PURPOSE: While the involvement of attention in utterance planning is well established at the conceptual and lexical levels, the attentional demands of postlexical processes are still debated. This study investigates the involvement of attentional resources on motor speech encoding during utterance production in the context of Parkinson's disease (PD), a population allowing to assess if the attentional demands observed in a dual-task paradigm (the dual-task costs [DTCs]) are explained by postlexical difficulties and not solely by executive impairment.
METHOD: Speech production was analyzed in

Day-to-day walking-related activities frequently involve the simultaneous performance of two or more tasks (i.e., dual task). Dual task ability is influenced by higher order cognitive and cortical control mechanisms. Recently, it has been shown that the concomitant execution of an attention-demanding task affected postural control in subject with cervical dystonia (CD). However, no study has investigated whether dual tasking might deteriorate gait performance in CD patients. To investigate whether adding a concomitant motor and cognitive tasks could affect walking performance in CD subjects.17

BACKGROUND: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) refers to individuals who report persistent cognitive deficits but perform normally on neuropsychological tests. Performance may be facilitated by increased prefrontal cortex activation, known as neural compensation, and could be used to differentiate between older adults with and without SCD.
OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional pilot study measured changes in the hemodynamic response (ΔHbO2) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) as well as cognitive and motor performance during fine and gross motor dual-tasks in older adults with and w

Age-related cognitive and motor decline impairs daily functioning and increases fall risk. Although both domains interact in everyday activities, they are often assessed separately, limiting ecological validity. This study examined reliability and construct validity of an assessment device for agility and motor-cognitive reactive stepping performance in older adults. In a test-retest design, 72 older adults (48 women; 73.7 ± 7.6 years) completed agility tests (Random Star Run and a dual task with multiple object tracking) and motor-cognitive tasks on the SKILLCOURT across four sessions: famili

INTRODUCTION:: Age-related decline in cerebrovascular function is linked to cognitive dysfunction. Cognitive dual-task interference in balance control is well-known clinically and is emerging as a key risk factor for dementia and falls.– Links between cerebral blood flow, white matter hyperintensities, and dual-task performance have been found under pathologic conditions (e.g. diabetes, post-stroke)., Physically-active older adults show an attenuated decline in cerebral blood flow compared to their sedentary peers, potentially due to exercise effects to reduce vascular stiffness and promote an

CONTEXT: Dual-task (simultaneous cognitive-motor activities) assessments have been adapted into reliable and valid clinical concussion measures. However, abundant motor and cognitive variations leave researchers and clinicians uncertain about which combinations elicit the intended dual-task effect. Our objective was to examine differences between commonly employed dual-task motor and cognitive combinations among healthy, college-aged individuals.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional laboratory study.
METHODS: Twenty participants (age: 21.3 [2.4] y; height: 176.0 [9.1] cm; mass: 76.0 [16.4] kg; 20% with c

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia symptoms cause a significant reduction in the ability to perform daily life activities. These activities require the ability to perform more than one task simultaneously. The main objective of this study was to evaluate how dual-task could modify range of movement, duration of repetitions and performance in the arm curl test in healthy controls and patients with fibromyalgia.
METHODS: Twenty women participated in this study, divided into two groups: 1) patients with fibromyalgia (N = 10, age = 52.00 [5.08]) and 2) age- and gender-matched healthy controls (N = 10; age

INTRODUCTION: Military personnel and civilian athletes are both at risk for mild traumatic brain injury. However, these groups are unique in their training and typical daily activities. A fundamental gap in the evaluation of military personnel following mild traumatic brain injury is the lack of military-specific normative reference data. This project aimed to determine if a separate normative sample should be used for military personnel on their performance of the Cleveland Clinic Concussion application and a recently developed dual-task module.
METHODS: Data were collected from healthy mili

INTRODUCTION: Early diagnosis of dementia may be improved by objective, scalable tests that capture how cognitive tasks interfere with movement. This study examined the use of instrumented dual-task paradigms for dementia detection and characterisation.
METHODS: We performed a PRISMA-guided systematic review and meta-analysis of peer-reviewed studies that used dual-task paradigms in adults with clinically defined dementia and an appropriate comparator. We extracted primary motor tasks, secondary cognitive or motor loads, sensor modalities, and analytic approaches. Walking outcomes were meta-a

Rhythmic auditory stimulation, a therapeutic method involving repetitive movements cued by rhythmic sounds, can support movement (re-)learning and attentional orienting, but effects vary. While properties of cues have been extensively studied, not much is known about the impact of individual differences in cognitive and motor abilities that enable sensorimotor synchronization. This study examined how stimulus complexity (metronome/music) and cognitive and motor functions affect tapping timing consistency and force. Fifty healthy young adults (ages 18-39) performed several finger tapping tasks,

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive-motor functioning in persons with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS) may be studied effectively by means of dual-task paradigms, under which potential impairments may become more salient. However, the influence of task sequencing, i.e., the order in which a cognitive or motor task is administered prior to the dual-task condition remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate potential task-sequencing effects, as reflected in fatigue or learning effects across single- and dual-task conditions.
METHODS: A total of 152 PwMS with an average EDSS of 2.3 were quasi-randomly assigne
