Tax revenue in Mississippi communities following implementation of smoke-free ordinances: an examination of tourism and economic development tax revenues.

BACKGROUND: There is no safe level of exposure to tobacco smoke. More than 60 Mississippi communities have passed smoke-free ordinances in the past six years. Opponents claim that these ordinances harm local businesses. OBJECTIVE: Mississippi law allows municipalities to place a tourism and economic development (TED) tax on local restaurants and hotels/motels. The objective of this study is to examine the impact of these ordinances on TED tax revenues. METHODS: This study applies a pre/post quasi-experimental design to compare TED tax revenue before and after implementing ordinances. RESULT

Determinants of persistent underweight among children, aged 6-35 months, after huge economic development and improvements in health services in Oman.

Over the last decades, health indicators have witnessed major improvements in the Sultanate of Oman. This study was aimed at factors associated with underweight among children in four regions of Oman, as, in 1998, underweight was prevalent among 17.9% of children aged less than five years. A case-control study was conducted in 2002: 190 cases were 6-35-month old children with weight-for-age < -2 z-scores. Controls were individually matched by village of residence, sex, and age. The questionnaire included anthropometry of children, child-feeding practices, morbidity, anthropometry of mothers, p

Systematic review of economic evaluations in thalassaemia screening programmes globally: developing guidance for low- and middle-income (LMIC) settings.

OBJECTIVES: Thalassaemia, a genetic blood disorder, is a major public health burden. Most affected individuals reside in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs). Screening programmes can reduce incidence, but in resource-constrained settings cost-effectiveness is important. This work aimed to investigate how economic evaluations of thalassaemia screening programmes have been conducted globally, to identify best practices for future evaluation suited to a LMIC context. DESIGN: Systematic literature review. DATA SOURCES: The original review was undertaken between May and July 2023; an update w

Frailty: Pathophysiology, Theoretical and Operational Definition(s), Impact, Prevalence, Management and Prevention, in an Increasingly Economically Developed and Ageing World.

The world's population is ageing, and most older adults experience a later life burdened with disease and disability. Frailty is a multidimensional and dynamic condition characterized by declines in reserve and function across multiple physiological systems, such that the ability to cope with every day or acute stressors becomes compromised. It is projected to become one of the most serious public health challenges economically developed societies will face in the coming century. This review provides a comprehensive overview of frailty, exploring its pathophysiology, theoretical and operationa

Academic burnout under geopolitical and economic uncertainty: longitudinal associations with future development anxiety, employment competition pressure, and perceived structural university support.

INTRODUCTION: Students may interpret geopolitical and economic change as a threat to future development, but its cross-wave associations with academic burnout remain unclear. METHODS: This study analyzed a two-wave convenience sample from four universities in Zhengzhou, China. The baseline sample comprised 1,823 students, of whom 1,215 completed matched follow-up after approximately 5 months. Wave-specific factor analyses, covariance-based confirmatory factor analysis, partial least squares structural equation modeling, and covariance-based sensitivity models were used. RESULTS: After baseli

Structural gradients in excess mortality during and after the COVID-19 pandemic: economic development, preparedness, and cross-national differences, 2020-2024.

BACKGROUND: Excess mortality has emerged as a comprehensive indicator of overall mortality burden of the COVID-19 pandemic, reflecting both direct and indirect deaths beyond officially reported COVID-19 fatalities. However, the substantial cross-national variation in excess mortality remains incompletely explained, particularly in relation to structural heterogeneity across countries. This study examines whether pandemic mortality differs according to economic development and national preparedness. METHODS: We analysed 59 countries from 2020 to 2024. Excess mortality ratios were estimated bas

Developing a novel conceptual model of how food and drink tax policy impacts on consumption, health, environmental and economic outcomes.

BACKGROUND: While food taxes are proposed to promote healthier dietary choices and mitigate diet-related diseases, addressing rising UK obesity requires navigating a highly complex web of causal mechanisms. Economic evaluations of these interventions often lack a documented understanding of this systemic complexity. To bridge this gap, this study aims to comprehensively map the system by identifying the specific components affected, the causal pathways (mechanisms), and the individual and system-level factors (context) influencing the ultimate impact of food taxes. METHODS: A diagrammatic rep

Comparing the socio-economic and emotional implications of management of a hypoplastic cleft maxilla with distraction osteogenesis or orthognathic surgery in a developing country.

Management of a hypoplastic maxilla can be addressed through distraction osteogenesis (DO) or orthognathic surgery (OS), with DO being preferred for severe deformity due to the increased stability of its long-term outcomes. This study aims to compare the economic and emotional implications of DO versus OS at an Indian institute. A total of 20 patients who underwent maxillary DO were compared with 20 patients who underwent orthognathic Le Fort I osteotomy. Sourced from the GSR Institute of Craniofacial Surgery database, patients completed a telephone questionnaire, via a translator, which inves

Cost-effectiveness of a radio intervention to stimulate early childhood development: protocol for an economic evaluation of the SUNRISE trial in Burkina Faso.

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 250 million children under 5 years of age are at risk of poor development in low-income and middle-income countries. However, existing early childhood development (ECD) interventions can be expensive, labour intensive and challenging to deliver at scale. Mass media may offer an alternative approach to ECD intervention. This protocol describes the planned economic evaluation of a cluster-randomised controlled trial of a radio campaign promoting responsive caregiving and opportunities for early learning during the first 3 years of life in rural Burkina Faso (SUNRISE t

Development and Economic Evaluation of a Patient-Centered Care Model for Children With Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: Protocol for a Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare progressive muscular disease that primarily affects boys. A lack of comprehensive care for patients living with DMD is directly associated with a compromised quality of life (QoL) for those affected and their caregivers. This disease also has a huge economic impact on families as its treatment requires substantial direct, indirect, and informal care costs. OBJECTIVE: This study presents a protocol developed to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of a patient-centered care (PCC) model for children with DMD. The care model was designed w

The development, clinical signs and economic losses of gastrointestinal parasitism in feeder cattle on irrigated and non-irrigated dikeland and upland pastures.

Investigations were carried out over three grazing seasons with parasitized and treated (control) steers on irrigated and non-irrigated upland and dikeland pastures. The stocking rate in each paddock was adjusted by either adding or removing animals so as to maintain as uniform a sward and rate of grazing as possible. Animals were weighed on and off the pastures and fortnightly during the grazing seasons. During the first grazing season clinically normal steers shedding low numbers of gastrointestinal worm eggs contaminated the parasite-free pastures sufficiently to give rise to large residual

Calculating when elective abdominal aortic aneurysm repair improves survival for individual patients: development of the Aneurysm Repair Decision Aid and economic evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair aims to prevent premature death from AAA rupture. Elective repair is currently recommended when AAA diameter reaches 5.5 cm (men) and 5.0 cm (women). Applying population-based indications may not be appropriate for individual patient decisions, as the optimal indication is likely to differ between patients based on age and comorbidities. OBJECTIVE: To develop an Aneurysm Repair Decision Aid (ARDA) to indicate when elective AAA repair optimises survival for individual patients and to assess the cost-effectiveness and associated uncertainty of
