Experience with Selective Testing of Plasmodium Parasites in Swiss Blood Donors.

Transmission of malaria by blood transfusion is rare in non-endemic countries but can lead to serious complications in blood recipients. Increasing travel to and immigration from regions at risk for tropical diseases poses a challenge to blood donation services, which are striving to reduce the number of blood donor deferrals while ensuring a high level of blood safety. National guidelines of the Blood Transfusion Service of the Swiss Red Cross demand that donors at risk are serologically tested for malaria antibodies. Here, we summarize the numbers of malaria tests performed and the results o

Validation of KDRI/KDPI for the selection of expanded criteria kidney donors.

INTRODUCTION: KDRI / KDPI are tools use in kidney donor evaluation. It has been proposed as a substitute of, or complementary to preimplantation renal biopsy. These scores has not been validated in Spain. OBJECTIVE: 1) To investigate the concordance between KDPI and histological scores (preimplantation renal biopsy) and 2) To assess the relationship between KDRI, KDPI and histological score on graft survival in the expanded criteria donors group. METHODOLOGY: Retrospective cohort study from 1 January 1998 until 31 December 2010. RESULTS: During the study 120 donors were recruited, that resu

Validation of selected donor-screening questions: structure, content, and comprehension.

BACKGROUND: Donor questioning is an integral component of blood safety, designed to identify and interdict donors considered to be at elevated risk of transfusion-transmissible infection. Questions are frequently added to this screening procedure, but they are rarely evaluated for comprehension. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Seven American Red Cross blood donor history questions were selected for evaluation. Focus groups were conducted using individuals from high school/college, church, business, and other sources, who had never donated blood. Both sexes and various age and racial groups were rep

Interactions between science, government and media on selection and testing of donors.

The international media attention to "bad blood" has fueled governmental action in countries around the world. Donor selection criteria continue to expand, focusing most recently on the possibility of exclusion due to intranasal cocaine use and, in the US, due to incarceration for more than 72 hours. As newer methods of testing evolve, more deferrals will occur due to improved testing. An emerging area of concern is the non-standardized notification of donors who are ineligible to donate and lack of a centralized listing of such deferred donors. Because of the consequences to recipients, impro

Optimizing donor fascicle selection in Oberlin's procedure: A retrospective review of anatomical variability using intraoperative neuromonitoring.

BACKGROUND: Transfer of the fascicle carrying the flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) branch of the ulnar nerve (UN) to the biceps/brachialis muscle branch of the musculocutaneous nerve (Oberlin's procedure), is a mainstay technique for elbow flexion restoration in patients with upper brachial plexus injury. Despite its widespread use, there are few studies regarding the anatomic location of the donor fascicle for Oberlin's procedure. Our report aims to analyze the anatomical variability of this fascicle within the UN, while obtaining quantifiable, objective data with intraoperative neuromonitoring (IO

A high resolution HLA class I and class II matching method for bone marrow donor selection.

HLA matching in bone marrow transplantation has an important role in determining successful outcome. However HLA typing of both potential related and unrelated donors can be both time-consuming and laborious, and does not always resolve accurately the true level of histocompatibility. We have utilised a method, reference strand mediated conformation analysis (RSCA), which is technically simple and allows high resolution matching for all HLA loci, for the typing of 48 patients and their potential 120 donors. The results indicate that RSCA can detect many mismatches that are not routinely identi

Prevalence of select micronutrient deficiencies in Indian voluntary blood donors.

INTRODUCTION: Frequent and regular blood donation is associated with iron deficiency and iron depletion in apparently healthy individuals. However, besides iron, water-soluble vitamins and folate play a significant role in regulating hemoglobin erythropoiesis. Hence, the determination of the prevalence of these supplementary micronutrient deficiencies in regular blood donors can contribute as an additional blood donor safety measure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study spanning from 2014 to 2020, we assessed ferritin, folate, and Vitamin B12 status in a total of 1722 healthy voluntary Indian

Reinnervation with Selective Nerve Grafting from Multiple Donor Nerves.

Nerve substitution is an important tool in facial reanimation. The goal is to reinnervate the distal facial nerve and musculature using an alternative cranial nerve in order to achieve facial movement, symmetry, and tone. Multiple donor nerves have been used for nerve transfer procedures, the most common being hypoglossal, masseteric, and cross-facial nerve graft. Each donor nerve has its advantages and disadvantages. Multiinnervation uses the use of multiple donor nerves in order to leverage the benefits while balancing the pitfalls of each nerve. The nerve transfer depends on the type of ner

Selection strategies for newly registered blood donors in European countries.

