Current understanding of multiple risk factors as the metabolic syndrome: distillation or deconstruction.

The "metabolic syndrome" is a new term that defines the clustering of vascular risk factors, such as hyperlipidemia, obesity, elevated blood pressure, and elevated blood glucose. Controversy exists regarding the use of the term, which raises the question of whether the unique grouping of vascular risk factors adds more clinical risk then the additive effect of multiple risk factors viewed as separate but important entities. Whatever the answer, the metabolic syndrome constitutes a major public health problem with over 47 million persons in the United States meeting criteria for the metabolic s

Dual-Pathway Catalytic Proton Exchange in Water Distillation Enables Record Detritiation of Tritiated Water.

Tritiated water (HTO) is a major radioactive liquid effluent from nuclear facilities and is commonly discharged into aquatic environments because of the limited availability of effective detritiation technologies. Water distillation currently remains the only practically scalable method for detritiation, yet its efficiency is fundamentally constrained by conventional packings governed solely by gas-liquid equilibrium. Here we report a distillation packing modified with an amino-functionalized metal-organic framework, NH2-MIL-101(Cr), which achieves a record separation efficiency of 42.5 theore

Near real-time multi-class segmentation for intravascular optical coherence tomography using knowledge distillation.

AIMS: Intravascular optical coherence tomography (OCT) enables high-resolution imaging of the coronary vessel wall, but manual image interpretation is time-consuming and existing automated approaches often require high computational resources and exhibit slow inference times, limiting clinical use. We developed OCT-AID-lite, a neural network for near-real-time multi-class OCT segmentation leveraging knowledge distillation and semi-supervised learning to accelerate inference while maintaining segmentation accuracy. METHODS AND RESULTS: A state-of-the-art model (OCT-AID) guided a compact U-Net-

Reflectance Prediction-Based Knowledge Distillation for Robust 3D Object Detection in Compressed Point Clouds.

Regarding intelligent transportation systems, low-bitrate transmission via lossy point cloud compression is vital for facilitating real-time collaborative perception among connected agents, such as vehicles and infrastructures, under restricted bandwidth. In existing compression transmission systems, the sender lossily compresses point coordinates and reflectance to generate a transmission code stream, which faces transmission burdens from reflectance encoding and limited detection robustness due to information loss. To address these issues, this paper proposes a 3D object detection framework

CoreKD: A Context-Aware Local Region Structural Contrastive Knowledge Distillation Framework for Object Detection.

Knowledge distillation (KD) aims to transfer knowledge from a cumbersome teacher to a lightweight student, thereby reducing overall model complexity without sacrificing performance. Current methods tend to focus excessively on pixel-level knowledge transfer while overlooking localized and contextual information. To address this, we propose a novel context-aware local region structural contrastive knowledge distillation framework (CoreKD) for object detection tasks. Specifically, we introduce a patch-based semantic structural distillation (PSD) method, facilitating efficient localized valuable

Lightweight Semantic Perception from UAV-Borne Visual Sensors via Conflict-Suppressed Heterogeneous Expert Distillation.

UAV-borne visual sensors provide high-resolution aerial observations for low-altitude scene understanding, urban monitoring, traffic observation, emergency inspection, and infrastructure assessment. However, semantic perception from UAV visual sensor data remains challenging because aerial images often contain dense small objects, elongated road structures, fragmented boundaries, scale variations caused by flight-altitude changes, oblique viewpoints, and strict onboard or edge computational constraints. To address these challenges, this paper proposes MEKD-UAVSeg, a lightweight semantic percep

Microbial diversity and production of milk spirit using traditional Buryat fermentation and distillation technologies.

Distilled fermented milk beverages are rare in food technology, despite the global prevalence of plant-based spirits. Currently, the production of distilled strong alcoholic beverages from fermented milk using traditional technologies is known only among Mongolic-speaking peoples and their Siberian neighbors. This study provides the first interdisciplinary analysis of darasun, a traditional Buryat spirit made from fermented milk beverage khurenge in Southern Siberia. Archival research shows deep historical roots of darasun dating back to the 13th-14th centuries in the period of the Mongol Empi

Knowledge distillation for sEMG-based gesture recognition: enhancing wearable HMI systems with lightweight models.

