Stress modulates a broad range of brain functions, including the visual system. However, the specific neural mechanisms by which stress regulates function and plasticity in the adult visual system remain unclear. This study demonstrates that repeated restraint stress selectively enhances ocular dominance plasticity (ODP) in the primary visual cortex (V1) of adult mice. This stress-induced reinstatement of ODP depends on noradrenergic (NE) signaling. Using anterograde and retrograde neural tracing, we identified a specific locus coeruleus (LC)-V1 projection. Chemogenetic inhibition of this path

There is growing evidence that deficits in neuronal plasticity underlie the cognitive problems seen in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). However, the mechanisms behind these deficits are not clear. Here we test the effects of early alcohol exposure on ocular dominance plasticity (ODP) in mice and the reversibility of these effects by phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors. Mouse pups were exposed to 5 g/kg of 25% ethanol i.p. on postnatal days (P) 5, 7 and 9. This type of alcohol exposure mimics binge drinking during the third trimester equivalent of human gestation. To assess ocular domina

We have previously shown that the protein kinase A (PKA) inhibitor, 8-chloroadenosine-3',5'-monophosphorothioate (Rp-8-Cl-cAMPS), abolishes ocular dominance plasticity in the cat visual cortex. Here we investigate the effect of this inhibitor on orientation selectivity. The inhibitor reduces orientation selectivity in monocularly deprived animals but not in normal animals. In other words, PKA inhibitors by themselves do not affect orientation selectivity, nor does monocular deprivation by itself, but monocular deprivation in combination with a PKA inhibitor does affect orientation selectivity.

The developing cerebral cortex contains a distinct class of cells, subplate neurons, which form one of the first functional cortical circuits. Subplate neurons reside in the cortical white matter, receive thalamic inputs and project into the developing cortical plate, mostly to layer 4. Subplate neurons are present at key time points during development. Removal of subplate neurons profoundly affects cortical development. Subplate removal in visual cortex prevents the maturation of thalamocortical synapse, the maturation of inhibition in layer 4, the development of orientation selective respons

Although the effects of visual deprivation on the development of ocular dominance columns have been well described in primates, nothing is known in primates about the impact of the deprivation on the axonal profiles that make up the ocular dominance columns. We now show that the effects of monocular deprivation on the morphology of geniculostriate axons involve not only shifts in terminal arbor sizes, much as would be expected from the ocular dominance data, but also changes in the proliferation of terminal arbor branches. In macaque monkeys reared from birth with unilateral lens removal (apha

Since the discovery of ocular dominance plasticity, neuroscientists have understood that changes in visual experience during a discrete developmental time, the critical period, trigger robust changes in the visual cortex. State-of-the-art tools used to probe connectivity with cell-type-specific resolution have expanded the understanding of circuit changes underlying experience-dependent plasticity. Here, we review the visual circuitry of the mouse, describing projections from retina to thalamus, between thalamus and cortex, and within cortex. We discuss how visual circuit development leads to

The binocular depth of focus of monovision wearers was compared to the sum of the two monocularly determined depths of focus. Observers fell into three groups based upon ocular sighting dominance. Complete binocular summation of the monocular depths of focus was observed in subjects without a preferred fixating eye. Subjects who preferred to fixate with one eye had difficulty suppressing blur of that eye while the binocular target was within the depth of focus of the nonpreferred eye. A third group showed partial summation of the two monocular depths of focus. Similar patterns of accommodative

Ocular misalignment and nystagmus result in the visual symptoms of binocular diplopia and oscillopsia, and are frequently encountered in neurological practice. Correct localization of the underlying problem is the first step to accurate diagnosis, and requires a systematic approach and knowledge of the ocular motor pathways and actions of the extraocular muscles. This article contains three segments: The first outlines the diagnostic approach with attention to fine historical and examination details helpful in localization; the second describes common localizations of diplopia including extrao

Monocular deprivation (MD) has much more rapid and severe effects on the ocular dominance of neurons in the primary visual cortex (V1) than does binocular deprivation. This finding underlies the widely held hypothesis that the developmental plasticity of ocular dominance reflects competitive interactions for synaptic space between inputs from the two eyes. According to this view, the relative levels of evoked activity in afferents representing the two eyes determine functional changes in response to altered visual experience. However, if the deprived eye of a monocularly deprived kitten is sim

