Otitis media.

Earache, a common symptom in children, causes many parents to seek medical attention. Aside from trauma and the discomfort that often accompanies viral infections of the upper respiratory tract, acute otitis media with effusion is the commonest cause of otalgia in infants and children. Proper management requires a team effort between the physician and the child's parents or caretaker. The physician must transmit to the parents a concise but thorough overview of the problem and a plan for management. This should include information on the pathophysiology of ear disease, its incidence, therapy a

Referred otalgia: a structured approach to diagnosis and treatment.

Many patients who present with otalgia have a normal otological examination, and a distant source of pain must be considered. The ear receives an extensive sensory innervation arising from six nerve roots. Many other structures in the head, neck and thorax share a common neuronal pathway with the ear, and these tissues represent the possible sites of disease in the cases of referred otalgia. Consequently, the differential diagnosis is extensive and varied. Making an accurate diagnosis relies on an understanding of the complex distribution of nerve fibres and a structured approach to patient as

Otalgia in children.

Otalgia is a common symptom in the pediatric age group. The most common cause is acute otitis media, followed by otitis externa. In the majority of cases, the diagnosis can be established by a thorough history and a careful otologic examination. When the otologic findings are normal and the etiology is obscure, a thorough work-up to determine the source of referred pain is essential. Laboratory investigations are usually not necessary. Treatment should always be directed at the underlying cause.

Evaluation of traditional uses, phytochemical constituents, therapeutic uses and future prospects of Pyracantha genus: a systematic review.

The Pyracantha genus consists of evergreen shrubs distributed from Southeast Europe to South-East Asia. They are found in geographical regions of India, China, and South West Europe. They are used in traditional medicines against earache, menstrual cycles, constipation etc. The genus is pharmacologically significant because of its antioxidant and antimicrobial effects. The genus also acts as a biomonitor species for heavy metals and bio sorbent in wastewater treatment. The review aims to present an overview of four species of the Pyracantha genus -P. crenulata, P. fortuneana, and P. coccinea a

Cochlear implantation and facial nerve anastomosis to rehabilitate a burnt middle ear.

A 48-year-old man presented to the ENT department of a general hospital after a traumatic event that occurred at work. During arc welding, an incandescent metallic projectile entered the left external auditory canal immediately causing earache, tinnitus, hearing loss, vertigo, and completed peripheral facial palsy on the left side. A burnt middle ear is a rare situation for which very few cases are described in the literature. We describe and discuss our therapeutic strategy in an emergency setting. This can be of interest to any ENT surgeon who may face such a case of ear burn. Then we report

Why do patients with fibromyalgia complain of ear-related symptoms? Ear-related symptoms and otological findings in patients with fibromyalgia.

While fibromyalgia is frequently associated with ear-related symptoms such as feeling of ear fullness, earache, and tinnitus, the pathogenesis of these ear-related symptoms in fibromyalgia patients is unknown. Here, we focused on clarifying the pathogenesis of ear fullness, a particularly common symptom observed in fibromyalgia patients. Twenty patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia on outpatient psychosomatic treatment complaining of ear-related symptoms answered our questionnaire and underwent neurotological examination, including pure tone audiometry and Eustachian tube function testing. A 53-Year-Old Woman with Ear Pain and Facial Weakness.

AbstractMorning Report is a time-honored tradition in which physicians-in-training present cases to their colleagues and clinical experts to collaboratively examine an interesting patient presentation. The Morning Report section seeks to carry on this tradition by presenting a patient's chief concern and story, inviting the reader to develop a differential diagnosis and discover the diagnosis alongside the authors of the case. This report examines the story of a 53-year-old woman who sought evaluation for pain in both ears, hearing loss, and facial weakness. Using questions, physical examinati

An unusual case of a sore throat and otalgia in a 4-year-old boy.

A sore throat, otalgia, and snoring are the common symptoms seen in children presenting to an otorhinolaryngological clinic. Sometimes, however, these symptoms may be suggestive of an aggressive malignancy. We present a rare case of Burkitt's lymphoma of the tonsil in a young child, which initially manifested as a sore throat and otalgia.

[Correlation between myoarthropathies of the masticatory system and ear symptoms (otalgia, tinnitus)].

Speculations concerning a possible association between temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and ear symptoms of otalgia and tinnitus have been made in the dental and medical literature for a long time. Current understanding of this association is reviewed. An analysis of relevant studies published between 1947 and 1996 shows that a relatively high percentage of TMD patients reported the presence of ear pain and noise. However, a cause-effect relationship has not been established to date. Theories that try to explain the concurrence of TMD symptoms and ear symptoms (particularly tinnitus) by a co

An chronic otitis media with effusion complicated with paravertebral abscess: Case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic otitis media are still present and often overlooked. Our observation is interesting by the association of double purulent complications of chronic otitis media: paravertebral abscess and lateral sinus thrombosis. CASE: We report the case of a 54-year-old man with a long history of NPC, who presented to the hospital with severe right earache, associated with headache and 39°fever. CT scan and MRI assessed a complicated chronic otitis media of the middle ear by thrombophlebitis of the lateral sinus and posterior paravertebral abscess. He was put under antibiotic therapy an

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma at the base of the tongue presented with metastatic disease in the absence of myoepithelial anaplasia.

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a biphasic low-grade malignant tumor that shows ductal structures lined by the ductal cells with surrounding myoepithelial cells. EMC is most commonly reported in the parotid gland followed by other major and minor salivary glands. EMC of the tongue is an extremely uncommon tumor, with only five previously published case reports. We herein report the sixth case of EMC of the tongue. A 40-year-old female who had throat pain, dysphagia, and right earache for 3 years showed a 4 cm × 4 cm nodular tumor at the base of her tongue. Histopathological and imm

If one is searching for a perfect example of why the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 was needed, this 1901 SWANSON'S RHEUMATIC CURE CO. foldover brochure would fit the bill (Figures 1A, 1B, and 1C). The SWANSON "FIVE DROP" REMEDIES were heralded as "the faithful guardian and sentinel of the human system" that "stands at the door and challenges every germ that knocks for admittance." Acute otitis media: making an accurate diagnosis.

The diagnosis of acute suppurative otitis media is not as easy and straightforward as it may seem. Many of the signs and symptoms in children with acute otitis media are also observed in children without it. Furthermore, several of the "classic" findings of acute otitis media, such as fever and earache, are often absent, even in cases confirmed by myringotomy. An otoscope with a fresh bulb and a good power source, as well as a view of the tympanic membrane that is not obstructed by cerumen, are essential to making the diagnosis of acute otitis media. A bulging, cloudy, immobile tympanic membra
