Ear manifestations of connective tissue diseases: A dermatologic, histopathologic, and clinicopathologic review.

Connective tissue diseases comprise a spectrum of autoimmune disorders characterized by chronic inflammation and immune-mediated injury affecting the skin, vasculature, cartilage, and internal organs. The external ear, owing to its unique composition of elastic cartilage, thin dermis, and end-arterial vasculature, represents a visible and diagnostically informative site of connective tissue disease involvement. Auricular lesions may manifest as erythematous chondritis, purpura, necrosis, nodules, or sclerotic plaques, often providing dermatologists with early clinical clues to systemic disease

Deep learning multi-classification of middle ear diseases using synthetic tympanic images.

BACKGROUND: Recent advances in artificial intelligence have facilitated the automatic diagnosis of middle ear diseases using endoscopic tympanic membrane imaging. AIM: We aimed to develop an automated diagnostic system for middle ear diseases by applying deep learning techniques to tympanic membrane images obtained during routine clinical practice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To augment the training dataset, we explored the use of generative adversarial networks (GANs) to produce high-quality synthetic tympanic images that were subsequently added to the training data. Between 2016 and 2021, we col

Finite element analysis of auditory characteristics in patients with middle ear diseases.

CONCLUSION: This study validates that a finite element model of the human ossicular chain and tympanic membrane can be used as an effective surgical assessment tool in clinics. OBJECTIVE: The present study was performed to investigate the application of a finite element model of ossicular chain and tympanic membrane for fabrication of individualized artificial ossicles. METHODS: Twenty patients (20 ears) who underwent surgery for middle ear disease (n = 20) and 10 healthy controls (10 ears) were enrolled in the hospital. Computed tomography (CT) and pure tone audiometry were performed before

Ear, nose and throat (ENT) involvement in zoonotic diseases: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Zoonoses are infections transmitted from animal to man, either directly (through direct contact or contact with animal products) or indirectly (through an intermediate vector, such as an arthropod). The causative agents include bacteria, parasites, viruses, and fungi. The purpose of this review is to make an accurate examination of all zoonotic diseases that can be responsible of ear, nose, and throat (ENT) involvement. METHODOLOGY: A PubMed search was performed combining the terms (otorhinolaryngology OR rhinology OR laryngology OR otology OR mastoiditis OR otitis OR sinusitis

Auditory function in women with autoimmune inner ear diseases and their offspring.

OBJECTIVE: The precise cause of congenital sensorineural hearing loss (CSNHL) is unclear in many cases. In a previous study we found that offspring from guinea pigs with autoimmune sensorineural hearing loss (ASNHL) exhibited signs of SNHL. Here we studied women with autoimmune inner ear diseases (AIED) and their offspring. Our aim was to determine if autoimmune damage may be one of the causes of CSNHL. METHODS: Thirty-eight pregnant women with AIED were recruited. Thirty-three had ASNHL; one with autoimmune delayed endolymphatic hydrops (ADEH) and four with autoimmune Meniere's disease (AIMD

Immune-mediated inner ear disease.

The incidence of autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED) is difficult to determine: probably it is a rare disease, accounting for <1% of all cases of hearing impairment or dizziness. Nevertheless, the diagnosis of AIED might be overlooked because of the lack of a specific diagnostic test. The hallmark of this clinically diagnosed condition is the presence of a rapidly progressive, often fluctuating, bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) over a period of weeks to months. The progression of hearing loss is too rapid to be diagnostic for presbycusis and too slow to conclude a diagnosis of sudde

Immune-mediated inner ear disease.

Immune-mediated inner ear disease (IMIED) is a syndrome that includes the subacute onset of sensorineural hearing loss, often accompanied by vertigo and tinnitus. This constellation of symptoms may occur as a primary disorder in which no other organ involvement is evident, or it may complicate certain systemic conditions, including Wegener's granulomatosis, Cogan's syndrome, polyarteritis nodosa, and systemic lupus erythematosus. The precise disease mechanisms remain undefined, largely because of the difficulty obtaining relevant tissue specimens in untreated patients. However, if treated prom

Lasers in surgery for chronic ear disease.

This article describes specific situations in which the laser has been found to be useful in surgery for chronic ear disease. In the opinion of the authors, the most important application is the atraumatic removal of cholesteatoma from a mobile stapes. Additional uses include precise and hemostatic removal of diseased tissue (polyps, granulations, adhesions) and manipulations upon an intact ossicular chain without induction of vibrational trauma. Potential complications such as facial nerve and inner ear injury are considered.

Impedance screening for middle ear disease.

Pure tone audiometry has hitherto been employed as the sole means of indentifying ear pathology. During the last decade it has been demonstrated that even hearing which is normal according to pure tone sweep check screening audiometry (20 dB) can be associated with middle ear pathology. With the intention of identifying cochlear as well as middle ear pathology, a study was initiated in which pure tone testing was combined with impedance measurements as a screening test. The intention has been to determine a screening level at which pathology is identified and the number of false-positive is mi

Tomography of the vestibular aqueduct in ear disease.

A controversy exists concerning whether or not roentgenographic narrowing or nonvisualization of the vestibular aqueduct is a specific sign for Meniere's disease. Of 190 ears that were evaluated, abnormal aqueducts were seen in 42.9% of ears with Meniere's disease, 45.4% of contralateral, noninvolved ears from patients with Meniere's disease, 41.3% of ears with diseases other than Meniere's disease, 30.4% of ears with no disease, and 51.6% of normal ears. Narrowing or nonvisualization of the vestibular aqueduct is a nonspecific roentgenographic sign that is seen in diseased, as well as in norm

[The ossification of the ear cartilage in Addison's disease].

Stiffening and tenderness of the helix of the ear, with radiologically demonstrable calcific deposits, has been reported in various conditions such as frostbite, and also in Addison's disease. To a total of 14 clinical observations with only 4 well documented cases, a first autopsy report of the disorder in a case of tuberculosus Addison's disease is added. It is shown that the elastic cartilage of the pinna, of the epiglottis and of the trachea undergoes ossification without preceding dystrophic or metastatic calcification. The ossification has been observed only in males with longstanding Ad
