Effect of Exercise on Coronary Hemodynamics Under the Earth's Gravity and Microgravity Conditions: A CFD Study.

Exposure to microgravity affects the cardiovascular system and fluid distribution in the vasculature system of the human body depending on the short term or long term exposure. Literature suggests that in the initial few days in the microgravity environment, a short term exposure, the cardiac output and plasma volume are altered. Gradually, after about a week of long exposure to the microgravity environment, these parameters return to the same levels as those under the Earth's gravity. In this computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study, we investigate the effect of microgravity environment on co

Oxygen-Free Biochemistry: The Putative CHN Foundation for Exotic Life in a Hydrocarbon World?

Since Earth's biochemistry is carbon-based and water-borne, the main strategies for searching for life elsewhere are "follow the carbon" and "follow the water." Recently, however, there is a growing focus on the prospect that putative exotic life on other planets could rely on unearthly biochemistries. Here, we hypothesize a novel oxygen-free organic chemistry for supporting potential exotic biosystems, which is named CHN biochemistry. This oxygen-free CHN biochemistry starts from simple oxygen-free species (including hydrocarbons, hydrogen cyanide, and nitriles) and produces a range of functi

Origin of the terrestrial planets and the moon.

Our ideas about the origin and evolution of the solar system have advanced significantly as a result of the past 25 years of space exploration. Metal-sulfide-silicate partitioning seems to have been present in the early dust components of the solar nebula, prior to chondrule formation. The inner solar nebula was depleted in volatile elements by early solar activity. The early formation of the gas giant, Jupiter, affected the subsequent development of inner solar system and is responsible for the existence of the asteroid belt, and the small size of Mars. The Earth and the other terrestrial pla

The Physical Oceanography of Ice-Covered Moons.

In the outer solar system, a growing number of giant planet satellites are now known to be abodes for global oceans hidden below an outer layer of ice. These planetary oceans are a natural laboratory for studying physical oceanographic processes in settings that challenge traditional assumptions made for Earth's oceans. While some driving mechanisms are common to both systems, such as buoyancy-driven flows and tides, others, such as libration, precession, and electromagnetic pumping, are likely more significant for moons in orbit around a host planet. Here, we review these mechanisms and how t

Facing Trauma and Surgical Emergency in Space: Hemorrhagic Shock.

Although the risk of trauma in space is low, unpredictable events can occur that may require surgical treatment. Hemorrhage can be a life-threatening condition while traveling to another planet and after landing on it. These exploration missions call for a different approach than rapid return to Earth, which is the policy currently adopted on the International Space Station (ISS) in low Earth orbit (LEO). Consequences are difficult to predict, given the still scarce knowledge of human physiology in such environments. Blood loss in space can deplete the affected astronaut's physiological reserv

Possible climates on terrestrial exoplanets.

What kind of environment may exist on terrestrial planets around other stars? In spite of the lack of direct observations, it may not be premature to speculate on exoplanetary climates, for instance, to optimize future telescopic observations or to assess the probability of habitable worlds. To begin with, climate primarily depends on (i) the atmospheric composition and the volatile inventory; (ii) the incident stellar flux; and (iii) the tidal evolution of the planetary spin, which can notably lock a planet with a permanent night side. The atmospheric composition and mass depends on complex p

Experimental Evidence for a Microbial Origin of Reduction Spots in Red Beds on Earth-and Mars?

The Perseverance rover recently discovered sedimentary rocks reddened by ferric oxides and peppered with bleached spots lacking these oxides. Some of these spots are associated with phosphate, iron sulfide minerals, and organic matter and are regarded as "potential biosignatures," suggestive of microbial iron- and sulfate-reduction and organic matter oxidation. Similar millimeter-centimeter-scale "reduction spots" occur in many ancient red beds on Earth. Although terrestrial reduction spots are widely considered biogenic, the available evidence is not decisive, and the proposed microbial mecha

From amino acid mixtures to peptides in liquid sulphur dioxide on early Earth.

The formation of peptide bonds is one of the most important biochemical reaction steps. Without the development of structurally and catalytically active polymers, there would be no life on our planet. However, the formation of large, complex oligomer systems is prevented by the high thermodynamic barrier of peptide condensation in aqueous solution. Liquid sulphur dioxide proves to be a superior alternative for copper-catalyzed peptide condensations. Compared to water, amino acids are activated in sulphur dioxide, leading to the incorporation of all 20 proteinogenic amino acids into proteins. S

Prebiotically Plausible Organocatalysts Enabling a Selective Photoredox α-Alkylation of Aldehydes on the Early Earth.

Organocatalysis is a powerful approach to extend and (enantio-) selectively modify molecular structures. Adapting this concept to the Early Earth scenario offers a promising solution to explain their evolution into a complex homochiral world. Herein, we present a class of imidazolidine-4-thione organocatalysts, easily accessible from simple molecules available on an Early Earth under highly plausible prebiotic reaction conditions. These imidazolidine-4-thiones are readily formed from mixtures of aldehydes or ketones in presence of ammonia, cyanides and hydrogen sulfide in high selectivity and

Role of ferrocyanides in the prebiotic synthesis of α-amino acids.

