Communicable Diseases Network Australia National Arbovirus and Malaria Advisory Committee annual report, 2006-07.

This report describes the epidemiology of mosquito-borne disease in Australia for the mosquito-borne disease season 1 July 2006 to 30 June 2007, which was moderately low compared to previous seasons. Ross River virus (RRV) infections (55%), Barmah Forest virus (BFV) infections (29%) and overseas acquired malaria (11%) were the most common mosquito-borne diseases reported in 2006-07. The number, proportion and rate of national BFV notifications were the second highest on record since 1998-99. The Northern Territory reported the highest BFV notification rate this season. BFV notification rates w

An overview of the epidemiology of notifiable infectious diseases in Australia, 1991-2011.

We reviewed the first 21 years (1991-2011) of Australia's National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS). All nationally notified diseases (except HIV/AIDS and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease) were analysed by disease group (n = 8), jurisdiction (six states and two territories), Indigenous status, age group and notification year. In total, 2 421 134 cases were analysed. The 10 diseases with highest notification incidence (chlamydial infection, campylobacteriosis, varicella zoster, hepatitis C, influenza, pertussis, salmonellosis, hepatitis B, gonococcal infection, and Ross River virus infe

Sociodemographic and geographical inequalities in notifiable infectious diseases in Australia: a retrospective analysis of 21 years of national disease surveillance data.

BACKGROUND: Australia is a high-income country with a well established and largely publicly funded health-care system. However, some populations within Australia have shorter life expectancy and worse health outcomes than others. We explored geographical variations and sociodemographic inequities in infectious disease notifications in Australia. METHODS: In this retrospective study, we analysed National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) notifications from 1991-2011 (n=2·4 million). We assessed the effect of socioeconomic disadvantage and remoteness of residence on national notif

Effect of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on chlamydia and gonorrhoea notifications and testing in Queensland, Australia: an interrupted time series analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate trends in testing and notifications of chlamydia and gonorrhoea during the COVID-19 pandemic in Queensland, Australia. METHODS: Statewide disease notification and testing data between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2021 were modelled using interrupted time series. A segmented regression model estimated the pre-pandemic trend and observed effect of the COVID-19 pandemic response on weekly chlamydia notifications, monthly gonorrhoea notifications and monthly testing figures. The intervention time point was 29 March 2020, when key COVID-19 public health restrictions wer

Australia's notifiable diseases status, 1997. Annual report of the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System.

In 1997 there were 89,579 notifications to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System. A notable feature of 1997 was the pertussis outbreak which peaked towards the end of the year and resulted in 10,668 cases being notified. The highest number of notifications received was for hepatitis C (unspecified) with 19,692 notifications; this is the first year for which data have been reported for New South Wales and South Australia for this disease category. The number of measles cases rose after the low number reported in 1996 but is still well below the number reported in the outbreak yea

Annual vaccine-preventable disease report for New South Wales, Australia, 2014.

This report provides an epidemiological description of selected vaccine-preventable diseases in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, for 2014 to inform ongoing disease monitoring and control efforts. A trend of increasing pertussis notifications was observed, beginning midway through 2014 with the highest disease rates in the 5-9 year age group. Measles notifications increased to 67 cases in 2014 from 34 cases in 2013. Measles cases were associated with travel-related importations-predominantly from the Philippines-and secondary transmission increased compared to 2013 involving three main disease

Variability in Notification of Positive Newborn Screening Results for Sickle Cell Trait Across the United States.

Universal in the United States (US) since 2006, newborn screening (NBS) programs for sickle cell disease (SCD) allow for early identification of the disease and, as an unintentional byproduct, identification of sickle cell trait (SCT). Unlike other carrier states, SCT is highly prevalent and is found in nearly 3 million Americans, which results in important reproductive implications. Currently, all NBS programs in the US are responsible for their own policies regarding SCT notification, and little is known about how SCT notification practices are performed and how these practices vary across N

Examining the direct costs and effectiveness of syphilis detection by selective screening and partner notification.

Selective screening and partner notification are two principal means of preventing and controlling syphilis in the United States, yet few studies have been undertaken to compare and evaluate the cost or effectiveness of detecting syphilis using either strategy. The objective of this paper is to assess from the perspective of a health department the cost-effectiveness of selective screening compared with the strategy of partner notification in the detection of early syphilis in Houston, Texas, in 1994 and 1995. The cost-effectiveness analysis was performed using the recurring direct costs assoc

Partner notification for syphilis: a randomized, controlled trial of three approaches.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the cost and effectiveness of three approaches to partner notification for infectious syphilis. STUDY DESIGN: People with syphilis were randomly assigned to: (1) notification of partners by patients themselves within 2 days or disease intervention specialists would notify them; (2) immediate notification by intervention specialist; or (3) immediate notification by intervention specialists, who had the option of drawing blood in the field. Costs of intervention specialists' time, travel, and overhead were measured. Intention-to-treat analysis measured outcomes per rando

A pluralistic approach to interpreting surveillance data: The likely decline in the occurrence of invasive pneumococcal disease in Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic.

PURPOSE: To systematically investigate whether the decline in invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD; caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae) notifications during the COVID-19 pandemic, based on Japan's national infectious disease surveillance system, was due to a reduction in incidence. METHODS: Considering potential surveillance biases from changes in healthcare-seeking, testing/diagnosis, or reporting, we compared the following for the 12-month period before vs. after the state of emergency declaration (week 15, 2020): notification rates of IPD, invasive Haemophilus influenzae disease (IHD), and l
