Drought attenuates plant defence against bacterial pathogens by suppressing the expression of CBP60g/SARD1 during combined stress.

In nature, plants are frequently exposed to drought and bacterial pathogens simultaneously. However, information on how the drought and defence pathways interact and orchestrate global transcriptional regulation is limited. Here, we show that moderate drought stress enhances the susceptibility of Arabidopsis thaliana to Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000. Using transcriptome meta-analysis, we found that drought and bacterial stress antagonistically modulate a large set of genes predominantly involved in salicylic acid (SA) and abscisic acid (ABA) signalling networks. We identified that the

Plant photosynthetic responses to drought, rewatering, and flooding.

The review discusses how plants modulate photosynthesis under contrasting water regimes, highlighting stress-specific limitations, recovery dynamics, and physiological indicators to inform breeding and management under climate change. Climate change is intensifying rainfall extremes, including prolonged droughts, sudden rewatering, and extended flooding, threatening crop productivity worldwide. Here, we present an integrative review synthesizing how major crops modulate photosynthesis under these contrasting water regimes. Drought restricts stomatal and mesophyll conductance, downregulates RuB

Chloride fertilization increased maize shoot chloride levels and yield depending on soil moisture conditions.

Growing crops on sandy soils becomes especially difficult during summer when rainfall is scarce, making drought conditions even more severe. The micronutrient chloride (Cl-) can accumulate in plant shoot tissue reaching contents that are typical for macronutrients, assumed it is supplied and taken up in appropriate amounts. When this happens, it can act as an osmoticum, facilitating shoot hydration, reported previously under drought. So far, this cascade of events was only reported under in-door conditions with pot experiments and to the best of our knowledge, not under field conditions. Under

Physiological drought responses and recovery in Mexican soybean genotypes: Implications for sustainable water management.

Drought is a major abiotic constraint on soybean productivity and an increasing challenge for agricultural sustainability under water-limited conditions. Understanding plant responses to drought is essential for identifying traits associated with crop adaptation and resilience. This study evaluated the physiological responses of three Mexican soybean genotypes (E2309, I1240, and I700) to 17 days of progressive drought during the reproductive stage, followed by an 8-day recovery period after re-watering. Control plants remained well-watered throughout the experiment. Canopy wilting, stomatal co

Morpho-anatomical changes and physio-biochemical responses of Carex siderosticta under water stress.

Carex siderosticta Hance is an advantageous understory and lawn greening resource due to its strong environmental adaptability and ornamental value, but extreme climates render soil moisture a key growth-limiting factor. Thus, this study explored the response strategies of C. siderosticta to drought and flooding via pot water control and double-pot flooding simulations. Results showed that all the water stresses significantly inhibited the growth of C. siderosticta with increasing stress intensity; leaf and root biomass, water content and root activity decreased gradually, and root architectur

Screening tomato genotypes for early-stage drought tolerance using polyethylene glycol-induced osmotic stress.

BACKGROUND: Drought stress is a major abiotic constraint to tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) production, particularly at early developmental stages. Screening genotypes under controlled osmotic stress is crucial for identifying drought-tolerant cultivars. This study evaluated five tomato genotypes Khumal 2, Monoprecos, NGRCO9569, NGRCO9571, and Srijana for germination and seedling performance under polyethylene glycol (PEG)-induced drought stress to identify resilient candidates for breeding programs. RESULTS: A completely randomized design (CRD) experiment was conducted under three PEG level

Insights into the plant responses to drought and decoding the potential of root associated microbiome for inducing drought tolerance.

Global increase in water scarcity is a serious problem for sustaining crop productivity. The lack of water causes the degeneration of the photosynthetic apparatus, an imbalance in key metabolic pathways, an increase in free radical generation as well as weakens the root architecture of plants. Drought is one of the major stresses that directly interferes with the osmotic status of plant cells. Abscisic acid (ABA) is known to be a key player in the modulation of drought responses in plants and involvement of both ABA-dependent and ABA-independent pathways have been observed during drought. Conc

Exploring the use of Leucobacter komagatae as an eco-friendly bio-inoculant to enhance sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) growth and yield under drought conditions.

Drought occurrence owing to climate change is a major constraint to attain sustainable agriculture, severely limiting crop growth and productivity. Sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrids), a key crop in tropical and subtropical regions, is particularly susceptible to drought stress because of its extended growth duration and high-water requirements. In this study, previously identified four plant growth promoting Leucobacter komagatae (ASBD2, ASBD15, ASBD19 and ASBD30) were evaluated under greenhouse conditions (pot culture study) over two consecutive years (2023-24 and 2024-25). Of these four isol

Intraspecific variation in mycorrhiza-associated traits predicts plant responses to resource limitation.

Variation in arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) root colonization and associated root traits among plant species plays a crucial role in determining plant community responses to environmental change. However, species mean trait values often obscure substantial variation among individuals within a species. Because trait-based ecology has focused predominantly on interspecific differences, the intraspecific responses of AMF-associated traits to resource limitations remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we examined intraspecific variation in AMF-associated traits among genetically diver

Drought stress affecting the production of secondary metabolites in medicinal plants.

Due to production of some important biochemicals including secondary metabolites (SM), medicinal plants are of economic and health significance. However, medicinal plants are subjected to different types of stress including drought affecting their growth and biochemical properties including SM production. There is an increasing demand for cultivation of medicinal plants and subsequent production of SM as suitable alternatives for conventional pharmaceuticals. Additionally, although research has indicated drought stress may alter SM production in medicinal plants, affecting their health and eco

Genome-Wide Analysis of the GGPS Gene Family in Phoebe zhennan and Analysis of the Role of PzGGPS12 in Terpenoid Biosynthesis.

