Cannabinoids for the Treatment of Dermatologic Conditions.

In recent years, cannabinoid (CB) products have gained popularity among the public. The anti-inflammatory properties of CBs have piqued the interest of researchers and clinicians because they represent promising avenues for the treatment of autoimmune and inflammatory skin disorders that may be refractory to conventional therapy. The objective of this study was to review the existing literature regarding CBs for dermatologic conditions. A primary literature search was conducted in October 2020, using the PubMed and Embase databases, for all articles published from 1965 to October 2020. Review

HIV wasting syndrome: treatment update.

OBJECTIVE: To review the pathophysiology and treatment of HIV wasting syndrome. DATA SOURCES AND STUDY SELECTION: MEDLINE searches (January 1987-September 1997) of the English-language medical literature were conducted. Bibliographies were also selected during a manual review. DATA SYNTHESIS: HIV-related weight loss, often referred to as HIV wasting syndrome, is a common manifestation of advanced HIV infection. Wasting in HIV involves the preferential loss of lean body mass with a paradoxical preservation of body fat. The etiology of wasting appears to be the result of many factors, which ma

Recent implications of weight loss in lung cancer management.

Successful lung cancer management has been hindered by the limited efficacy of dietary and pharmacologic interventions to prevent or reverse cancer-associated weight loss. The addition of total parenteral nutrition to chemotherapy in early trials was associated with survival detriment. Dietary counseling and enteral supplement use are common strategies that, when evaluated in randomized trials, do not improve anthropometrics or clinical outcome in lung cancer. Pharmacologic agents including corticosteroids, cyproheptadine, growth hormone, hydrazine sulfate, dronabinol, and pentoxyphylline also

[Acute emergencies in oncology].

The spectrum of dermato-oncological emergencies is multifaceted. They are particularly observed in cases with malignant melanoma due to the large number of patients and prolonged survival rates that are associated with new therapies for advanced disease. Dermato-oncological patients present to the hospital with symptoms like nausea and emesis, unexpected neurological deficits, various gastrointestinal problems, and even acute abdomen, acute breathlessness, or hemoptysis. Furthermore, emergencies can be caused by hematological problems like anemia and leukopenia. In addition to standardized car

Wasting syndrome: nutritional support in HIV infection.

Malnutrition and wasting are common in patients with HIV infection. Nutritional needs vary with the stage of HIV disease. Severe weight loss is associated with increased mortality in patients with AIDS and is multifactorial in development. Possible causes of weight loss include decreased food intake due to oral or GI pathology or anorexia, nutrient malabsorption, and systemic infections. Severe malabsorption is limited to patients with advanced HIV disease with CD4+ cell counts < 100 and usually < 50 cells/microliters. The spectrum of GI pathogens continues to broaden. For hypermetabolic patie

Cannabidiol and ∆9-Tetrahydrocannabinol in Endometriosis: A Literature Review on Therapeutic Applications and Mechanisms.

Endometriosis is a chronic, inflammatory, and multifactorial disease characterized by the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity, often associated with debilitating symptoms. It affects approximately 10% of women of reproductive age and is also related to infertility. Endometriosis can be classified as peritoneal, ovarian, or deep endometriosis, with primary symptoms including chronic pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, and dyspareunia. Diagnosis and treatment are challenging, with laparoscopy and biopsy of ectopic tissue being the gold standard. Cannabidiol (CBD) and ∆9-tetrahydroca

Delta-8-Tetrahydrocannabinol Exposure and Confirmation in Four Pediatric Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a known isomer of delta-9-THC, both found naturally in the Cannabis sativa plant and thought to have similar potency. Delta-8-THC products are widely accessible in retail shops which may lead to a rise in pediatric exposures with substantial clinical effects. CASE REPORT: This is a case series of four pediatric patients that were seen between June and September 2021. The patients presented with varied clinical symptoms including confusion, somnolence, seizure-like activity, hypotension, and tachycardia after exposure to delta-8-THC products

Analysis of cannabidiol (CBD) and THC in nonprescription consumer products: Implications for patients and practitioners.

