Brief motivational intervention for college drinking: the synergistic impact of social anxiety and perceived drinking norms.

Despite the efficacy of Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS), students with higher social anxiety appear vulnerable to poorer outcomes. A possible explanation for these outcomes is that corrective normative feedback (an active component of BASICS) may be less effective for socially anxious students if their beliefs about others' drinking are less malleable because of intense fear of negative evaluation for deviating from perceived drinking norms. This study evaluated whether socially anxious students demonstrated less change in perceived norms during BASICS. W

The Loughborough Alcohol Drinking Questionnaire (LoAD-Q) for assessment of emotional, external, and restrained drinking behaviour.

Researching alcohol-related addictive behaviours typically utilises questionnaires which measure an individual's level of alcohol use. However, these questionnaires typically either rely on a participant reporting the amount of alcohol they drink in units or a measure of disorderly drinking behaviour. Such measures do not necessarily capture the essence of drinking behaviours in the general population. This study aimed to validate a new alcohol drinking questionnaire and evaluate its internal consistency, factor structure, and test-retest reliability. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a 3-c

Daily assessments of behavioral economic indices and drinking among rural-residing adults with at-risk drinking.

In a secondary analysis among adults with at-risk drinking who live in rural areas (N = 75; 62.7% Female; 98.7% White), we examined the predictive ability of behavioral economic (BE) indices (demand, delay discounting, and proportion of alcohol-free activities) for next-day alcohol use via daily surveys across the range of alcohol use severity. These relations were tested using linear mixed-effects models, including evaluating the interaction of BE indices with alcohol use severity. In unadjusted analyses, proportion of alcohol-free activities (β [95% CI]: -0.022 [-0.038, -0.006]), demand inte

Real-time impaired control over drinking: The role of contextual influences during naturally occurring drinking episodes.

BACKGROUND: Impaired control over drinking is a central feature of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), yet little within-person research on impaired control is available. As a result, there is little research regarding the dynamic impact of social drinking context on impaired control. The current study sought to fill these gaps, testing a sequential mediation model wherein social drinking context predicted episode-specific deviations in perceived impaired control, which indirectly predicted daily negative consequences via drinking more than planned. We also modeled if estimated blood alcohol concentra

Drinking to cope as a mechanism between sleep problems and heavy episodic drinking among trauma survivors.

Objective: Women who have experienced trauma report high rates of heavy episodic drinking (HED) and sleep problems. Prior work suggests that poor sleep exacerbates heavy alcohol use; however, potential mechanisms for this association are unclear. Consistent with the self-medication model, one possibility may be that women with a history of trauma are drinking at increased rates in order to cope with the affective consequences of poor sleep. To examine this possibility, the current study tested the role of drinking to cope motives as a mediator of prospective associations between sleep problems

Contingent gambling-drinking patterns and problem drinking severity moderate implicit gambling-alcohol associations in problem gamblers.

Although problem gambling and problem drinking often co-occur, the processes underlying this association are not well understood. This study investigated the effects of contingent gambling-drinking patterns and problem drinking severity on implicit gambling-alcohol associations. Participants were 144 (34 female) problem gamblers. The South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) measured severity of problem gambling. The Brief Michigan Alcohol Screening Test (BMAST) measured severity of problem drinking. The Implicit Association Test (Greenwald, McGhee, & Schwartz, 1998, Journal of Personality and Social

Water-intake volume regulation in the rat: schedule-induced drinking compared with water-deprivation-induced drinking.

Hungry rats drink extremely large amounts of water when they are intermittently fed small amount of food (schedule-induced polydipsia). Are such animals motivated to drink for long durations, to ingest large amounts of fluid, or to do both? When drinking-tube apertures were decreased to slow the rate of water ingestion, each of eight rats spent more time drinking (M = 11.5 min) than when larger apertures were used (M = 7.8 min). The mean volumes ingested were not different. These equal volumes were generated by adjustment of each drink duration in accordance with ingestion rate even during the

Energy drink-induced cardiomyopathy.

