[Albert Calmette: celebrating the 150th anniversary of his birth].

Albert Calmette (1863-1933) left a major legacy, ranging from basic research to practical medical applications. His initial work focused on antivenimous serum therapy, as well as the creation of Pasteur Institutes outside France. But his greatest achievement is the discovery of the BCG vaccine, in conjunction with Camille Guerin. This was a major advance at a time when tuberculosis was a veritable scourge, responsible for the deaths of thousands of children each year. He also pioneered early TB control in the field. The validity of BCG vaccination was not called into question despite the Lubec

[Encephalitis Lethargica: Awakenings].

Postencephalitic parkinsonism is a characteristic chronic sequelae of encephalitis lethargica, a pandemic disorder which swept the whole world in 1917-1928. Based on his clinical experiences at the Mount Carmel hospital, Oliver Sacks published Awakenings in 1973, and an American drama film Awakenings was premiered in 1990. Success and setbacks of the levodopa trial in postencephalitic parkinsonism patients were chronologically described, and the mother's delight on her son's "return" was impressive; this scene can be shared by us neurologists, even if it was transient. Above all, the exemplary

House: Practical Abilities Represented on Television and Impact on mEdical Students ('House PARTIES').

INTRODUCTION: Medical dramas, such as House, often depict exaggerated skills and procedures that may influence medical students' perceptions of health care. The true extent to which doctors' competencies are exaggerated is unknown. The aim of this study was to assess the practical skills demonstrated in House and consider how these depictions could contribute to unrealistic professional identity formation amongst medical students. METHODS: An observational study of season one of House was undertaken. Three reviewers, all senior medical trainees, independently analysed 22 episodes to identify

Impossible motherhood: a health humanities reading of two monologues for women.

Separated by a gap of 27 years, Anna Reynold's Jordan (1992) and Gary Owen's Iphigenia in Splott (2015) offer, on the surface, dramaturgically similar critiques of the impact of poverty on motherhood. Both plays are critically acclaimed monologues for women, which describe the death of a baby following inadequate interventions from health and/or social care services. This article examines the different theatrical contexts for these plays and offers a situated reading of the representation of maternal crisis in circumstances of social deprivation. When considered in parallel, Jordan and Iphigen

Theatre, disability and wellbeing: addressing best practice and creative outcomes across disabled and non-disabled communities through an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In the context of ongoing underrepresentation of disabled people and shifts in the theatre industry, this article examines the significance of personal disability understandings and how these are interpreted in relation to the wellbeing of disabled people in theatre. METHODS: The findings presented are part of an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis; an interdisciplinary study detailing experiences of theatre practice and disability among professional actors and directors in theatres that are funded by Arts Council England. RESULTS: One of the six emergent themes from intervi

[Historical necessity and human action in Morte e vida severina].

Using the essential elements of tragic action described in Aristotles Poetics, the text compares João Cabral de Melo Neto's Morte e vida severina to Sophocles Oedipus rex with the purpose of bringing to light the tension that exists between human necessity and human action. It is an eminently epidemiological fact that draws a link between these two works. In Morte e vida severina, the causa efficiens behind Severino's decision to migrate is a famine; in Oedipus rex, a plague afflicting the inhabitants of Thebes is the event that hastens discovery of king Laiuss true assassin. It is a reflectio

Reel worlds: Reconstructing the history of postwar child psychotherapy through fiction film.

This article uses British drama film No Place for Jennifer (1950) to argue for the evidential value of staged content of real psychotherapeutic places (Institute of Child Psychology) and practices (Margaret Lowenfeld's World Technique). In the absence of 'real' documentary footage, discoveries of recreated therapeutic spaces within largely forgotten genre films can help reconstruct histories of the 'psy' sciences whilst offering insight into the contestations specific sites and practices provoked. Employing Baron's reformulation from 'documentary' to 'archival document', it demonstrates that c

Relational marital paradigm.

The relational marital paradigm presumes that those partners who trigger the strongest impulses of attraction and passionate feelings of love in each other are those who are most likely to marry. However, with time these feelings also awaken memories of the most horrible conflicts and nightmares experienced in the family of origin. The subconscious intention is that the primary drama will, this time, be resolved with more positive outcomes. Relational marital therapy, therefore, sets a new milestone in understanding. It is a different approach to therapeutic practice that is based on the thera

Séraphin (1747-1800), "the facetious hunchback": How ankylosing spondylitis contributed to the success of his shadow puppet theatre.

