CANINE DISTEMPER AND PARVOVIRUS VACCINATION WITH RECOMBITEK C3 IN AFRICAN WILD DOGS (LYCAON PICTUS).

Infectious disease threats are increasingly recognized as a major contributor to mortality in wild populations of African wild dog (Lycaon pictus, AWD). Canine distemper virus (CDV) infection has been implicated as a cause of pack mortality in both captive and wild AWD populations. Ten animals were vaccinated with RecombitekTM C3, a vaccine containing a recombinant CDV, and modified live canine parvovirus (CPV) and adenovirus-2 components, at 8, 12, and 16 wk of age. Half of the pups received the vaccine IM and the other half SC. All ten pups had a positive serological response to CDV after th

The recombinant EHV-1 vector producing CDV hemagglutinin as potential vaccine against canine distemper.

Canine distemper virus (CDV), is a pantropic agent of morbillivirus that causes fetal disease in dogs. Base on a broad host rang of CDV, the continued vaccines inoculation is unavoidable to pose gene recombination risk in vaccine virus and wild virus. The current study presents the construction of novel vectors, using equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) expressing the canine distemper virus (CDV). The recent field strain hemagglutinin protein and nucleoprotein were used for the construction of the viral vector vaccines. Based on the Bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) genomes of EHV-1 RacH str

Efficacy of Recombinant Canine Distemper Virus Expressing Leishmania Antigen against Leishmania Challenge in Dogs.

Canine distemper virus (CDV) vaccination confers long-term protection against CDV reinfection. To investigate the utility of CDV as a polyvalent vaccine vector for Leishmania, we generated recombinant CDVs, based on an avirulent Yanaka strain, that expressed Leishmania antigens: LACK, TSA, or LmSTI1 (rCDV-LACK, rCDV-TSA, and rCDV-LmSTI1, respectively). Dogs immunized with rCDV-LACK were protected against challenge with lethal doses of virulent CDV, in the same way as the parental Yanaka strain. To evaluate the protective effects of the recombinant CDVs against cutaneous leishmaniasis in dogs,

Early T cell response in the central nervous system in canine distemper virus infection.

The initial demyelinating lesions in canine distemper virus (CDV) infection develop during a period of severe immunosuppression in the absence of inflammation. In vitro and in vivo studies suggest that early demyelination is due to directly virus-induced oligodendroglial changes. In the present spatiotemporal study in experimentally CDV-infected dogs we observed diffuse up-regulation of T cells throughout the central nervous system (CNS) and T cell invasion in early demyelinating lesions. Invasion of T cells in the CNS occurred despite severe immunosuppression and without any perivascular cuff

Canine distemper virus in sympatric carnivores of eastern Spain: A potential risk for reintroduction programs.

Canine distemper virus (CDV) is a highly infectious morbillivirus posing a significant threat to global carnivore biodiversity. While domestic dogs are primary reservoirs, CDV circulates among various free-ranging wildlife populations, suggesting complex maintenance mechanisms. We assessed CDV frequency of infection via RT-qPCR and serology in 106 free-ranging wild carnivores (families Canidae, Mustelidae, and Viverridae) collected opportunistically in the Valencian Community, Spain, between 2022 and 2025. A total of 212 tissue samples-comprising adult lung (n = 102) and brain (n = 104) tissue

Safety of and serological response to a new canine distemper-parvovirus combination vaccine in domestic ferrets.

BACKGROUND: Pet ferrets are typically vaccinated against distemper using a canine multivalent vaccine despite the lack of relevant safety or efficacy data. Here, we investigate the safety of a novel live canine parvovirus type 2c (CPV-2c) vaccine strain and the efficacy of the live Onderstepoort canine distemper virus (CDV) vaccine strain used in a new bivalent vaccine. METHODS: Following an overdose of the CPV-2c component to 16 ferrets, blood, faeces and various tissues were tested to investigate viral dissemination and shedding. Serum antibody concentrations were also measured. Long-term s

Evaluation of Selected Brain Damage Biomarkers in the Determination of Brain Damage in Dogs With Neurological Distemper.

BACKGROUND: Canine distemper is a disease with high morbidity and mortality in domestic and wild carnivores caused by Canine distemper virus (CDV). Respiratory, gastrointestinal, dermatological, ophthalmic, or neurological disorders occur in dogs with canine distemper. CDV replicates in the central nervous system and causes non-purulent encephalomyelitis. This causes damage to the brain and spinal cord. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to reveal brain damage caused by the canine distemper virus in dogs using selected brain damage biomarkers and to determine which of these biomarkers are d

Pathological Study of Demyelination with Cellular Reactions in the Cerebellum of Dogs Infected with Canine Distemper Virus.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between demyelination and cellular reactions in the cerebellum of Canine Distemper Virus (CDV)-infected dogs. We subdivided the disease staging by adding the degree of demyelination determined by Luxol Fast Blue staining to the previously reported disease staging from the acute stage to the chronic stage, and investigated the relationship between demyelination in the cerebellum and the number and histological changes in astroglia, microglia, and Purkinje cells in each stage. Reactions of astrocytes and microglia were observed at an earl

Evaluation of the humoral immune response induced by vaccination for canine distemper and parvovirus: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) and Canine Parvovirus (CPV) lead to infections with high mortality rates in dogs. These viruses affect unvaccinated dogs or dogs with incomplete vaccination protocols. Vaccination plays an important role in reducing death rates, preventing clinical cases and controlling the spread of virus However, the efficacy of vaccination might be affected by different factors including vaccine scheduling and the neutralization of the vaccine targets by maternal antibodies. In face of these factors, the main goals of this study are (i) to investigate the antibody re

An unusual presentation of canine distemper virus infection in a domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo).

