Auditory performance in bald eagles and red-tailed hawks: a comparative study of hearing in diurnal raptors.

Collision with wind turbines is a conservation concern for eagles with population abundance implications. The development of acoustic alerting technologies to deter eagles from entering hazardous air spaces is a potentially significant mitigation strategy to diminish associated morbidity and mortality risks. As a prelude to the engineering of deterrence technologies, auditory function was assessed in bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), as well as in red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis). Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) to a comprehensive battery of clicks and tone bursts varying in leve

Relationships among mercury, selenium, and neurochemical parameters in common loons (Gavia immer) and bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus).

Fish-eating birds can be exposed to levels of dietary methylmercury (MeHg) known or suspected to adversely affect normal behavior and reproduction, but little is known regarding Hg's subtle effects on the avian brain. In the current study, we explored relationships among Hg, Se, and neurochemical receptors and enzymes in two fish-eating birds--common loons (Gavia immer) and bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). In liver, both species demonstrated a wide range of total Hg (THg) concentrations, substantial demethylation of MeHg, and a co-accumulation of Hg and Se. In liver, there were molar ex

Eagle's syndrome with neck discomfort: A report of three cases.

Eagle's syndrome, or ES, is associated with the elongation of the styloid process and partial or complete mineralization of the stylohyoid ligament. Clinically, the symptoms of ES are characterized by sore throat, neck pain radiating to the ear, dysphagia, and a foreign body sensation when swallowing, resulting from disruption of the neck or pharyngeal region. This report describes 3 male patients (40, 60, and 43 years old) with neck discomfort. These patients were inadvertently diagnosed with ES using multidetector computer tomography and 3-dimensional volumetric computed tomography (MDCT-3D

Delayed Unilateral Eagle Syndrome with Fractured Styloid Process.

PURPOSE: Minor injury to head and neck is usually neglected for potential neurological consequences. We report a woman who suffered left Eagle syndrome due to styloid process fracture two years after a minor motorcycle collision. CASE REPORT: A 53-year-old woman complained pain at her left upper neck, lower face and periauricular area after minor motorcycle collision at 2 years ago. The pain usually occurred spontaneously but was occasionally triggered or exacerbated by specific postural changes, including looking up or turning head to right side. Moreover, a foreign body sensation occurred a

Anesthetic Management of a Patient With Eagle's Syndrome: A Case Study.

Eagle's syndrome is a condition characterized by elongation of the styloid process or calcification of the styloid ligament that can manifest as a constellation of symptoms including dysphagia, globus sensation, hoarseness, headache, and neck pain. Anatomically, this can impinge neurovascular structures, distort the hypopharynx, and stiffen the epiglottis and other pharyngeal structures, increasing the difficulty of airway management. The objective of this case study was to discuss the features of Eagle's syndrome and anesthetic considerations in the management of the condition. Intubation may

Of Eagle's Syndrome and Finding Some Clarity on Its Management.

Eagle's Syndrome is a much discussed yet controversial and debatable diagnosis of exclusion which is treated by many specialities with often unsatisfactory results. Due to entrapment/impingement on surrounding neurovascular structures by elongated styloid process patient may present with multitude of symptoms. Treatment is controversial and opinions are divided on choice of conservative and surgical management. Aim was to study outcomes of conservative and surgical modalities of treatment of Eagle's Syndrome and bring some clarity on management, what to offer, to whom and when. This prospectiv

Eagle's Syndrome Managed Successfully by Pulsed Radiofrequency Treatment.

Eagle's syndrome is a rare cause of craniofacial pain caused by impingement of adjacent neurovascular elements by an elongated styloid process or by a calcified stylohyoid ligament. There is a wide spectrum of clinical presentations, which encompasses craniofacial pain, oropharyngeal pain, otalgia, headache, and vertigo. Typically, the glossopharyngeal nerve gets entrapped, giving rise to characteristic orofacial pain. The diagnosis of Eagle's syndrome is confirmed radiologically, and the management includes pharmacotherapy and surgical removal of the styloid process. Moreover, minimally invas

Poxvirus infection in a Steller's sea eagle (Haliaeetus pelagicus).