Amyloid-β (Aβ)-induced changes in synaptic function in experimental models of Alzheimer's disease (AD) suggest that Aβ generation and accumulation may affect fundamental mechanisms of synaptic plasticity. To test this hypothesis, we examined the effect of APP overexpression on a well characterized, in vivo, developmental model of systems-level plasticity, ocular dominance plasticity. Following monocular visual deprivation during the critical period, mice that express mutant alleles of amyloid precursor protein (APPswe) and Presenilin1 (PS1dE9), as well as mice that express APPswe alone, lack o

Neural activity is critical for sculpting the intricate circuits of the nervous system from initially imprecise neuronal connections. Disrupting the formation of these precise circuits may underlie many common neurodevelopmental disorders, ranging from subtle learning disorders to pervasive developmental delay. The necessity for sensory-driven activity has been widely recognized as crucial for infant brain development. Recent experiments in neurobiology now point to a similar requirement for endogenous neural activity generated by the nervous system itself before sensory input is available. He

1. Vision was investigated with behavioural and electrophysiological techniques in three groups of cats: (a) two normally raised kittens in which one eye was rotated at an age of 3 months, (b) three adult cats in which one eye had been rotated and the other closed 6 months prior to recording, (c) two adult cats in which first one eye had been rotated and the other closed and subsequently, after one year, the rotated eye had been closed and the normal eye re-opened. The latter two cats were investigated 6 and 12 months after reverse suture, respectively. All adult cats were at least 2 years old

Experience is required for the shaping and refinement of developing neural circuits during well defined periods of early postnatal development called critical periods. Many studies in the visual cortex have shown that intracortical GABAergic circuitry plays a crucial role in defining the time course of the critical period for ocular dominance plasticity. With the end of the critical period, neural plasticity wanes and recovery from the effects of visual defects on visual acuity (amblyopia) or binocularity is much reduced or absent. Recent results pointed out that intracortical inhibition is a

Several proteins have their normal patterns of distributions altered by monocular visual deprivation. We studied the distribution of the calcium-binding proteins calbindin-28kD (Cb) and parvalbumin (Pv) in V1 in normal adult Cebus apella monkeys and in monkeys with monocular retinal lesions. In normal monkeys, the interblobs regions in layers 2/3 and the layer 4B are intensely labeled for Cb, while Pv reaction showed a complementary labeling pattern with a stronger staining in layers 4A, 4C and in the blob regions in layers 2/3. In monkeys with monocular retinal lesion, the laminar distributio

BACKGROUND: Many observers perceive a horizontal offset between a stereoscopically viewed object and a reference object in the fixation plane, although both objects are presented along a single line that projects through the midpoint between both eyes. These observers weigh one eye more than the other when determining the visual directions of stereo objects. This unequal weighting has been called ocular prevalence. We considered that ocular prevalence might be asymmetric, that is, different for crossed and uncrossed stereo disparities.
METHODS: We examined 11 subjects with normal eyes and a s

A methodology was developed to determine the proportion of acetyl- (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) in the albino and pigmented rabbit eye. It was found that BuChE contributed over 75% of the cholinesterase activity in all the ocular tissues but the corneal epithelium of the albino rabbit. This esterase was principally responsible for the parabolic chain length dependence of ocular hydrolysis of model naphthyl ester prodrugs reported previously. In contrast, when incubated with AChE, the rate of hydrolysis of these esters decreased monotonically with increasing ester chain length. Toge

OBJECTIVES: Occipital petalia is an anatomic description where one of the occipital lobes protrudes towards the contralateral side. Transverse sinus (TS) asymmetry might cause diagnostic challenges with regards to thrombotic or compressive pathologies involving these sinuses. In this study, we investigated the association between occipital petalia and TS hypoplasia on MRI studies.
METHODS: In 264 subjects with no neurological complaints, occipital bending was determined on T1-weighted images based on the angulation of interhemispheric fissure between occipital lobes with respect to an imagina