Objective. Gesture recognition using surface electromyography (sEMG) is a promising technology for wearable human-machine interaction systems. However, sEMG-based gesture classification models often suffer from performance degradation in cross-user scenarios due to the variability in individual physiological signals. To address this issue, large-scale deep learning algorithms with a great amount of parameters are employed to enhance model generalization and improve recognition performance across different users. However, the use of deep learning models on wearable devices is challenging due to

Biologically Inspired Medical Multi-Modal Dataset Distillation via Contrast-Aware Alignment and Memory Compression.

Multi-modal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) provides complementary information for clinical diagnosis, yet its large-scale storage, privacy sensitivity, and annotation cost pose significant challenges. Inspired by biological vision systems, which integrate multi-sensory inputs and compress experiences into compact memory representations, we propose a bio-inspired framework termed Contrast-Guided Multi-modal Dataset Distillation (CGMDD). In biological perception, different sensory channels observe the same environment from complementary perspectives, while hierarchical neural processing ensure

Knowledge Distillation and Explainability Analysis for Lightweight Retinal Disease Classification Using MultiEYE Fundus Images.

Background/Objectives: Class imbalance and probabilistic prediction quality are important considerations in lightweight retinal classification. We evaluated whether knowledge distillation (KD) from a ConvNeXtV2-Base teacher improved an EfficientNet-B0 student in nine-class MultiEYE fundus classification. Methods: Exact-content screening quarantined 131 of 58,036 records because of exact-content duplication or label conflicts. Six prespecified seeds were evaluated in no-KD, label-smoothing, and KD arms (18 runs) under matched training conditions. Within the controlled experiment, TEST data were

Surface Modification of PVDF Membranes for Treating Produced Waters by Direct Contact Membrane Distillation.

Direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) has been conducted to treat hydraulic fracturing-produced water using polyvinylidenedifluoride (PVDF) membranes. Tailoring the surface properties of the membrane is critical in order to reduce the rate of adsorption of dissolved organic species as well as mineral salts. The PVDF membranes have been modified by grafting zwitterion and polyionic liquid-based polymer chains. In addition, surface oxidation of the PVDF membrane has been conducted using KMnO₄ and NaOH. Surface modification conditions were chosen in order to minimize the decrease in contact

Analysis for total sulfite in foods by using rapid distillation followed by redox titration.

A rapid and accurate analysis for total sulfite as sulfur dioxide has been developed for foods and food products. The method, which combines a selective distillation cleanup procedure with the selective redox titration of sulfite ion by iodine, has been applied to a variety of foods and food products over a period of time with no significant interference encountered in any matrixes other than garlic and leeks. For the foods analyzed, the method typically shows a detection limit of 10 ppm, a relative standard deviation of 7.5% (compared with 10.4% for similar matrixes by the Monier-Williams met

Towards Medical Image Dataset Distillation: A Progressive Trajectory Matching and Dynamic Diversity Enhancing Method.

Sharing medical image sets is essential yet challenging due to limited resource and strict regulatory, which significantly hinder the development of medical foundation models and the transfer of medical domain knowledge. In this paper, we utilize medical image dataset distillation techniques to enable effective model construction and knowledge transfer without requiring downstream users to directly access the original data. Trajectory matching has become the mainstream distillation technique, yet our empirical findings on medical image datasets reveal two critical phenomena: instability of dis

Drug-target interaction (DTI) prediction plays a pivotal role in drug discovery and drug repurposing, yet current deep learning approaches still suffer from limitations in multimodal fusion, fine-grained cross-modal interaction modeling, nonlinear representation learning, and inductive generalization. To overcome these issues, we develop FKAN-MoCBDTI, a multimodal framework that unifies heterogeneous feature extraction, collaborative bilinear attention, Fourier Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks (FKAN), teacher-student knowledge distillation and conditional domain adversarial learning (CDAN).
