The Kölliker-Fuse nucleus: a review of animal studies and the implications for cranial nerve function in humans.

To review the scientific literature on the relationship between Kölliker-Fuse nucleus (KF) and cranial nerve function in animal models, with view to evaluating the potential role of KF maturation in explaining age-related normal physiologic parameters and developmental and acquired impairment of cranial nerve function in humans. Medical databases (Medline and PubMed). Studies investigating evidence of KF activity responsible for a specific cranial nerve function that were based on manipulation of KF activity or the use of neural markers were included. Twenty studies were identified that involv

[Sports and electrocardiograms].

The electrocardiographic examination in sports is performed as a screening procedure for athletes with complaints of cardiac symptoms. The resting 12-lead electrocardiogram(ECG) is the first step and the 2nd step is an exercise ECG and an ambulatory ECG. To evaluate the ECG findings of athletes, it is important to discriminate between an athletic heart and a diseased heart, because an athletic heart is often associated with ECG findings which are difficult to discriminate from those of a diseased heart. The bradycardic arrhythmia, high voltage and ST-T changes are characteristic of the athleti

High density probes reveal medullary seizure and rapid medullary shutdown in a model of fatal apnea in seizure.

OBJECTIVE: Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is suggested to be a cardiorespiratory collapse that occurs shortly after a seizure. The impacts of seizure on medullary respiratory control remain poorly understood. Prior work in rats suggests that reflexive apneas are highly fatal during seizure but well tolerated otherwise. These reflexes share network connectivity in the medulla, particularly the caudal solitary nucleus (NTS) and ventral respiratory column (VRC), and possibly other intermediate structures. We sought to observe the activity in these regions in fatal ictal apneas. METH

Molecularly defined circuits for cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary control.

The sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems regulate the activities of internal organs1, but the molecular and functional diversity of their constituent neurons and circuits remains largely unknown. Here we use retrograde neuronal tracing, single-cell RNA sequencing, optogenetics and physiological experiments to dissect the cardiac parasympathetic control circuit in mice. We show that cardiac-innervating neurons in the brainstem nucleus ambiguus (Amb) are comprised of two molecularly, anatomically and functionally distinct subtypes. The first, which we call ambiguus cardiovascular (ACV

The Connection of Life with Respiration: Edmund Goodwyn's unexplored treasure of cardiopulmonary physiology.

The advent of artificial ventilation was largely sparked by the popular belief that drowning and other causes of asphyxia could induce death-like states known as suspended animation. While the mystical nature of such states befuddled some physicians into the early 1900s, an English medical student by the name of Edmund Goodwyn (1756-1829) published a thesis in 1786, which demonstrated that suspended animation was simply the physical manifestation of extreme hypoxia. Goodwyn's work advanced one of the earliest arguments in favor of artificial ventilation for the treatment of asphyxia over alter

Effects of Adding Facial Immersion to Chest-Level Water Immersion on Vagally-Mediated Heart Rate Variability.

Recent studies have shown that both facial immersion and head-out water immersion up to the chest (HOIC) positively influence cardiac vagal activity, as indexed non-invasively through vagally mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV). While facial immersion activates the diving reflex, HOIC induces effects via hydrostatic pressure, each engaging distinct physiological mechanisms. This study aims to investigate whether combining facial immersion with HOIC results in an additional increase in vmHRV. In total, the vmHRV [log10RMSSD] of 37 participants (14 females, Mage = 23.8; SDage = 4.4 years) wa

Treatment and prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common serious, acquired gastrointestinal disorder in the newborn infant. Although many variables are associated with development of NEC, only prematurity has been consistently identified in case-controlled studies. Traditionally, the diving seal reflex has been invoked as the mechanism responsible for ischaemic injury and necrosis. Intestinal ischaemia is likely to be the final common pathway in NEC; however, it is due to the release of vasoconstricting substances, such as platelet activating factor, rather than perinatal asphyxia. Physiological aspects of freezing behaviour in willow ptarmigan hens.

When threatened, wild willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus lagopus) hens displayed freezing behaviour, i.e. motionless, crouched with head down and eyes open. But while non-incubating hens showed increased heart (HR) (from 229 +/- 18 to 254 +/- 33 beats min-1) and ventilation rates (VR) (from 25 +/- 2 to 31 +/- 4 breaths min-1), incubating hens showed bradycardia (from 208 +/- 40 to 102 +/- 13 beats min-1) and reduced VR (from 25 +/- 2 to 10 +/- 2 breaths min-1), which could be maintained for as long as 20 min. The bradycardia response became stronger as hatching approached. The bradycardia perio

Hepatic Transplantation Raises Concern for Vascular Infrastructure Compromise: A Case Study of Debilitating Arteriovenous Malformation.

