Comparative efficacy evaluation of disinfectants against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2.

BACKGROUND: Disinfection is one of the most effective ways to block the rapid transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). Due to the prolonged coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, disinfectants have become crucial to prevent person-to-person transmission and decontaminate hands, clothes, facilities and equipment. However, there is a lack of accurate information on the virucidal activity of commercial disinfectants. AIM: To evaluate the virucidal efficacy of 72 commercially available disinfectants constituting 16 types of ingredients against SARS-CoV-

A New Synergistic Strategy for Virus and Bacteria Eradication: Towards Universal Disinfectants.

In response to the COVID-19 and monkeypox outbreaks, we present the development of a universal disinfectant to avoid the spread of infectious viral diseases through contact with contaminated surfaces. The sanitizer, based on didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC), N,N-bis(3-aminopropyl)dodecylamine (APDA) and γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD), shows synergistic effects against non-enveloped viruses (poliovirus type 1 and murine norovirus) according to the EN 14476 standard (≥99.99% reduction of virus titer). When a disinfectant product is effective against them, it can be considered that it will be effec

Resistance of poliovirus 1 and enterovirus A71 against alcohol and other disinfectants.

Poliovirus 1 (PV 1) is the standard virus used in tests to support claims of virucidal property in commercial hand sanitizers and disinfectants in China. Classified within the same genus as poliovirus, enterovirus A71 (EV A71), which causes hand-foot-mouth disease among children, has caused numerous outbreaks in China and other countries. Hand hygiene and surface cleaning are critical to prevent and control this disease and many other infectious diseases. This study compared the efficacies of 17 self-made alcohol-based hand sanitizers and 10 commercially available disinfectants (4 high-level,

The Effect of Disinfectants on Quinolone Resistant E. coli (QREC) in Biofilm.

The aim of disinfection is to reduce the number of microorganisms on surfaces which is a challenge due to biofilms. In the present study, six quinolone resistant Escherichia coli (QREC) strains with three different biofilm matrix compositions were included to assess the log10 colony forming units (CFU) reduction effect of three disinfectants at various exposure times on biofilm of different ages and morphotypes. Biofilm was formed on stainless steel coupons for two and five days before transferred to tubes with Virocid 0, 25%, VirkonS 1%, and TP990 1% and left for various exposure times. The b

[Use and adverse reactions of local antibiotics and disinfectants on the skin].

The local antibiotics are an important addition to the treatment of moderately severe skin infections. Development of contact allergy and bacterial resistance, however, are some of the adverse reactions that may occur. Fusidic acid and tetracycline are the most suitable products for the treatment of superficial primary infections of the skin caused by Gram-positive cocci and secondary infected dermatoses. In case of insufficient effect mupirocin may be tried. Mupirocin is an effective antibiotic in the treatment of nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus in cases of increased risk of infection

Experiments on antiviral activity of hand disinfectants. Some theoretical and practical considerations.

Various members of the picornavirus family, adenovirus 2, papovavirus SV40, as well as rotaviruses were tested for inactivation of infectivity by hand disinfectants formulated on the basis of ethanol. The inactivating effect of povidine-iodine (Betaisodona) on enteroviruses and rotaviruses was also investigated. The degree of inactivation by these disinfectants on the various non-enveloped viruses studied, however, was found unpredictable. In fact, striking differences with the very same disinfectant existed even for members of one virus family. Isopropanol was inactive against enteroviruses.

[Sensitivity of different strains of the causative agent of plague to disinfectants].

Various strains of the plague microbe was found to have statistically significant differences in their sensitivity to phenol, formaldehyde and chloramine. These differences did not correlate with the origin, virulence and nutritional requirements of the plague strains. The sensitivity of the plague microbe to formaldehyde and phenol was found to be related to the permeability of its cell wall.

The relative effectiveness of commonly used disinfectants in inactivation of echovirus 11.

Echovirus 11 in the presence of fetal calf serum was exposed to six commonly used disinfectants for times of 10, 20 and 30 s. At the end of such exposure times, skim milk neutralized disinfectant activity and residual virus was assayed using the plaque technique. The six disinfectants studied were Javex, sodium hydroxide, ethanol, Wescodyne, One Stroke Ves-Phene, and Sonacide. Although 0.25% (w/v) sodium hydroxide and 95% (v/v) ethanol were equally virucidal and significantly more so than the other four disinfectants, causing 10(6) reduction in 20 s, they may not be practical to use in many in

Disinfectants facilitate the transformation of exogenous antibiotic resistance genes via multiple pathways.

The prevalence and spread of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria pose a global challenge to public health. Natural transformation is one of the essential ways for horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Although disinfectants are frequently used during COVID-19, little is known about whether these disinfectants are associated with the transformation of plasmid-borne ARGs. In our study, we assessed the effect of some disinfectants on bacterial transformation using resistance plasmids as extracellular DNA and E. coli DH5α as the recipient bacteria. The results showed that these

Nanomaterial-Augmented Formulation of Disinfectants and Antiseptics in Controlling SARS CoV-2.

The worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has brought significant consideration toward innovative strategies for overcoming the viral spread. Nanotechnology will change our lives in several forms as its uses span from electronics to pharmaceutical procedures. The use of nanoparticles provides a possibility to promote new antiviral treatments with a low possibility of increasing drug resistance compared to typical chemical-based antiviral treatments. Since the long-term usage of disinfectants and antiseptics at high concentrations has deleterious impacts on well-being and the environment, this review was

Study on the In Vitro Activity of Five Disinfectants against Nosocomial Bacteria.

Nosocomial infections cause significant morbidity and mortality worldwide, and the pathogenic organisms responsible for such infections can develop resistance to antimicrobial agents. Understanding the activity of disinfectants against clinical and environmental bacterial isolates is therefore crucial. We analysed the in vitro activity of five antimicrobial products (phenolic compounds, didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC), sodium hypochlorite, isopropanol + ammonium compounds (IACs), hydrogen peroxide) against 187 bacterial strains comprising clinical isolates, as well as 30 environmental