A 4.5-year-old, male castrated ferret was examined with a 27-day history of severe pruritus, generalized erythema and scaling. Skin scrapings and a trichogram were negative for mites and dermatophyte organisms. A fungal culture of hair samples was negative. The ferret was treated presumptively for scabies and secondary bacterial and yeast infection with selamectin, enrofloxacin, fluconazole, diphenhydramine and a miconazole-chlorhexidine shampoo. The ferret showed mild improvement in clinical signs over the subsequent 3 weeks, but was inappetent and required supportive feeding and subcutaneous

Phenotypical characterization of T and B cell areas in lymphoid tissues of dogs with spontaneous distemper.

CD3, CD4, CD5, and CD8 antigen expression of T cells and IgG expression of B cells and canine distemper virus (CDV) antigen distribution were immunohistochemically examined in lymphoid tissues (lymph node, spleen, thymus, and tonsil) of control dogs and animals with spontaneous canine distemper. In addition, CNS tissue of all animals was studied for neuropathological changes and CDV antigen distribution. Based on the degree of depletion distemper dogs were classified into two groups. Group I represented animals with moderate to marked lymphoid depletion, while group II dogs displayed mild or n

Protection against lethal canine distemper virus infection by a dual epitope-targeting synthetic antibody.

Despite vaccine availability, the morbilliviruses measles virus and canine distemper virus (CDV) are still causing major health impairments in human and animal populations. Here, we identified two potent, neutralizing single domain antibodies directed against the tetrameric receptor binding (H) protein of CDV. Structural analyses spotlighted two vulnerable sites within the H protein. While the first overlaps with the receptor binding site, the second encompasses amino acid residues of two protomers located at the distal dimeric head interface, which supports distinct mechanisms of neutralizati

Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) in Grey Wolf (Canis lupus) in Fars Province of Iran.

Emerging and re-emerging viral diseases shared between wildlife and domestic animals are continually spreading to new geographic locations, influenced by human activities and environmental change. Canine distemper (CD) is probably one of the best examples of a disease that has been proved to be capable of compromising the conservation of several wild carnivore species. In this article, we describe a case report of CD in a grey wolf (Canis lupus) in Iran. A grey wolf was found in Fars Province close to Bamou national park. Clinical signs were characterized by neurologic signs, muscle twitching,

CANINE DISTEMPER VIRUS IN THE SEA OTTER (ENHYDRA LUTRIS) POPULATION IN WASHINGTON STATE, USA.

Before 2001, all serosurveys for morbilliviruses in sea otters (Enhydra lutris) in California, Washington, and Alaska, US, documented a 0% seroprevalence. The first published serologic detections of morbillivirus in sea otters occurred in 2001-02 in live-captured Washington sea otters, with a documented 80% seroprevalence. We conducted a retrospective study of sea otter cases from 1989 to 2010 compiled at the US Geological Survey, National Wildlife Health Center to identify cases of morbilliviral disease in Washington sea otters and to characterize the disease using immunohistochemistry, rever

Canine and Phocine Distemper Viruses: Global Spread and Genetic Basis of Jumping Species Barriers.

Canine distemper virus (CDV) and phocine distemper (PDV) are closely-related members of the Paramyxoviridae family, genus morbillivirus, in the order Mononegavirales. CDV has a broad host range among carnivores. PDV is thought to be derived from CDV through contact between terrestrial carnivores and seals. PDV has caused extensive mortality in Atlantic seals and other marine mammals, and more recently has spread to the North Pacific Ocean. CDV also infects marine carnivores, and there is evidence of morbillivirus infection of seals and other species in Antarctica. Recently, CDV has spread to f

EVIDENCE OF TWO COCIRCULATING CANINE DISTEMPER VIRUS STRAINS IN MESOCARNIVORES FROM NORTHERN COLORADO, USA.

Canine distemper virus (CDV) is a highly contagious pathogen that principally infects wildlife and domestic carnivores. Peridomestic species such as raccoons ( Procyon lotor) experience outbreaks with high mortality. Clinical signs of infection include anorexia, fever, respiratory infection, and neurologic complications. Although not zoonotic, CDV poses a high risk to unvaccinated domestic animals and the conservation of endangered species. During 2013-16, we opportunistically collected wild and domestic carnivore specimens through a rabies surveillance program in northern Colorado, US. Brains

Genotypic lineages and restriction fragment length polymorphism of canine distemper virus isolates in Thailand.

Canine distemper virus (CDV) is known to cause multisystemic disease in all families of terrestrial carnivores. Attenuated live vaccines have been used to control CDV in a variety of species for many decades, yet a number of CDV infections in vaccinated dogs are still observed. The aims of this study were to investigate the genetic diversity of CDV lineages based on phosphoprotein (P), hemagglutinin (H) and fusion protein (F) genes and to develop the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) technique for effective differentiation among individual wild-type and vaccine lineages in Thaila