BACKGROUND: Two selection strategies for newly-registered blood donors are available: a single-visit selection called the standard selection procedure (SSP), and a two-stage selection named predonation and donation screening (PDS). This study reviews the selection strategies for newly-registered donors currently applied in European countries. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We collected data on donor selection procedures, blood donation, laboratory screening and HIV, HCV and HBV positive donors/donations from 2010 to 2013 in 30 European countries by using questionnaires. We grouped the countries accord

Noncompliance to blood donor selection criteria by men who have sex with men - Complidon 2017, France.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In France, blood donation deferral for men who have sex with men (MSM) was reduced from permanent to 12 months in July 2016. Assessing noncompliance (rate and reasons) with this criterion is important to maintain a high level of viral safety in blood products. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An anonymous online survey (Complidon) of a sample of blood donors was conducted in 2017. Data were post-stratified to be representative of all those who donated blood between July 2016 and December 2017. A multivariable analysis was performed to assess factors associated with noncomplia

Molecular typing shows a high level of HLA class I incompatibility in serologically well matched donor/patient pairs: implications for unrelated bone marrow donor selection.

In comparison with HLA-matched sibling bone marrow transplants, unrelated donor transplants are associated with increased graft-versus-host disease and graft failure. This is likely in part due to HLA incompatibilities not identified by current matching strategies. High resolution DNA-based typing methods for HLA class II loci have improved donor selection and treatment outcome in unrelated donor bone marrow transplantation. By using DNA-based typing methods for HLA-A and -B on a cohort of 100 potential bone marrow donor/patient pairs, we find that serological typing for HLA class I is limited

Approaches to managing volunteer marrow donor registry HLA data. Algorithms for directing donor center-initiated HLA-DR typing of selected donors.

The German bone marrow donor center (DKMS) hasrecruited over 732 500 donors during the first 9 years of its existence. Initially, donors were typed for HLA-A and B, and DR typing was only done on request for a patient-initiated search. In 1994, a project was started which led to the donor center-initiated DR typing (DCI-DRT) of >35,000 donors. These donors were selected by donor-specific criteria (age, sex, height and weight) and according to HLA-A and B phenotypes. The latter was done to avoid unnecessary DR typing of the most common A, B phenotypes With a follow up of >6 years, this strategy

The demographic and serological characteristics of COVID-19 convalescent plasma donors: Identification of basic criteria for optimal donor selection.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Convalescent plasma has attracted significant attention as a therapeutic option against infectious agents for more than a century. In March 2020, the use of Convalescent COVID-19 plasma (CCP) as a new research drug for COVID-19 treatment was approved by the FDA. The development of SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies following infection or vaccination is likely to be essential to provide adequate immunity for the population to halt the COVID19 pandemic. This study aimed to identify the criteria that would be used to determine the most appropriate CCP donors with the highest eff

Algorithm for recall of HIV reactive Indian blood donors by sequential immunoassays enables selective donor referral for counseling.

BACKGROUND: HIV/AIDS pandemic brought into focus the importance of safe blood donor pool. AIMS: To analyze true seroprevalence of HIV infection in our blood donors and devise an algorithm for donor recall avoiding unnecessary referrals to voluntary counseling and testing centre (VCTC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: 39,784 blood units were screened for anti-HIV 1/2 using ELISA immunoassay (IA-1). Samples which were repeat reactive on IA-1 were further tested using two different immunoassays (IA-2 and IA-3) and Western blot (WB). Based on results of these sequential IAs and WB, an algorithm for recal

SOHO State of the Art Updates and Next Questions | Current Status and Future Directions of Donor Selection.

The landscape of HLA matching in hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is continuously advancing, introducing more nuanced criteria beyond traditional 10/10 HLA-A, -B, -C, and -DRB1 allele matching. For 10/10 matched donors, prioritizing a donor with a "core" permissive HLA-DPB1 mismatch is recommended over "noncore" permissive mismatches, with nonpermissive mismatches being the least prefered. In the one-antigen mismatched setting (7/8 HLA-matched), HLA-C matching, particularly avoiding high-expression mismatches at residues 116 or 77/80, is preferred over HLA-A or HLA-B mismatches. HLA B-

Impacts of cigarette smoking on blood circulation: do we need a new approach to blood donor selection?

Smoking is a major public health problem and is considered the leading cause of preventable death worldwide. Gas-phase smoke carries bioactive substances and toxic compounds, affecting human health and reducing life spans. The negative effects of smoking on red blood cell (RBC) quality include destroying RBCs and increasing carboxy hemoglobin (COHb). Smoking increases the concentrations of heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in the blood. Moreover, tobacco smoking has been found to be associated with heightened platelet (PLT)-dependent thrombin level which will induce a prothrombot

Proposal for new selection criteria considering pre-transplant muscularity and visceral adiposity in living donor liver transplantation.

BACKGROUND: The significance of pre-operative body composition has recently attracted much attention in various diseases. However, cut-off values for these parameters remain undetermined, and these factors are not currently included in selection criteria for recipients of living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). METHODS: Using computed tomography of 657 donors for LDLT, skeletal muscle mass, muscle quality, and visceral adiposity were evaluated by using skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), intramuscular adipose tissue content (IMAC), and visceral-to-subcutaneous adipose tissue area ratio (VSR)
