Nonmedical Use of Prescription Drugs and Sexual Risk Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Substance use is associated with sexual risk behaviors among youth, but little is known about whether nonmedical prescription drug use, an increasingly common behavior, is associated with sexual risk behaviors. METHODS: Data from the 2011 and 2013 national Youth Risk Behavior Surveys, cross-sectional surveys conducted among nationally representative samples of students in grades 9 to 12 were combined (n = 29,008) to examine the association between ever taking prescription drugs without a doctor's prescription and sexual risk behaviors (ever having sexual intercourse, current sexua

Prescription drugs associated with reports of violence towards others.

CONTEXT: Violence towards others is a seldom-studied adverse drug event and an atypical one because the risk of injury extends to others. OBJECTIVE: To identify the primary suspects in adverse drug event reports describing thoughts or acts of violence towards others, and assess the strength of the association. METHODOLOGY: From the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS) data, we extracted all serious adverse event reports for drugs with 200 or more cases received from 2004 through September 2009. We identified any case report indicating homicide, homicidal i

TV commercials for prescription drugs: a discourse analytic perspective.

BACKGROUND: The US Food and Drug Administration has called for research that may assist in developing standards for risk/benefit messages in the promotion of prescription drugs. Linguistics-based models of meaning and inference, though frequently applied to advertising, have not hitherto been used in this arena. OBJECTIVE: This study was intended to illustrate how discourse analysis, a methodology for microanalysis of texts in context, can elucidate the workings and interplay of promotional, informational, and other functions of direct-to-consumer drug advertising, anticipating threats to "fa

Use of prescription drugs in the first trimester and congenital malformations.

A prospective survey of prenatal use of prescription drugs in Tasmania yielded detailed information on drug exposure, delivery and outcome for 56,037 births from 1982 to 1989. First trimester drug use was reported by 30.9% of women, and 17.9% used only supplements of vitamins and/or minerals; 40% used alcohol during the first trimester, and 28.8% smoked cigarettes. There were 1,035 (1.85%) congenital malformations, of which 885 (85.5%) were major. The malformation rate was not significantly different in the following exposure categories: supplements only (1.62%); other pharmaceuticals (1.92%);

Characteristics of high-frequency consumers of prescription psychoactive drugs.

Two cohorts of white middle-class housewives who reported themselves as high-frequency consumers of prescription sedatives, tranquilizers, and stimulants have been studied and their characteristics have been reported. One group of these women are residents of a Midwestern state, and the other in a Southern state. These women can best be described as follows: Most reported their primary physician as being a general practitioner (60%), and most reported they had consulted two or more separate physicians during the last year (78%). More than a third (36%) had seen at least three different physici

Effects of a Prescription Drug Monitoring Program on Opioid Prescriptions Following Total Joint Arthroplasty in the State of California.

In an attempt to reduce opioid prescriptions, the state of California mandated physician participation in the Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES). The goal of this study is to assess whether this intervention led to a change in prescribing habits after primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The 90-day postoperative narcotic use was retrospectively reviewed for 13,382 patients undergoing primary THA and TKA. Patients were divided into pre-CURES and post-CURES cohorts based on date of surgery. Narcotic use was measured in morphin

Measuring the Effectiveness of Benzodiazepine Prescriptions Control in Community Setting Using Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP).

Benzodiazepines have been widely prescribed for several years for the treatment of anxiety, insomnia, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Benzodiazepines were meant to be for short term use but in clinical settings long term use has been the "norm" for the treatment. Benzodiazepines are known for addiction potential and have been involved in accidental overdose deaths. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), there has been a tenfold increase in the number of deaths due to overdose from 1999 to 2017. Benzodiazepines contributed to staggering high figures of 11,537 death

Prescription of Antidementia Drugs and Antipsychotics for Elderly Patients in Japan: A Descriptive Study Using Pharmacy Prescription Data.

BACKGROUND: Antipsychotics are commonly used for managing behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia among elderly patients with dementia receiving antidementia drugs (ADDs). However, the use of antipsychotics among these patients has not been investigated since 3 ADDs were approved in 2011 in Japan. METHOD: We conducted a descriptive study using pharmacy prescription data and identified patients aged ≥65 years who were newly prescribed donepezil, memantine, rivastigmine, and galantamine between January 1, 2012, and September 30, 2014. We determined the proportion of antipsychotic pres

Treatment of Long Coronavirus Disease in Japan: A Nationwide Study of Symptom-Associated Drug Prescriptions.

Long coronavirus disease (COVID) is characterized by symptoms persisting or reappearing at least 2 months post-recovery from acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Although Long COVID symptoms have been widely studied, data on drug prescriptions for patients with Long COVID in Japan remain limited. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze drug utilization patterns for Long COVID treatment using a nationwide database in Japan, with the goal of providing basic data to support the establishment of standard treatments in the future. The Medical Data Vision COVID-19 dataset was used to identify p

Drug-induced symptoms of functional dyspepsia and nausea. A symmetry analysis of one million prescriptions.

BACKGROUND: A large variety of drugs have been implicated in causing dyspepsia. Due to the high background incidence of dyspepsia it is impossible to distinguish between spontaneous and truly drug-related symptoms. Most patients with dyspeptic symptoms are treated empirically. Drug-induced dyspepsia might therefore be reflected in the sequencing of prokinetics relative to other medications. AIM: To screen a large prescription database for signs of drug-induced functional dyspepsia, applying a symmetry principle. METHODS: Prescription data on all incident users of cisapride and metoclopramide

Tracking changes in opioid prescriptions dispensed following the enactment of a prescription drug monitoring program use mandate.

BACKGROUND: Prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs) are state-based surveillance tools used to track controlled substances dispensed to patients and identify patients at-risk of misuse. Starting April 2017, Wisconsin required all prescribers access PDMP to review patient information before issuing a controlled substance prescription order for more than a 3-day supply. A primary goal of PDMP use mandates is to reduce avoidable prescribing and mitigate opioid related mortality and morbidity. Current literature has not evaluated the existence of a time point post-policy implementation, at w

Association between prescription drug monitoring programs use mandates and prescription stimulants received by Medicaid enrollees.

INTRODUCTION: Prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) use mandates are an important policy tool to curb nonmedical opioid use. However, data are scarce about their efficacy on other commonly used prescription drugs such as stimulants. METHODS: We used 2010-2020 state-level secondary data from Medicaid State Drug Utilisation Data and quasi-experimental difference-in-differences research design to estimate the association between PDMP use mandates and population-adjusted stimulants (amphetamines and methylphenidate) prescribing outcomes: (i) number of prescriptions filled; and (ii) total am
