We report the clinical and Doppler sonographic findings on the internal carotid artery in 230 patients with various purely ocular vascular symptoms. For evaluation, the patients were subdivided into four groups: group I (107): central retinal artery obstruction (CRAO) (13), branch retinal artery obstruction (BRAO) (31), amaurosis fugax (AF) (13), anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) (50); group II: retinal vein occlusion (25); group III: "low-tension glaucoma" (55); group IV: chronic open-angle glaucoma with a possible vascular co-factor (43). In group I with signs of arterial ocular mal-

Computer tomography of the head is now firmly established as an examination procedure in pediatric radiology. It is non-invasive, but on the other hand time-consuming and above all costly. Repeated follow-ups represent a level of radiation exposure which should not be underestimated. Two-dimensional sonography (B-scan) has extended the range of possibilities in intracranial diagnostics in neonates and infants, especially since the large fontanelle and the still-open cranial sutures were recognized as "acoustic windows". Five cases are presented, which show that the cranial cavity can be demons

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Many studies have explored the possibility of using cranial ultrasound for discerning intracranial pathologies like tumors, hemorrhagic stroke, or subdural hemorrhage in clinical scenarios where computer tomography may not be accessible or feasible. The visualization of intracranial anatomy on B-mode ultrasound is challenging due to the presence of the skull that limits insonation to a few segments on the temporal bone that are thin enough to allow transcranial transmission of sound. Several artifacts are produced by hyperechoic signals inherent in brain and skull anato

BACKGROUND: Intracranial hemorrhage is a severe cranial disease in the perinatal period. We aimed to explore the feasibility and accuracy of three-dimensional (3D) ultrasonography for the quantitative evaluation of neonatal intracranial hemorrhage.
METHODS: A total of 374 neonates with suspected intracranial hemorrhage from January 2017 to December 2019 were selected to be primarily screened by cranial ultrasonography and then diagnosed by cranial CT scan. The examination results were compared to analyze the feasibility and accuracy of 3D ultrasonography in quantifying blood loss.
RESULTS: C

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by conformational alteration of the ubiquitous prion protein. Sporadic CJD appears to progress faster if the basal ganglia are shown to be affected on magnetic resonance imaging. Transcranial B-mode sonography (TCS) enables visualization of differences in tissue echogenicity, which can be associated with changes in the cerebral metabolism of various metals. These metabolic changes are considered 1 of the potential mechanisms of the brain damage in CJD; TCS hyperechogenicity may reflect changes in metal homeostasis in C

OBJECTIVE: Our clinical observations noted an interhemispheric "cyst," a protrusion of the posterior superior third ventricle, in fetuses with myelomeningocele (MMC). The study analyzed the frequency of this observation and features that influence its visualization.
METHODS: We searched for cases of fetal MMC sonographically detected between 1999 and 2007. Intracranial findings were retrospectively reviewed with attention to the interhemispheric cistern. Additionally, we reviewed 25 fetuses without a central nervous system anomaly and 10 fetuses with ventriculomegaly but no MMC.
RESULTS: Amo

Asphyxia i a condition caused by lack of oxygen in tissues and organs. The basic pathogenic mechanisms of asphyxia are: 1)hypoxemia, 2) ischemia. The effects of perinatal asphyxia on the brain of a neonatal baby are critical in development of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. The diagnosis of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is based on clinical data including course of pregnancy and delivery (Apgar score) and especially on the neurological status of the newborn (consciousness, tonus, convulsions, reflexes, vegetative functions, etc.) and it can be confirmed by biochemical analysis and neurologi

Neuromaturation is the functional development of the central nervous system (CNS). It is by its very nature a dynamic process, a continuous interaction between the genome and first the intrauterine environment, then the extrauterine environment. Understanding neuromaturation and being able to measure it is fundamental to infant neurodevelopmental assessment. Fetal and preterm neuromaturation has become easier to observe with the advent of prenatal ultrasonography and neonatal intensive care units. A number of measures of degree of fetal maturation have been developed and used to estimate gesta

