Westermarck's theory of incest taboo states that inhibition of sexual attraction between biologically close relatives is situational and develops during co-residence in early childhood. By contrast, the biological (genetic) basis of incest taboo is presumed from its universality in all human societies and animals and teleologically, from the need to prevent the detrimental effects of inbreeding. As incest taboo violation is infrequent, the frequency of the presumed gene in the population is believed to be near 100%. We present arguments which suggest that the incestuous gene may exist in all p

The Duffy (Fy) antigens act as receptors for chemokines as well as for Plasmodium vivax to invade human RBCs. A recent study has correlated the occurrence of the FY*A allele of Duffy gene with decreased susceptibility to vivax malaria, but no epidemiological correlation between the distribution of FY*A allele and incidences of vivax malaria has been established so far. Furthermore, if such correlations exist, whether natural selection has mediated the association, is an important question. Since India is highly endemic to P. vivax malaria with variable eco-climatic and varying vivax malaria ep

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The complex history of genetic admixture in Latin American populations creates unique erythrocyte antigen profiles. This study aimed to determine the extended red blood cell (RBC) antigen frequencies in a blood donor population from Southwestern Colombia, a region with significant African ancestral heritage, to support phenotype-matched transfusion strategies and optimize donor selection.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 501 voluntary blood donors at a highly complex hospital blood bank in Cali, Colombia. Extended serological phenotyping for

Blood group antigens are red blood cell (RBC) surface markers comprising specific carbohydrate moieties attached to the glycolipids and glycoproteins within the membrane. In addition to the major ABO blood group antigens, at least 35 minor blood group antigens have been defined to date. These antigens have immunogenic potential and may cause a transfusion reaction. There is evidence for renal expression of antigens from the Kidd, MNS, Duffy and Lewis groups and therefore the potential for antibodies directed against these antigens to cross-react in a transplanted kidney. In individuals lacking

INTRODUCTION: There are scarce data on Indian blood donors with respect to blood group phenotypes using molecular diagnostic modalities. Hence, we planned to estimate frequencies of blood group alleles/phenotypes using DNA microarray analysis in the north Indian RhD-negative blood donor population. With this initial pilot study, we plan to expand it to our entire donor population.
METHODOLOGY: The cross-sectional prospective study was conducted on 50 Indian blood donors (O RhD negative), to study the blood group genotype frequency. Genotyping for the most relevant red blood cell antigens (Rh,

PURPOSE: Duffy-null associated neutrophil count (DANC), formerly known as benign ethnic neutropenia, is seen in people of African and Middle Eastern descent and does not represent a true neutropenic state. Individuals with DANC can be identified by the Duffy-null phenotype on red cells. There is evidence that cancer patients with DANC are not at an increased risk of infection with chemotherapy. The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of DANC among patients with breast cancer of Middle Eastern ethnicity and to study treatment delays, infectious complications, and survival in these

Plasmodium vivax malaria poses a major global health challenge, fueled by the parasite's ability to establish chronic infections via dormant liver hypnozoites that enable immune evasion and show transmission resilience. A key virulence determinant of P. vivax blood-stage infection is the ligand-receptor interaction of infected erythrocytes mediated by the Duffy Binding Protein (PvDBP) ligand. Gene duplication events leading to increased PvDBP copy numbers have been documented in parasite populations in Cambodia, Brazil, and Sudan, but whether such changes exist in Indian isolates is not known.

Malaria is among the oldest of diseases. In one form or another, it has infected and affected our ancestors since long before the origin of the human line. During our recent evolution, its influence has probably been greater than that of any other infectious agent. Here we attempt to trace the forms and impacts of malaria from a distant past through historical times to the present. In the last sections, we review the current burdens of malaria across the world and discuss present-day approaches to its management. Only by following, or attempting to follow, malaria throughout its evolution and

The authors report the results of blood group determinations in a 9-year-old girl in whom two populations of erythrocytes were discovered. The larger population accounting for nearly 80% of erythrocytes contained the antigen A2, the smaller population had the B antigen. Besides that differences were observed in the antigens of Duffy and Lewis systems. In the saliva A and H antigens were revealed. Familial investigations indicated the participation of two gametes of maternal origin (mother--AB, father--O) although no evidence of twin pregnancy was available. The cause of this chimaerism has not

Background Alloimmunization of erythrocytes is a major problem in patients with hematological diseases that require frequent blood transfusions. Matching of extended red cell antigens of Kell, MNS, Kidd, and Duffy can decrease the risk of alloimmunization. Hence, in this study, the frequencies of the extended red cell phenotypes were explored. Objective To find out the frequency of extended red blood cell antigen phenotypes among patients with hematological diseases. Methods This cross-sectional research study was performed on 488 patients diagnosed with hematological diseases who required blo