We report a case of severe biventricular heart failure potentially related to excessive energy drink consumption in a 21-year-old man. The patient presented with a 4-month history of shortness of breath on exertion, orthopnoea and weight loss. Transthoracic echocardiography demonstrated severely impaired biventricular systolic function and bilateral ventricular thrombi, subsequently confirmed on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, which found in addition no oedema, inflammation or focal fibrosis. Blood tests, renal ultrasound and subsequent abdominal MRI demonstrated severe renal failure cause

The drink driving situation in Vietnam.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the extent and nature of the problem and the main contributing factors to drink driving crashes; determine the current mechanisms in place, particularly in terms of legislation and its enforcement; and identify baseline data and relevant stakeholders. METHODS: The situational assessment was based on the collection of secondary data from available reports and documents, in-depth interviews with key representatives at a central level, and field surveys in provinces. RESULTS: Vietnam has experienced phenomenal growth in motor vehicles, especially motorcycles, in the last

Epidemiology and consequences of drinking and driving.

Alcohol is a major factor in traffic crashes, and crashes involving alcohol are more likely to result in injuries and deaths than crashes where alcohol is not a factor. Increasing blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) have been linked to increased crash risk. Male drivers, particularly those ages 22 to 45; people with drinking problems and prior drinking and driving convictions; and drivers who do not wear safety belts are disproportionately likely to be involved in alcohol-related fatal crashes. Alcohol-dependent people are over-represented in all alcohol-related traffic crashes, as are those w

Patterns of drinking in Thai men.

Alcohol problems have increased considerably in Thailand in recent years, in common with many other countries in South East Asia. Little is known about the patterns or contexts of alcohol consumption in these countries, and so efforts to develop preventative strategies have been hampered. To identify current patterns related to alcohol consumption, we recruited 91 alcohol-dependent subjects, 77 hazardous or harmful drinkers, and 144 abstainers or light drinkers. A structured interview incorporating the World Health Organization 'tri-level' method to determine the amount and frequency of drinki

Cola drinks consumption and oesophagitis.

For oesophageal epithelial changes to develop from gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), the character of the refluxate must be acid enough to cause injury. Experimentally, copious perfusion of the oesophagus with weak acid is quite harmless. However, hydrochloric acid alone with a pH below 3.0 may cause oesophageal injury. Cola drinks are strongly acidic (pH 2.5). This study analyses the influence of and possible interaction between cola consumption and oesophagitis. Twenty rats were divided into two groups of 10. The animals received saline (pH 7.0) or cola (pH 2.6) per OS with 24 h free

What's the harm in just a drink?

A major characteristic of prenatal alcohol intake is a subsequent birth weight decrement. Experimental animal work has demonstrated that nutritional effects apart, there is a strong, direct alcohol effect responsible for this decrement. Consistency in this effect of birth weight decrement has been demonstrated in a range of species. Early work with animals had equally demonstrated that this effect can be transitory and that catch up is possible. Quite recently, human studies have supported such animal findings to the extent that now we need to question even more strongly our approach required

Results of heavy drinking in pregnancy.

The outcome of pregnancy is reported for 23 women who had been drinking alcohol heavily and who were delivered in Belfast maternity hospitals during the last 4 years. Twenty-one (91%) of the babies were small-for-gestational age and many had head circumference measurements less than 5th centile. Ten babies (44%) had abnormal facies consistent with the 'fetal alcohol syndrome' and 10 babies had congenital malformations of the heart, palate, genitalia and kidneys. Perinatal problems which included breech presentation, birth asphyxia, hypoglycaemia, polycythaemia, hypocalcaemia and withdrawal sym

Patterns of drinking among the deaf.

Thirty-nine White deaf persons functioning normally within the general hearing community were surveyed on a variety of factors concerning their use of alcohol, and compared to the data from two comparable hearing samples reported previously in the literature. No significant differences were found between the deaf and hearing samples on patterns of drinking or other parameters of alcohol use. Heavier alcohol use among the deaf correlated significantly with reported frequency of driving after having drunk too much, age of having had the first drink, ever having been drunk, feeling guilt over dri