Intrauterine growth retardation and neonatal transient mucocutaneous lesions ("transient Behcet syndrome") have been reported in pregnancies complicated by Behcets disease (BD). Neonatal neurological manifestations have not been reported in such pregnancies. Vascular and neurological involvement is known to worsen the prognosis in adults with BD. The clinical course and outcome of a 34-weeks' gestation neonate born to a mother with BD is reported. Progressive recovery from minimal respiratory distress syndrome was followed by catastrophic presentation on 6th day of life with generalized seizur

AIM: In animal studies exencephaly is well described as a precursor of anencephaly. We have evidence that also in the human fetus the transition from exencephaly to anencephaly is possible.
METHOD: We diagnosed either exencephaly or anencephaly by high-frequency vaginal ultrasound in 14 human fetuses at gestational ages varying between 9 + 4 and 22 + 3 weeks.
RESULTS: In the first trimester exencephaly was the predominant finding, while in the second trimester the classic appearance of anencephaly was seen more often. In one fetus with exencephaly diagnosed at a gestational age of 12 + 2 wee

Twin pregnancies carry a greater mortality and morbidity rate than singleton pregnancies. In case of an intrauterine fetal death (IUFD), the risk of mortality and morbidity of the surviving twin is increased. The pathogenesis is usually due to twin to twin transfusion. The donor twin is hypovolemic, anemic and often shows a growth retardation or even severe enough to cause an IUFD. The recipient twin is hypervolemic, polycythemic and weighs more than its co-twin. In this paper we reported two cases of liveborn twin complicated by an IUFD of its co-twin. Both cases were monochorionic twins. The

In effort to eliminate morbidity and costs, associated with arteriographic investigation, we increasingly perform Duplex Scan of the extracranial carotid artery prior to endarterectomy. 451 carotid reconstructions between 1986 and April 1991 were evaluated retrospectively. The percentage of patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy without angiography has increased from 21.1% to 92.8%. Angiography was associated with a combined neurologic morbidity rate of 3.0%. Perioperative outcome of patients and stratification by indication did not show any significant differences for both groups undergoi

Congenital scalp masses pose a diagnostic and management challenge. In the past the relationship of the lesion to the skull and intracranial contents have been assessed by skull x-rays and computed cranial tomography. Waterpath sonography is a non-invasive technique that utilizes no ionizing radiation for evaluating and monitoring congenital scalp masses. In two illustrative cases this method of imaging assisted in assessing the size, contents, and relationship of the congenital scalp masses to the intracranial contents. It enabled the surgeon to anticipate the avascular cystic nature of the c

Although lenticulostriate vasculopathy (LSV) was recognized nearly 30 years ago, neonatologists and radiologists still question its clinical significance. The diagnosis of LSV may be highly subjective, resulting in many false negatives when the radiologist is not familiar with the lesion or false positive if over-read by those with special interest in this finding. There has been an increase in incidence of LSV since its recognition in 1985 which might reflect nothing more than a growing awareness of this finding on neonatal cranial ultrasound. On the other hand, improved ultrasound imaging te

Hydranencephaly is an encephaloclastic central nervous system disorder characterised by severe destruction of the cerebral hemispheres with preservation of posterior fossa structures. We present MRI and neurosonography features of a unique case of hydranencephaly involving cerebellum (in the form of complete liquefaction of cerebellar hemispheres) and cerebral hemispheres with associated bilateral microphthalmia and ocular colobomas. This is an exceptional case as to the best to our knowledge. In humans, such a severe involvement of cerebellum has not been reported in cases of hydranencephaly.

Pulse-inversion contrast harmonic imaging is a new ultrasonographic technique that can assess brain perfusion. In an adult with moyamoya disease and multiple recurrent strokes, this method detected subtle hemispheric differences in temporal-lobe perfusion, presumably due to neovascularisation, which were not shown by xenon-computed tomography or magnetic resonance perfusion imaging.