Clozapine is licenced for treatment-resistant schizophrenia and psychosis in Parkinson's disease. In the United Kingdom, there is a mandatory requirement for absolute neutrophil count (ANC) and white blood cell count (WBC) monitoring to safeguard against agranulocytosis. Some people have naturally low ANCs without increased infection risk, caused by a homozygous T > C variant in ACKR1, commonly called the Duffy-null genotype. This condition is known as ADAN (ACKR1/DARC-associated neutropenia) and synonyms include DANC (Duffy-null associated neutrophil count) and BEN (benign ethnic neutropenia)

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium vivax has been more resistant to various control measures than Plasmodium falciparum malaria because of its greater transmissibility and ability to produce latent parasite forms. Therefore, developing P. vivax vaccines and therapeutic monoclonal antibodies (humAbs) remains a high priority. The Duffy antigen receptor for chemokines (DARC) expressed on erythrocytes is central to P. vivax invasion of reticulocytes. P. vivax expresses a Duffy binding protein (PvDBP) on merozoites, a DARC ligand, and the DARC: PvDBP interaction is critical for P. vivax blood stage malaria. Th

A murine monoclonal antibody, named anti-Fy6, which agglutinates all human red cells except those of Fy(a-b) phenotype was used for purification and characterization of Duffy antigens. Duffy antigens are multimeric red cell membrane proteins composed of different subunits of which only one, designated pD protein, reacts in immunoblots with the murine monoclonal antibody anti-Fy6. Affinity-purified detergent-soluble antigen-antibody complex obtained from red cells, surface-labeled with 125I yielded a complex pattern of bands when separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Since many common clinically significant RBC antigens are also small protein variations, this study aimed to determine if MS/MS could correctly detect common RBC antigens within the Rh, Kell, Duffy, MNS, Kidd, Diego, and Lutheran blood group systems.

OBJECTIVE: Conventional serologic typing of red blood cell systems other than ABO and RhD can be inaccurate and difficult to interpret in patients who have recently undergone blood transfusion. While molecular-based assays are not used routinely, the usefulness of genotyping was investigated in order to determine patients who may benefit from this procedure.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Blood samples were taken from 101 patients with haemato-oncological, chronic renal, or gastroenterological diseases and from 50 donor controls; the samples were tested for Fya and Fyb by applying serologic and genet

Antibody-mediated rejection (ABMR) due to non-HLA alloantibodies has gained substantial attention in transplantation research. One candidate for such non-HLA reactivity is the Duffy blood group carrier molecule DARC, which is not only expressed on erythrocytes, but also on kidney microvascular endothelial cells and is postulated as a potential transplantation-relevant alloantigen. However, in vivo observation of anti-Duffy antibodies as trigger of microvascular inflammation (MVI) is lacking. Here we propose a direct relationship between preformed anti-Duffy (anti-Fya) antibodies, complement de

BACKGROUND: The Duffy binding ligand domain of Plasmodium vivax (PvDBPII) interacts with Duffy blood-group antigen on the surface of reticulocytes during host cell invasion process. Although diversity of this domain has been analysed among worldwide isolates, the evolution of the complete PvDBP gene remains to be explored.
METHODS: In total, 232 P. vivax isolates from northwestern, northeastern, eastern, and southern Thailand were included for analyses of the complete gene sequence, copy number variation and duplication genotypes of Pvdbp. The Duffy blood-group genotypes of the patient were a

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disease caused by a single mutation in the β-globin gene, leading to the production of an abnormal hemoglobin called hemoglobin S (HbS), which polymerizes under deoxygenation, and induces the sickling of red blood cells (RBCs). Sickled RBCs are very fragile and rigid, and patients consequently become anemic and develop frequent and recurrent vaso-occlusive crises. However, it is now evident that SCD is not only a RBC rheological disease. Accumulating evidence shows that SCD is also characterized by the presence of chronic inflammation and oxidative stress

Plasmodium vivax requires interaction with the Duffy antigen receptor for chemokines (DARC) to enable its invasion of human erythrocytes. Interaction with DARC is mediated by the P. vivax Duffy-binding protein (PvDBP) and is essential for junction formation, which is a key step in the invasion process. The receptor-binding domain of PvDBP maps to a conserved cysteine-rich region, referred to as region II (PvRII). Here, we review data on the interaction of PvRII with DARC and explore the potential of targeting this crucial receptor-ligand interaction to develop new intervention strategies again
