[Global eradication of dracunculiasis is a reality nowadays].

Global efforts to eradicate dracunculiasis have continued to progress with only 542 cases reported in 2012 versus almost 1 million cases in the 1980s when the initiative was launched. The disease is still endemic, but in only four countries: South Sudan (541 cases), Chad (10 cases), Mali (4 cases), and Ethiopia (4 cases). The International Commission for the Certification of Dracunculiasis Eradication declared that 180 countries were free of the disease by 2013. Dracunculiasis was first eradicated in the former USSR in 1931 when its last case was registered due to the successful implementation…

An ancient scourge: the end of dracunculiasis in Egypt.

This paper addresses the question of when guinea worm disease was last found in Egypt, and how written sources from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries which mention the disease should be evaluated. This enquiry is relevant to the global eradication campaign now in progress, and the need for countries in which dracunculiasis was once present to prepare a certification of eradication. Sudan, the country which has the largest number of cases today, is Egypt's southern neighbour. Because of the nature of the disease (in endemic areas it is most common among poor, rural people), it may not have…

No transmission of dracunculiasis in Egypt for two centuries.

Despite occasional assertions to the contrary, no convincing evidence has been found of guinea-worm disease (dracunculiasis) being transmitted in humans in Egypt during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The confusion appears to be caused mainly by imported cases and the incidence of the disease in animals.

Dracunculiasis: an approach to hasten worm expulsion.

Twenty patients with Guinea worm disease having a total of 29 emerging worms in a rural village of North West Frontier Province, were put on a 5-day course of antibiotics and antiinflammatory drugs and compared with age-matched control patients. The ulcer sites of emerging worms were kept continuously moist, and 18 worms were extracted from 14 patients during the above mentioned period. The average time taken for the entire worm to be expelled in these patients was considerably shorter (13.6 days) than in controls (89 days). Seven (39%) of these worms were expelled spontaneously whereas the re

The distribution of dracunculiasis in Nigeria: a preliminary study.

This paper presents a preliminary assessment of the distribution and endemicity of dracunculiasis in Nigeria. The disease is found in all 19 States of the Federation and in the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja. It occurs in areas with a dry season of more than nine months as well as those with a dry season of less than four months; the seasonal distribution of rainfall influences the peak period of disease transmission and patency. Altogether, an estimated 2.5 million cases occur every year, and at least 30% of the entire rural population is at risk from the infection. The widespread distrib…

Dracunculiasis. An incidental diagnosis in a Saudi female.

Dracunculiasis is a disabling, and economically crippling parasitic infestation transmitted by drinking contaminated water. Although the disease has been eradicated from most parts of the world, it is still endemic in some tropical African countries. Here we report a 65-year-old female from the southern region of Saudi Arabia with radiological evidence of heavy load of guinea worms. This case could represent the local reemergence of the disease.

Dracunculiasis eradication. Certification of absence of transmission.

Dracunculiasis transmission is now confined to the African continent. Eradication efforts must be intensified in the countries that are still endemic: Benin, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Côte c'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Sudan, Togo and Uganda. In these countries provision of safe drinking-water, containment of cases and health education for the exposed populations remain key measures for the interruption of transmission++ and for success. The Commission felt that particular attention should be given to Ghana, Nigeria and Sudan where eradication activ…