We investigated the synthesis of α-amino acids under possible prebiotic terrestrial conditions in the presence of dissolved iron (II) in a simulated prebiotic ocean. An aerosol-liquid cycle with a prebiotic atmosphere is shown to produce amino acids via Strecker synthesis with relatively high yields. However, in the presence of iron, the HCN was captured in the form of a ferrocyanide, partially inhibiting the formation of amino acids. We showed how HCN captured as Prussian Blue (or another complex compound) may, in turn, have served as the HCN source when exposed to UV radiation, allowing for

Having the nerve to home: trigeminal magnetoreceptor versus olfactory mediation of homing in pigeons.

The ability of pigeons to find their way home from unfamiliar sites located up to hundreds of kilometers away is well known, but the mechanisms underlying this ability remain controversial. One proposed mechanism is based on the suggestion that pigeons are equipped with magnetoreceptors that can enable the detection of either the earth's magnetic field and/or magnetic field anomalies in the local terrain over which the pigeons fly. Recent reports have suggested that these magnetoreceptors are located in the upper beak where they are innervated by the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve.

CH3NO as a potential intermediate for early atmospheric HCN: a quantum chemical insight.

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) has played a central role in the production of several biological molecules under prebiotic conditions on primitive Earth. Previously, K. J. Zahnle (J. Geophys. Res.: Atmos., 1986, 91, 2819) and Tian et al. (Earth Planet. Sci. Lett., 2011, 308, 417) emphasized that HCN production in the early Earth's CH4-rich atmosphere could have been possible through the reaction between active nitrogen atoms (N) and methane photolysis products. Here, we have proposed alternative pathways for the formation of early atmospheric HCN via the decomposition of CH3NO as an intermediate. In t

Human ecology: a bridge between medical ethics and the 2030 Agenda.

The United Nations (UN) 2030 agenda is a developing program that aligns all human activities with the goodness and fullness of our planet. Sustainable development goals are grouped into categories, including planet, people, and partnership. Whereas ecology refers to caring for all elements of creation, human ecology points out that man specifically is part of it. It is at this point that medical ethics intersects with ecology. The responsibility of humans for the environment, living beings (animals and plants), and other men is needed for driving all creation to flourishing. Disregarding any o

[Prebiotic phosphate: a problem insoluble in water ? ].

Salmonella typhimurium causes enteric and systemic disease by invading the intestinal epithelium of the distal ileum, a process requiring the invasion genes of Salmonella pathogenicity island 1 (SPI-1). BarA, a sensor kinase postulated to interact with the response regulator SirA, is required for the expression of SPI-1 invasion genes. We found, however, that a barA null mutation had little effect on virulence using the mouse model for septicaemia. This confounding result led us to seek environmental signals present in the distal ileum that might supplant the need for BarA. We found that aceta

Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST) Science: Planetary and Cometary Atmospheres.

The study of planets and small bodies within our Solar System is fundamental for understanding the formation and evolution of the Earth and other planets. Compositional and meteorological studies of the giant planets provide a foundation for understanding the nature of the most commonly observed exoplanets, while spectroscopic observations of the atmospheres of terrestrial planets, moons, and comets provide insights into the past and present-day habitability of planetary environments, and the availability of the chemical ingredients for life. While prior and existing (sub)millimeter observatio

Astroecology: Theory and Models of the Universal Structure and Distribution of Life.

Astroecology has been proposed as a scientific field to study the diversity, structure, and function of ecosystems on Earth and other worlds; it is increasingly important as new space-borne observatories expand the search for inhabited planets and moons. Recent work has highlighted the relevance of ecological concepts across hierarchical levels from organisms to biospheres. However, we still lack general predictions about how processes such as species interactions and tradeoffs scale to affect food-web structure, biodiversity patterns, and life-planet feedbacks. Ecological processes emerge fro

[Geognosy versus Geology: National Modes of Thought and Cultural Practices Concerning Space and Time in Competition].

Natural science investigators at the end of the eighteenth century made use of conflicting labels to position their respective preferred fields of activity in the Earth sciences. This mania for labelling marked their break with natural science and the umbrella term 'mineralogy'. In this conflict situation of specialist classifications and explanations, two terms in particular were established: geognosy and geology, which covered the very promising project of research in the areas of the 'origin of the Earth' and the 'formation of the Earth'. These and the associated research goals were subsequ

Cometary delivery of organic molecules to the early Earth.

It has long been speculated that Earth accreted prebiotic organic molecules important for the origins of life from impacts of carbonaceous asteroids and comets during the period of heavy bombardment 4.5 x 10(9) to 3.8 x 10(9) years ago. A comprehensive treatment of comet-asteroid interaction with the atmosphere, surface impact, and resulting organic pyrolysis demonstrates that organics will not survive impacts at velocities greater than about 10 kilometers per second and that even comets and asteroids as small as 100 meters in radius cannot be aerobraked to below this velocity in 1-bar atmosph

Investigations on the Role of Iron (III) and Silica-Iron (III) for DNA Protection Against Highly Intense UV Radiation: Tracking the Connection of Prebiotic Chemistry to Biology.

The mineral reaction pathways that yield organic compounds of increasing complexity would have required a means of protective screening against strong ultraviolet radiation for macromolecular assembly on early Earth. In this study, a bacterial chromosomal plasmid DNA was used as a model biomolecule that represents a complex polymeric nucleic acid containing genetic information. The plasmid DNA was exposed to UV radiation through a medium containing air, water, iron (Fe3+), or silica-iron rich aqueous solutions. Our results demonstrate that the plasmid DNA underwent covalent breakage in an aque