PURPOSE: Cannabidiol products remains largely unregulated in the US. Unlike the Rx formulation of CBD [EpidiolexR], little information is available regarding labeling accuracy (does the product contain what the label says it does), lot to lot variability, nor long-term product stability. Understanding these properties are fundamental if these products are to be used in patients with epilepsy, where product variability of traditional AEDs has been suspected to result in inadequate seizure control. Therefore, we analyzed commercial CBD products, including oils, aqueous products (i.e., beverages)

The Yin and Yang of Cannabis: A Systematic Review of Human Neuroimaging Evidence of the Differential Effects of Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol and Cannabidiol.

Cannabidiol (CBD) and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) have been the most investigated cannabinoids at the human and preclinical levels, although the neurobiological mechanisms underlying their effects remain unclear. Human experimental evidence complemented by observational studies suggests that THC may have psychotogenic effects while CBD may have antipsychotic effects. However, whether their effects on brain function are consistent with their opposing behavioral effects remains unclear. To address this, here we synthesize neuroimaging evidence investigating the acute effects of THC and CBD on

Pharmacology of Medical Cannabis.

The Cannabis plant has been used for many of years as a medicinal agent in the relief of pain and seizures. It contains approximately 540 natural compounds including more than 100 that have been identified as phytocannabinoids due to their shared chemical structure. The predominant psychotropic component is Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), while the major non-psychoactive ingredient is cannabidiol (CBD). These compounds have been shown to be partial agonists or antagonists at the prototypical cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2. The therapeutic actions of Δ9-THC and CBD include an ability to a

Treatment of Tourette syndrome with cannabinoids.

Cannabinoids have been used for hundred of years for medical purposes. To day, the cannabinoid delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and the cannabis extract nabiximols are approved for the treatment of nausea, anorexia and spasticity, respectively. In Tourette syndrome (TS) several anecdotal reports provided evidence that marijuana might be effective not only in the suppression of tics, but also in the treatment of associated behavioural problems. At the present time there are only two controlled trials available investigating the effect of THC in the treatment of TS. Using both self and examine

Optimization of the quantitative analysis of the major cannabis metabolite (11-nor-9-COOH-delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol) in urine by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.

A gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric electron impact method is presented for the detection and quantification of 11-nor-9-carboxy-delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC-COOH) in urine, for use in the confirmation of presumptive results obtained by other techniques. Four extraction procedures, two solid-liquid and two liquid-liquid, have been compared. A comparison of two trimethylsilylating methods demonstrates that the best results are obtained by the use of a mixture containing N-methyl-N-trimethylsilyl-trifluoroacetamide, trimethyliodosilane and dithioerithritol (100:0.2:1) v/v/w. International Policy Approaches for Higher THC Cannabis Products: Are They Applicable to the Australian Medicinal Cannabis Framework?

INTRODUCTION: There have been concerted research efforts internationally to examine the health effects of higher delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentration cannabis products and to design policies to reduce potential negative health effects of their use. This study identifies international policy approaches for regulating higher THC products relevant to the Australian medicinal cannabis program. METHODS: An environmental scan of international literature and policy as part of a broader study commissioned to inform Australian policy. Methods were prospectively registered with the Open Sci

Acid-Catalyzed Conversion of Cannabidiol to Tetrahydrocannabinols: En Route to Demystifying Manufacturing Processes and Controlling the Reaction Outcomes.

Background: Over the last decade, there has been a significant increase in the production of multiple tetrahydrocannabidiol (THC) related products via the acid catalysis of cannabidiol (CBD). The widespread availability of CBD and the unregulated or poorly regulated nature of its use have flooded the market with THC-containing products of unverifiable provenance and frequently contaminated by trace metals and residual solvents. Under non-optimized, poorly controlled, or harsh reaction conditions, these acid-catalyzed transformations yield multiple cannabinoids including Δ9-THC and Δ8-THC, alon

Portrayal of Delta-8 Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on YouTube.

BACKGROUND: Following the United States (U.S.) Federal Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, many retailers began selling intoxicating cannabis products, including Delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) as "hemp," claiming that it provided a legal loophole to do so. This qualitative study assessed Delta-8 THC messaging on YouTube, the world's second-most visited website. METHODS: In 2022, two researchers searched the terms "Delta 8" and "Delta-8" on YouTube; 47 unique videos were identified. A combination of inductive and deductive coding was used. The larger team discussed the coding after every
