Diagnosis and Management of Middle Ear Neuroendocrine Tumour (MeNET).

Middle ear neuroendocrine tumours (MeNETs) are rare epithelial neoplasms with neuroendocrine differentiation that pose significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The clinical presentation of MeNETs is often nonspecific and can mimic other middle ear pathologies, such as chronic otitis media, cholesteatoma, or paraganglioma Common symptoms include conductive hearing loss, otalgia, intermittent or persistent tinnitus, ear fullness, and dizziness. We present five patients who underwent surgery in our University Otolaryngology Centre between 2019 and 2025, in whom histopathological examina

Middle ear adenoma with neuroendocrine differentiation : A pediatric case report.

BACKGROUND: Middle ear adenoma with neuroendocrine differentiation (MEA-ND), also known as carcinoid tumor of the middle ear, is an extremely rare neoplasm, especially when located within the tympanic cavity. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first pediatric case of a MEA-ND described in Europe. Excluding the present case, only three other pediatric cases of this disease have been published globally. CASE REPORT: We report on a 15-year-old female patient who presented with conductive hearing loss of the right ear. A tympanogram was flat. Ear microscopy revealed bulging of the

Sinonasal Glomangiopericytoma: A Report of Two Cases.

Sinonasal glomangiopericytoma (GPC) is a rare mesenchymal tumor that is seen exclusively in the sinonasal region, which shows perivascular myoid differentiation. Here, we describe two cases of sinonasal glomangiopericytoma. The first case was a 62-year-old female patient with right-sided nasal obstruction and headache. Endoscopic examination revealed a polypoid mass in the right nostril. Surgical removal revealed spindle cell proliferation with staghorn vasculature surrounded by perivascular hyalinization beneath an intact ciliated respiratory epithelium. Tumor cells were reactive to smooth mu

Scientific considerations for evaluating cancer bioassays conducted by the Ramazzini Institute.

BACKGROUND: The Ramazzini Institute (RI) has completed nearly 400 cancer bioassays on > 200 compounds. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and others have suggested that study design and protocol differences between the RI and other laboratories by may contribute to controversy regarding cancer hazard findings, principally findings on lymphoma/leukemia diagnoses. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate RI study design, protocol differences, and accuracy of tumor diagnoses for their impact on carcinogenic hazard characterization. METHODS: We analyzed the findings from a recent Pathology Working

Myoepithelial Carcinoma of the External Auditory Canal With Extension Into the Middle Ear and Mastoid.

Myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare disease of the head and neck, with only a handful of cases reported occurring within the external auditory canal, middle ear, and mastoid. The patient discussed is a 67-year-old male with a prior history of a bilateral tympanomastoidectomy for cholesteatoma and a prior history of left parotidectomy and adjuvant radiation for pleomorphic sarcoma. Three years after the parotidectomy, the patient presented with contralateral ear fullness. During an intraoperative examination, a fibrous mass was encountered, which revealed an invasive salivary gland neoplasm, myoe

Lumpy, bumpy guinea pigs: a retrospective study of 619 biopsy samples of externally palpable masses submitted from pet guinea pigs for histopathology.

Biopsy data on externally palpable masses in pet guinea pigs were retrieved from the archives of a large commercial pathology laboratory between November 2013 and July 2021. Of the 619 samples submitted from 493 animals, 54 (8.7%) had arisen from the mammary glands and 15 (2.4%) from the thyroid glands, with the remaining 550 (88.9%) involving the skin and subcutis, muscle (n = 1), salivary glands (n = 4), lips (n = 2), ears (n = 4) and peripheral lymph nodes (n = 23). Most of the samples were neoplastic, with 99 masses classified as epithelial in origin, 347 as mesenchymal, 23 as round cell,

Primary Cutaneous Acral CD8+ T-cell Lymphoma Induced by Persistent Delayed Hypersensitivity to Gold Earrings.

Primary cutaneous CD8+ T-cell lymphoma has been included as a provisional entity within the new revised classification of lymphoid neoplasms of the World Health Organization in 20161. It was initially described as indolent CD8+ lymphoid proliferation of the ear2 and a total of 29 cases of such neoplasm have been published in the literature so far. None of them have been linked to delayed contact hypersensitivity reactions. We present a case of acral type primary cutaneous lymphoma T CD8+ involving both earlobes clearly related with the prolonged use of gold earrings, confirmed with epicutaneou

Second Primary Malignancies following a Diagnosis of Conjunctival Melanoma.