A severely emaciated adult Steller's sea eagle (Haliaeetus pelagicus) was found dead with electrocution-induced severe wing laceration, and with multiple cutaneous pock nodules at the periocular regions of both sides nearby the medial canthi and rhamphotheca. Histopathological examination of the nodules revealed hyperplasia of the epidermis with vacuolar degeneration and intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies (Bollinger bodies). The proventriculus was severely affected by nematodes and was ulcerated. Nucleotide sequencing of a PCR-amplified product of Avipoxvirus 4b core gene revealed 100% identity

Solvent-pore interactions in the Eagle Ford shale formation.

The effect of solvent extraction on pore space was examined on a suite of samples from the Eagle Ford Shale Formation with varying lithologies and maturities. Several solvents ─toluene, cyclohexane, methanol, dichloromethane, and hydrochloric acid─ were contacted with shale samples, extracting the compatible organic matter. The porosity in these extracted shale samples was compared to unmodified samples. The amount and type of organic matter extracted were determined using Gas Chromatography ─ Mass Spectrometry, and the porosity was determined by (Ultra) Small Angle Neutron Scattering. Mostly

Ischemic Stroke Secondary to Stylocarotid Variant of Eagle Syndrome.

Eagle syndrome is a rare cause of stroke and results as a complication of the elongated styloid process (ESP), which can cause carotid dissection and consequent ischemic stroke. We report a case of a 42-year-old woman with a past medical history of rheumatoid arthritis who developed left hemispheric ischemic stroke after deep tissue massage. Imaging studies revealed an intimal tear of the left carotid artery bulb and bilaterally ESPs, measuring approximately 6 cm on the right and 4.5 cm on the left. It seems that direct vascular compromise by the anomalous styloid process was the cause of her

Carotid artery dissection: a rare complication of Eagle syndrome.

Carotid artery dissection is a significant cause of ischaemic stroke in all age groups and accounts for a large percentage of strokes in young patients. Carotid dissection can be caused by trauma, underlying connective tissue disease, hypertension, mechanical injury or can be spontaneous. We present an exceedingly rare case of carotid dissection caused by an elongated styloid process, causing direct mechanical damage to the carotid artery.

A case of unilateral atypical orofacial pain with Eagle's syndrome.

Eagle's syndrome is not an uncommon condition, but less known to physicians, where an elongated styloid process or calcified stylohyoid ligament compresses the adjacent anatomical structures leading to orofacial pain. Diagnosis is made with appropriate radiological examination. Nonsurgical treatment options include reassurance, analgesia, and anti.inflammatory medications; and the surgical option includes a transoral or external approach. Here, we present a case report of a male patient, of age38 years, with a chief complaint of unilateral atypical orofacial pain on the right side of his face

Nonsurgical treatment of stylohyoid (Eagle) syndrome: a case report.

Eagle syndrome is a rare condition caused by elongation of the styloid process or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament. Patients with Eagle syndrome typically present with dysphagia, dysphonia, cough, voice changes, otalgia, sore throat, facial pain, foreign body sensation, headache, vertigo, and neck pain. Here we report a case in which the patient initially presented with sore throat, left-sided facial pain, and cough. This case report provides a brief review of the diagnosis and nonsurgical management of this rare syndrome.

Non Surgical Treatment of Eagle's Syndrome - A Case Report -.

Eagle's syndrome is a disease without a clear lesion that is associated with repeated episodes of pharyngalgia, odynophagia, the sensation of a foreign body in the pharynx, tinnitus, and otalgia in which patients displaying these types of symptoms must be given a differential diagnosis. It is known to be characterized by styloid process elongation or increasing compression to adjacent anatomical structures through stylohyoid ligament calcification. In serious cases, continuous pressure to the carotid artery can lead to a stroke. Diagnosis is confirmed through clinical symptoms, radiological fi

Complete recovery after an intraoral approach for Eagle syndrome.

Eagle syndrome is considered a rare disease. It is an aggregation of symptoms that includes neck, throat, and hemifacial pain; sensation of foreign body in the throat; dysphagia; otalgia; and change in voice as a direct result of an elongated styloid process or calcified stylohyoid ligament. The clinical diagnosis is generally difficult and must be confirmed by radiologic imaging. Our patient was a 37-year-old woman who had a 3 years' history of dysphagia and foreign body sensation. Computed tomographic scan showed a long left styloid process and calcification in the upper part of the stylohyoi