Geranylgeranyl diphosphate synthase (GGPS) is a key enzyme in terpenoid biosynthesis, but its role in Phoebe zhennan remains largely unknown. Here, 14 PzGGPS genes were identified and classified into three groups with conserved gene structures and motifs. Among them, PzGGPS12 was identified as a key gene for terpenoid biosynthesis, wood fragrance formation, and drought tolerance. Functional analyses showed that PzGGPS12 catalyzes the production of terpene precursors and promotes the accumulation of mono-, sesqui-, di-, and triterpenoids, thereby enhancing drought resistance through metabolic f

Biofilm formation by Pseudomonas putida KT2440 contributes to improve tomato drought stress resilience and priming for enhanced gene regulation.

Pseudomonas putida KT2440 is a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR), known to enhance tolerance to pathogen infection, but its role in drought stress mitigation remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to assess whether inoculation with KT2440 improves tomato tolerance to drought. Inoculation with the KT2440 wild type (WT) significantly improved ecophysiological drought stress responses by increasing leaf water potential and photosynthetic rate. It also resulted in an impact on the holobiont cell physiology through modulation of the activity signature of key enzymes of carbohydrate

Arbuscular mycorrhiza-upregulated PtPIP1;2 facilitates H2O2 transport to enhance drought tolerance in trifoliate orange.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can enhance drought tolerance of host plants; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Here, PtPIP1;2, a plasma membrane intrinsic protein gene strongly induced by AMF (Funneliformis mosseae (T.H. Nicolson & Gerd.) C. Walker & A. Schüßler) colonization under drought stress, was identified. Subcellular localization confirmed that PtPIP1;2 targets the plasma membrane. To investigate its function, PtPIP1;2-overexpressing (OE) hairy root lines were generated in trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata L. Raf.). Under drought stress, OE plants ex

Selenium nanoparticles and wheat straw biochar synergistically alleviate combined drought-heat stress in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) by modulating antioxidant defense, photosynthetic efficiency, and ion homeostasis.

Combined drought and heat stress (DS+HS) represents one of the most devastating multi-factorial constraints on global wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production, imposing synergistic physiological and molecular damage that far exceeds the effects of each stress applied individually. Emerging evidence suggests that selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) and biochar independently confer abiotic stress tolerance in cereal crops; however, their combined soil application under concurrent DS+HS in wheat has not been previously investigated. The present study was conducted at the wire house facility of the Fou

Integrating RNA-Seq, Transcription Factor Annotation, and WGCNA Identifies Key Candidate Genes in Upland Cotton Seedlings Under Short-Term Drought Stress.

Background: Drought is one of the major abiotic stresses that affect and limit cotton growth and production. However, transcriptome differences between drought-tolerant and drought-susceptible cotton lines remain largely unknown. Methods and Results: In this study, two upland cotton cultivars, the drought-tolerant XLZ80 and drought-sensitive XLZ61, were subjected to comparative phenotypic and transcriptomic analyses under drought stress. Phenotypic evaluation showed that XLZ80 exhibited only mild leaf wilting, whereas XLZ61 displayed severe wilting symptoms after drought stress. RNA-seq analys

Linking drought strategy to climate-of-origin in a widespread C4 grass: hydraulic traits, xylem anatomy and stomatal behaviour in Themeda triandra.

Hydraulic, stomatal, and anatomical traits strongly influence plant performance under drought, but the extent to which these trait-types are coordinated and relate to climate-of-origin remains vastly underexplored in herbaceous species relative to woody plants. We quantified variation in these traits in eight populations of Themeda triandra selected from contrasting summer temperature and precipitation regimes across Australia, grown under common conditions and exposed to drought. Trait-climate-of-origin relationships were quantified using linear mixed models. Plants from drier climates exhibi

Generating drought- and salt-tolerant tomato germplasm through bioengineering of the ethylene response factor SlERF.J2.

Drought and salinity are key abiotic constraints limiting the growth, development, and yield of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). Ethylene response factors are crucial regulators that govern plants' adaptation to diverse abiotic and biotic stress stimuli. Nevertheless, the exact role of SlERF.J2 in abiotic stress resistance remains unclear. In this study, clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 gene-editing technology was used to generate slerf.j2 knockout tomato lines to clarify the biological function of SlERF.J2 in regulating tomato's resp

Transcriptome Analysis Reveals Key Drought-Stress-Responsive Genes in Two Bermudagrass Genotypes.

Drought inhibits grass development and survival. However, molecular-based studies on drought tolerance mechanisms in bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) remain scarce. Therefore, a drought-resistant bermudagrass (Tianshui) and a drought-sensitive (Zhengzhou) genotype were selected and subjected to 28 days of 50% drought stress. Leaves were sampled for RNA sequencing. Under drought stress, 2410 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were discovered in which 1214 were upregulated (tolerant vs. sensitive) and 1196 downregulated. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) indicated that these speci

Integrated metabolomics, transcriptomic, and phytohormonal analyses to study the effects of water stress and foliar abscisic acid application in Thymus species using LC-MS/MS.

Thyme species, including Thymus vulgaris, T. kotschyanus (drought-tolerant) and T. serpyllum (drought-sensitive), are valuable medicinal herbs. They are often grown in arid regions and are increasingly suffering from water stress due to climate change. Here, we analyzed the metabolome and expression of selected genes in leaves of these species under drought stress with and without treatment with the phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA). Among the terpenes, dominant metabolites in thyme, thymol was the most important terpenoid component, followed by thymoquinone, carvacrol and p-cymene in all three
