanitarian point of view but also for legal reasons and in connection with insurance. Various identification techniques are available today, such as fingerprinting, DNA profiling and the comparison of dental structures. Not all methods of identification are equally useful in practice and the ultimate identification is often made possible only by a combination of several techniques. Sometimes, the identification procedure cannot be completed successfully because one has no idea whatsoever who it might be and there is theref

Stressful but rewarding: Norwegian personnel mobilised for the 2004 tsunami disaster.

Adequate responses to disasters and emergency situations rely, among other factors, on coping abilities in disaster workers and emergency personnel. In this study, different aspects of disaster-related stressors and training/experience were investigated in Norwegian personnel (n = 581) mobilised for the 2004 tsunami disaster. The level of stress reactions, measured nine to ten months after the tsunami, was relatively low in this sample, indicating that the personnel coped well with the challenges of the disaster. The level of intrusive memories was higher in disaster-area personnel (n = 335) t

[Redefining habitat and mental health of flood victims.].

During the July 1996 floods in the Saguenay area, many families lost everything : house, land and personal belongings. This disturbing situation forced many victims to let go of their home. A review of the literature has allowed to conclude that individuals develop profound feelings towards their homes and that its destruction entails disorganization as well as negative thoughts threatening their psychological equilibrium. With the objective of identifying the consequences of this disaster on the concept of home and mental health of victims, an exploratory study was realized during winter 1998

The Family Physician's Role During Disasters.

Family physicians can encourage disaster planning and mock disaster exercises in their community. If involved in an actual disaster, the family physician can be helpful as a triage officer in emergency, in initial resuscitation, in minor treatment, in discharging stable patients, and in counselling victims of post-traumatic shock syndrome. The key to effective performance is being prepared beforehand to cope with the stress and confusion of the incident. Use of laboratory and diagnostic imaging must be curtailed until all severely injured patients are treated.

[The Great East Japan Earthquake: Risk Factors for Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms].

The Great East Japan Earthquake and following Tsunami struck the northeastern coast of Japan on March 11, 2011 and left approximately 21,389 dead or missing. Further, approximately 200,000 survivors were forced to live in uncomfortable environments after they had been evacuated. The survivors were not only damaged both physically and mentally, but they were also forced to change their lifestyle habits during the refuge life. It is well known that exposure to natural disasters, such as the Great East Japan Earthquake, has been associated with a variety of mental health consequences. Post trauma

Disaster management and government intervention in PNG: the case of Lae.

This paper describes government intervention in two flood disasters in Lae before and after the establishment of the Papua New Guinea disaster management body. It first describes the objectives behind the establishment of this, and second, it examines the organisational response to the 1983 and 1992 disasters in Lae. Disaster response in terms of relief operations is generally prompt and spontaneous but can at best be described as haphazard, unsystematic and often uncoordinated. Both national and provincial disaster committees are, in many aspects, ill equipped in terms of capabilities, skills

Implications for Social Support on Prolonged Sleep Difficulties among a Disaster-Affected Population: Second Report from a Cross-Sectional Survey in Ishinomaki, Japan.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the role of social factors, especially social support for sleep, among victims living at home around 1-2 years after the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami. DESIGN: A cross-sectional household survey was conducted between May and December 2012 (14-21 months after the disaster) in the Ishinomaki area, Japan. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to examine the association between social factors, including social support, and prolonged sleep difficulties (persisting over 1 month). Social support was divided into t

The 'slow-burn effect' of human trafficking following disaster.

A disaster is frequently cited as a driver of human trafficking, with claims that earthquakes, tsunamis, or typhoons create a chaotic post-calamity environment ripe for traffickers to recruit their victims. Theory suggests that increased poverty, displacement, and a breakdown of law and order contribute to this situation. Yet, there is little discussion in the literature of how post-disaster trafficking unfolds, coupled with a dearth of empirical evidence. This paper challenges existing disaster-trafficking assumptions through interviews with trafficking survivors in the Philippines, a disaste

Recognizing the role of bereavement and reactive depression in modern psychiatry.

In the modern world the recognition, understanding and treatment of bereavement in recent widows, widowers, those who experienced severe medical and surgical trauma, and victims of disasters is essential for all physicians, rescue workers such as the International Red Cross, and the community in general. This paper reviews the consequences of personal encounters with catastrophic events, as well as methods of immediate and long-term management. Similarly, the dynamic manifestations and treatment of psychologic dissonance in the family of victims, the community, and survivors are addressed. Of

Prolonged effects of participation in disaster relief operations after the Mid-Niigata earthquake on increased cardiovascular risk among local governmental staff.

OBJECTIVE: Major disasters can affect the health status of the victims. However, the effects on the health status of those involved in disaster relief operations are unclear. The aim of this study was to clarify how disaster-related administrative workloads affect the cardiovascular risk factors of local governmental staff. METHODS: A big earthquake struck the central area of Niigata Prefecture, Japan, in October 2004. Thereafter, the Niigata Prefectural Government was engaged in intensive disaster relief operations until March 2005. We compared the changes in the cardiovascular risk factor m

[Disaster psychiatry in late life].

Disaster preparedness in geriatric psychiatry was proposed on the basis of experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake. 1) Frail or demented elderly should be considered as a special population at risk for disaster victims and addressed in local disaster prevention programs. 2) To response to various psychiatric symptoms(delirium, BPSD, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and posttraumatic stress disorder) caused by medical conditions and rapid environmental changes due to disaster, linkage and coordination systems between psychiatric and medical sections should be established. 3) As a medium- an