Séraphin (1747-1800) is considered the founder of shadow puppetry in France. This "facetious hunchback", well known to Parisians in the late 18th century, ran his own theater until his death in 1800 at the age of 53. His deformity seems to have left its mark on popular memory, and was an integral part of the "Théâtre Séraphin". Part of his skeleton was preserved in the Dupuytren Museum in Paris. In 1897, it was described as a "particular kind of ankylosis, probably different from ordinary kyphosis". Then, in 1899, Dr. André Léri, a pupil of Pierre Marie, hypothesized from skeletal analysis tha

Performing the Bakla in The Care Divas: Crossdressing, Affective Labor, and the Glimpse of the Cosmopolitan.

This essay is a close reading of The Care Divas, a Filipino musical revolving around the struggle of five Filipino caregivers in Israel who also struggle with their sexual identities as bakla (Filipino homosexual). The analysis is both an affirmation and a critique of the performance. In the affirmation, the musical is argued to present a social reality that is intended for and in need of interrogation: the Filipino bakla. The musical implicitly features the bakla as a cosmopolitan. At the outset, this cosmopolitan disposition comes from the fact that the characters are migrant workers (caregi

[The last melancholia of Alonso Quijano, the Righteous].

In Cervantes' immortal novel, "Don Quixote" is the nom de guerre that Alonso Quijano--a honest Spanish yeoman nicknamed "The Upright One"--adopts under the spell of insanity that has lured him into being a knight rider. A psycho-spiritual analysis of Don Quixote's return to mental health is presented, covering the time-span between Don Quixote's coming back to this native village and his last days. By way of a "historical diagnosis", the author proposes some clinical explanations: Goodman Quijano's last illness might have been a plasmodium falciparum-caused malaria; malaria, however did not co

Eugene O'Neill and Addison's disease.

A detailed review of hospital records, physician's notes, diaries, letters, and autopsy reports offers sufficient clinical grounds to establish that Eugene O'Neill developed adrenal insufficiency, secondary to tuberculosis, in later life--a fact hitherto unknown--the condition not becoming manifest until after he had abdominal surgery in 1936.

Optimal relaxation parameters of dynamic row-action maximum likelihood algorithm and post-smoothing filter for image reconstruction of dedicated breast PET.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the optimal β value of the relaxation control parameter and the post-smoothing filter in the list-mode dynamic row-action maximum likelihood algorithm (LM-DRAMA) to detect early stage breast cancer with high-resolution dedicated breast positron emission tomography (dbPET) in phantom and clinical studies. METHODS: A breast phantom containing four spheres (5, 7.5, 10, and 16 mm in diameter) was filled with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose solution (sphere-to-background ratio, 8:1) and scanned on a dbPET scanner. The images were reconstructed using LM-DRAMA with di

A note on a phrase in Shakespeare's play King Lear: 'a plague upon your epileptic visage'.

In Shakespeare's play King Lear the word 'epileptic' appears (used in a derogatory manner). This is held to be the first appearance of the word in the English language (although we have found earlier English references to the word which Shakespeare may have read). Textual analysis of the lines following the use of 'epileptic' suggests that it is actually a reference to the pock-marks of syphilis, endemic in Elizabethan England, and is not actually a reference to epilepsy itself.

Transgender as ingroup or outgroup? Lesbian, gay, and bisexual viewers respond to a transgender character in daytime television.

From November 2006 to April 2007, the daytime drama All My Children featured Zoe, the first transitioning transgender character on broadcast television. Acknowledging historical tension within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) community over transgender acceptance, this study examines how lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) viewers of All My Children reacted to this character. LGB viewers were more likely to dislike the character than non-LGB viewers, yet were also more trans-supportive than non-LGB viewers. Further evaluation suggests LGB viewers' negative response to Zoe was tied n

Lived experiences of people with or at risk for aortic dissection: A qualitative assessment.

Aortic dissection (AD) is a life-changing event that is often accompanied by a loss of normal quality of life. Survivors of AD go on to have a chronic disease that requires lifestyle modification, medical management, and surgical repair of the aorta. Clinical care includes multiple disciplines, health care settings, and often different geographic locations. This qualitative assessment examined the experiences of people with and at risk for AD. The following four themes emerged: "unnecessary drama" at diagnosis, unmet needs for information and support, the burden of self-advocacy and care coord

Persistent dysphonia in two performers affecting the singing and projected speaking voice: a report on a collaborative approach to management.

The projected speaking voice and the singing voice are highly sensitive to external and internal influences, and teachers of spoken voice and singing are in a unique position to identify subtle and more serious vocal difficulties in their students. Persistent anomalies may herald early onset of changes in vocal fold structure, neurophysiological control, or emotional stability. Two cases are presented to illustrate the benefits of a collaborative approach to diagnosis and management. The first, a 21-year-old male drama and singing student with an abnormally high speaking voice and falsetto sin