The post-operative realm for hepatic transplant patients presents many challenges, but of them all, we take a deeper dive into an increased risk of associated cerebrovascular events. Cerebrovascular diseases, such as cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM), are a leading cause of death following a liver transplant. We present a unique case of a liver transplant patient who presented with no brainstem reflexes three months into the post-transplant period. Imaging studies revealed a ruptured AVM within the foramen magnum and cervicomedullary junction, as well as substantial cerebral hemorrhage

Trigeminal nerve stimulation: a current state-of-the-art review.

Nearly 5 decades ago, the effect of trigeminal nerve stimulation (TNS) on cerebral blood flow was observed for the first time. This implication directly led to further investigations and TNS' success as a therapeutic intervention. Possessing unique connections with key brain and brainstem regions, TNS has been observed to modulate cerebral vasodilation, brain metabolism, cerebral autoregulation, cerebral and systemic inflammation, and the autonomic nervous system. The unique range of effects make it a prime therapeutic modality and have led to its clinical usage in chronic conditions such as m

Bradycardic responses to vagally mediated bedside maneuvers in healthy volunteers.

PURPOSE: To determine the relative potency in healthy individuals of the vagally mediated reflexes used clinically to inhibit sinoatrial and atrioventricular node function. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twenty healthy volunteers with no history of heart disease performed face immersion in cold water and the Valsalva maneuver twice, to maximum endurance and to the subjective point of first discomfort, and face immersion in warm water and the Müller maneuver to maximum endurance only. Right and left carotid massage and left, right, and bilateral eyeball compression were each performed for 15 seconds. C

Supraventricular tachycardia in the neonate and infant.

Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is the most common sustained arrhythmia to present in the neonatal and infancy age group. Predisposing factors (congenital heart disease, drug administration, illness and fever) occur only in 15% of infants. The presentation of SVT in the neonate is frequently subtle, and may include pallor, cyanosis, restlessness, irritability, feeding difficulty, tachypnea, diaphoresis and grunting. Congestive heart failure is more common in infants under 4 months of age (35% incidence). Age-related differences in the distribution of SVT mechanisms occur in different age gr

Baroreflex control of arterial blood pressure during involuntary diving in ducks (Anas platyrhynchos var.).

The dynamic role of arterial baroreceptors in control of mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), cardiac output (CO), hindlimb vascular (HLVR) and total peripheral (TPR) resistance responses to forced dives was investigated in acutely and chronically barodenervated ducks. To activate the baroreflex, the proximal end of one aortic nerve was stimulated electrically with bipolar electrodes that had been implanted under pentobarbital sodium anesthesia. Predive nerve stimulation caused CO to fall (by reducing HR; stroke volume remained constant), producing a decrease in MAP to half the

Multiorgan dysfunction in infants with post-asphyxial hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND: Multiorgan dysfunction (MOD) is one of four consensus based criteria for the diagnosis of intrapartum asphyxia. The theoretical concept behind MOD is the diving reflex (conservation of blood flow to vital organs at the cost of non-vital organs). OBJECTIVES: To assess the patterns of involvement of each major organ/system and combinations of involvement in infants with post-asphyxial hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE), and to describe this in relation to long term outcome. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Regional tertiary neonatal intensive care unit at the Hospi

Sex differences in ventricular repolarization during trigeminal nerve stimulation: insights into QT/RR hysteresis.

Cardiac repolarization (i.e., QT interval) is inversely related to heart rate (HR). However, during diving-induced bradycardia, the QT response is delayed, a phenomenon known as QT/RR hysteresis, possibly due to autonomic coactivation. Although women exhibit longer QT intervals than men, sex differences in QT/RR hysteresis remain poorly explored. This study investigated sex differences in the relationship between QT interval and HR changes during trigeminal nerve stimulation (TGS), a controlled activation of diving bradycardia. Thirty-four healthy subjects (17 women, 22 ± 2 yr) underwent 2-min

Noninvasive methods to study autonomic nervous control of circulation.

The major findings and conclusions of this study are the following: 1. Indirect evidence suggested that nervous afferentation from the cutaneous thermoreceptors and nervous efferentation to the skin blood vessels mediated the 0.01-0.10 Hz thermally entrained response of the oscillations of the forearm skin blood flow in supine and upright subjects. 2. Postural stimulation decreased skin blood flow and oscillations of skin blood flow. The 0.10 Hz thermal stimulation interacted with the postural stimulation by increasing the oscillations of skin blood flow from sitting to standing position on th