BACKGROUND: Although incidence of second primary malignancies (SPMs) has been investigated in patients with cutaneous melanoma and uveal melanoma, limited studies have investigated their occurrence subsequent to conjunctival melanoma (CM). We conducted a retrospective observational study to assess incidence of SPMs in patients with primary CM and to identify associated risk factors. METHODS: Cases of first primary CM diagnosed from 2000 to 2018 were extracted from the national cancer database Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program. Significance of immune responses to mucosal carcinogens: a hypothesis and a workable model system.

Carcinogens must enter the tissues before neoplastic transformation of cells can occur. The present report describes the 2-AAF model system being used to test our hypothesis that development of mucosal immunity to carcinogens will interfere with their passage through mucosal epithelial cells. The 2-AAF model is ideal for testing this hypothesis. 2-AAF is a carcinogen which passes through the intestinal epithelium following oral administration, is transported to the liver and is there metabolized with the ultimate formation of hyperplastic nodules and neoplasms. Further, neoplasms form at other

Hearing loss associated with maxillectomy.

Little has been reported about the effect on auditory tube function of ablative surgery for maxillary neoplasms. Operations on the muscles of the soft palate may cause conductive hearing loss by impairing the opening of the auditory tube, which results in a middle ear effusion. Sensorineural hearing loss may also follow adjuvant radiotherapy. In this retrospective study we aimed to assess hearing status in patients who had undergone maxillary surgery for neoplastic disease between 1987 and 1997. Data recorded included personal details, site and size of lesion, treatment, and histology. Thirty-

Cochlear implantation in a patient after removal of an acoustic neuroma. The implications of magnetic resonance imaging with gadolinium on patient management.

The advent of magnetic resonance imaging has allowed otologists to focus on the early removal of acoustic neuromas with the goal of hearing preservation. Clearly, there are some unpredictable factors, such as placement of the tumor in the medial vs the lateral segment of the internal auditory canal and the capricious nature of the blood supply to these benign neoplasms, that make prediction of hearing preservation difficult. Nonetheless, the present goal of surgery for removal of acoustic tumors has changed its focus from preservation of the facial nerve alone to preservation of the facial ner

Acoustic neuroma in an adolescent without neurofibromatosis: case study.

When acoustic neuromas are found in younger age groups, they are typically bilateral and associated with neurofibromatosis (NF). A unilateral acoustic neuroma in a child or adolescent without NF is rare. We report audiometric, auditory brainstem response (ABR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data for a 15-year-old male with an acoustic neuroma but without associated NF. The patient was seen for audiologic assessment on three separate occasions over a period of 5 years. The first two assessments produced unremarkable audiometric and immittance data. The third assessment, subsequent to a fa

Uncommon Tumor, Unusual Site, and Unconventional Behavior: Report of a Gastric Composite Gangliocytoma/Neuroma and Neuroendocrine Tumor (CoGNET) With Metastases.

With the 2022 WHO Classification of Neuroendocrine Neoplasms1 came an important distinction between epithelial and non-epithelial neoplasms, and the possibility of composite tumor in certain organs, including the duodenum, the spine and the middle ear. In particular, the formerly termed gangliocytic paraganglioma of the duodenum has been renamed as "composite gangliocytoma/neuroma and neuroendocrine tumor (CoGNET)." We present an unusual CoGNET arising in the stomach, displaying distinctive histomorphologies in primary tumor and metastases. Additionally, we discuss diagnostic pitfalls and high

Cholesterol granuloma of the jaws: report of two cases.

Cholesterol granuloma (CG) is a foreign body reaction to the deposition and inadequate drainage of cholesterol crystals that are frequently found in association with chronic middle ear diseases but an uncommon entity in maxillary sinuses. The clinical symptoms are non-specific and depend on the localization and extent in each individual case. Bone erosion may be seen in cholesterol granuloma showing expansive growth. The differential diagnosis of CG includes cysts, mucocoeles and neoplasms. Radiological and histopathological findings are essential for diagnosis of CG. In this report it is aime
